Glasgow Mods: Friday Street

  • April · 1 year ago
For anyone who thought Friday Street was all about Northern Soul. Lately they've been playing a better mix of music with some older stuff being played intermittently. It's nice for all us old revivalists, lol.
  • admin · 1 year ago
Thats great news that they are now diversifying, would be nice to have some feedback from them.
  • Wellayr · 1 year ago
Does anyone know if Friday Street has a last admission time? I'm working tomorrow but was hoping to look in for the last couple of hours if they were still letting people in at that time.
  • admin · 1 year ago
Just ask for charlie he will be there, You should eb good till 12:30 - 1ish.....
  • Frankie66modernist · 1 year ago

    Frankie
  • admin · 1 year ago
Frankie charlie will be down there, everyone meets at twisted wheel before Friday St at the top of the bar....
  • Frankie66modernist · 1 year ago
Im heading shortly if anybody wants to meet for a quiet beer followed by a noisy 6
  • Felonious · 1 year ago
Good to see Frankie at Twisted Wheel and everybody else that turned out. It's nothing to do with me I',m a punter like everybody else but I've always loved Friday Street. It's always had great music and a lively atmosphere. The lay out of the old Blackfriars basement meant you had to squeeze in beside people which really forced you to talk to your neighbour. The place has been opened out which means more room for dancing and a chance to wander about and chat. Guest DJ Scott played a blinding set just on midnight. That ticklish time when people are falling out of the Twisted wheel and heading down to Bell Street.

  • April · 1 year ago
Most of us just head straight to Blackfriars, don't be concerned about coming in yourself Frankie. If you do just ask for me or Charlie and you can hand out with us, we usually go in around 10.30 to be sure of getting a seat as we're all old, lmao. I don't know about door times but what I do know is that they vacate the pay in desk around the back of 12 or one. Remember it doesn't open till about 10ish. You will also find some of the folks upstairs in Blackfriars before we head downstairs. Please come along and introduce yourself, we aren't hard to spot, we're all the old mods who take up the tables on the dance floor, lol.
  • steveo1 · 1 year ago
anybody going to friday street this friday the 28th, both me and the missus are coming up to glasgow and where going to pop in and check it out, what's the tunes like?
  • Wellayr · 1 year ago
Anyone else going solo to Friday Street tonight fancy meeting up in the Twisted Wheel for a pint beforehand?? I've tried in vain all week to get a couple of mates from work to tag along but there's just no accounting for some folks' (lack of) taste! I'm heading straight from work, an office two mins away from the Wheel, and hope to get in there for about back of 9...counting down the minutes!! Cheers, Scott!
  • Felonious · 1 year ago
There's quite a few meeting up at the Twisted Wheel tonight. the Stereotype DJs will be playing sixties garage and ska amongst other things upstairs in teh bar.
  • admin · 1 year ago
It has been very disappointing to have not got any feedback from the Friday Street after some 12 weeks of promoting, We have tried hard to make contact on myspace, in person, via email and we have been completely ignored. Now from what I am gathering we have helped drive some people there way to help with their event. If we don't have any contact from them soon we will have to assume that they do not wish to be associated with what we are doing on this website. Hello anyone home.
  • steveo1 · 1 year ago
Can I just says thanks to the organisers for a great night at Friday Street on 28th March 2008. It was me and Lammy Chicks first time there since it was the 50's & 60's Bar in the 80's (I know it was upstairs). It was great to meet up with some friends from the past and Charlie you were a top host.

April I will be posting the photo's on Mods Reunited, as I don't how to do it on this forum yet. If anyone can give me any clues I will post them on here also, but think of it as a bit of advertising for Friday Street on another site in the meantime. Our buds from Burnley will be coming up for Defo this year, but are gutted to be missing the Glasgow Weekender, due to a wedding. However we will be attending this year.

Thank's to all the DJ's, the tunes were top and me and the missus ain't dance so much since IOW. Mikey Collins, top set again (recalling Leeds), the missus danced to all your tunes.

  • admin · 1 year ago

  • April · 1 year ago
I think, perhaps Mikey is busy at the moment running Friday Street and also admin on the Scottish Mod Scene Forum with Craig Wilson from the Melting Pot. The guys work really hard to promote and run events for the mods in Glasgow and I doubt that leaves them a lot of free time to pop into other forums. I doubt very much if they are ignoring anyone, maybe they just want to give you space to do your own thing, while they do theirs.
  • admin · 1 year ago
well after 3 months you have to wonder. BTW JFTR this GlasgowMods website is not a forum, craig runs the forum. Everyone has got back to us bar Friday Street.
  • Felonious · 1 year ago
I'll contact Jennie via the myspace but as she has just given birth to a baby boy I think she may have other things to do at the moment.

  • admin · 1 year ago
Pinky we sent the details to your email address. So who exactly are you then ? All comments are moderated on first post.
  • April · 1 year ago
Pinky, the mods reunited is The Scottish Mod Scene forum, like Jimmy said, the link is on the list on the right under the heading links
  • pinky · 1 year ago
Thanks April I got it !
  • admin · 1 year ago
also Pinky I have added a Mods Reunited forum which is run by Simpa, also in the links, that might be more fitting to you giving your geographic area of interest, from your teenage times.
  • pinky · 1 year ago
Again thanks, im not great on the comp, so i have been on the site but couldnt really figure out how to see pics etc
this ones a lot less complicated !!
  • admin · 1 year ago
Pinky, the forum sites which we openly encourage people to visit, requires you to understand how to navigate forum software, information can be buried very deep and hard to find, the forums are very good for topic interaction and discussions, thats not what we do here. What we do here is offer another choice and a simpler interface for people to find period information, we are more of a multimedia presentation of the genre, we felt there was enough already on boards and decided on a creative approach in providing a different offering, that is easy to navigate. We appreciate your feedback and take your compliment as a nice gesture that we do something right. Thank You
  • April · 1 year ago
OOps sorry about that pinky, I get the sites a little muddled sometimes as I've been a member for all of them for a while and all the site owners are linked.

Talk about muddled, on the front page of the site I noticed there was an appeal to sign a petition to get the faces onto the rock and roll hall of fame. I'm wondering if you mean The Small Faces, I signed the petition with everyone else a while back on myspace. The Faces was a group formed in 1969 and the front man was Rod Stewart, although ex band member Ronnie Lane was in the Faces.

Just thought I would tip you off so you could change it,just hope Steve Marriots daughters didn't see it yet, lol
  • April · 1 year ago
Oh dear, don't mean to flood but Pinky, if you go to mods reunited you see a list of posts, one of which is called Members Photo's, meant to add that. I think you will see them there, right on the first page if you use the link here.
  • admin · 1 year ago
The faces 1969 - 1975 nothing muddled at all, if you click the link and read it, it explains everything. Please post the link to the Myspace small faces petition for us all to sign. You forgot Ian McLagan and Kenney Jones along With Ronnie Lane as original members of the Small Faces.
  • April · 1 year ago
lol, yeah I know they were in the band too, it was Kenney Jones that brought Stewart onboard. I'll see if I can find the link again. Charlie must have been muddled when he told me you two were trying to help the Small Faces in their bid to get into the hall of fame.

Rod Stewart, on his own, was inducted in 1994. I'll try and find the link again on my bulletin board but it was a while ago and will take me some time to go through it. There was one for the Ronettes too. Problem is, these bands don't get a second look as there's the "it's not rock and roll mentality"

    I'll do what I can.
  • April · 1 year ago
lol, have to add a bit agin, sorry. The Dave Clark Five were inducted this year, which is brill for them, they deserved it, now they were a good mod band.
  • admin · 1 year ago
April, please if you can, try and post in the appropriate places for dave clark http://www.glasgowmods.co.uk/2008/02/29/mike-sm...
and any faces or small faces http://www.glasgowmods.co.uk/2008/03/20/the-fac... or http://www.glasgowmods.co.uk/2008/04/05/small-f...

helps to keep the website tidy and comments focussed on the article posted.

    Thank You

Rab thanks for reposting, helps a lot. Thank You
  • Charlie · 1 year ago
Well said Rab, being a Mod is like coffee, not everyones cup of tea!
Had an brilliant night at Zicos last night 6 stars all round, The Melting
Pot boys done us proud,Modus were on top form, The Underground Jam,
WOW! Look forward to hearing and seeing more of both groups,THATS
ENTERTAINMENT (LA,LA,LA,LA!) Here is an idea anyone, what about
a Style Council Tribute Band,eh? Now that would be different, or even a
Monkees Tribute Band, that would be something else, cheers!
  • admin · 1 year ago
charlie shouldn't that be posted under melting pot ?
  • April · 1 year ago
where did Rab repost, it seems to be nowhere to be found. A lot of posts are disappearing on here lately from all different people. Is there some sort of site glitch at play? Maybe admin could look into it.
  • Charlie · 1 year ago
Hi Jimmy sorry I posted The Melting Pot comment on The Friday Street page, I was stiill on cloud 9 when I was writing it, a big hi to Mikey and Paul of Friday Street, can't wait to the next Friday Street gig, it was a blast! Cheers!
  • admin · 1 year ago
April, rabs posts are per the links on page 6 of the comments, he was kind enough to repost. if you scroll down each page you will see that the comments are sorted into pages to keep it tidy, this happens once more than 5 comments are made and the latest is shown first. Nothing going missing just good housekeeping, with over 500 comments on the website it has to be organised.

A note to everyone:This website is moderated and there is a profanity filter installed to keep it family friendly, also any comments not on topic or deemed to be negative, hateful, inflammatory will be removed, we need to keep in mind that this board reflects glasgow and we want to have a positive image, there is a spam firewall and this has kept out a lot of unwelcomed sleazy posts from spam bots.

    Thank You
  • admin · 1 year ago
All comments can be found as explained, nothing goes missing, if it is deleted then it was moderated:

    Rab McTear: http://www.glasgowmods.co.uk/2008/03/15/mods-79... (comment 25)
    Rab McNamara: http://www.glasgowmods.co.uk/2008/03/26/david-g... and http://www.glasgowmods.co.uk/2008/02/10/phil-da...

use the contact form in future for any issues as comments like this will be deleted. the comments area is for the article posted. Tomorrow I will purge all comments that are not relevant to the article. If you want to have a discussion about your own topics then use the FORUM over in scottish mods forumthats what it is there for.
  • Mikey Collins · 1 year ago
First post on this forum, eventually got round to registering.

Jimmy, certainly not that we don't want anything to do with this site it's just that we've all been very busy at the moment, planning The Jamm and Who's Who gigs, weekender etc, etc it doesn't leave much time for anything else.
Hat's off to you for getting this site up and running and long may it continue in promoting all Mod related events.

Many thanks to everyone who attended the last Friday Street, another great turnout, and as always, good to see the dancefloor busy all night.
Cheers to Steve and Lammy Chick for making the journey and glad you enjoyed it (Charlie has always been a great host, doesn't buy you a pint though :)

If anyone wants to contact me regarding any Friday Street events my email address is mikey-collins@hotmail.co.uk

The Myspace site is run by Colin and Jennie Baillie who also design all our flyers for the club and band nights so it does take time for messages to filter through to me.

Anyway thanks to everyone for their continued support and hope to see some of you at Afterglow in the Twisted Wheel on Saturday.

    Cheers,
    Mikey
  • admin · 1 year ago
Hi Mikey, thanks for letting us know, I personally wanted to remove any assumptions that your brand was ok beoing associated with our diverse site.

Felonius had informed us that jennie had a new baby, having 2 of my own that explained the lack of response.

We just want to try and be helpful as much as possible and if we can be a good site for information about the setup then its all good, also we want to make sure that were all on the same page.

I noticed that there was a lot of youngsters looking for more info and this is apparent from the volume of traffic we are getting, so hopefully we have delivered something different and a new fresh approach to it all.

Thanks to you all for keeping it going for the last 9 years in glasgow which is a feat in itself.
  • Mikey Collins · 1 year ago
Cheers Jimmy, more like 20yrs keeping it going - I've got the grey hair and figure to show for it !!!!
  • admin · 1 year ago
Mikey, Me and Charlie have teamed up to raid our piggy banks and were going to buy you a pint, I thought I would give you advance warning so as too minimise the shock LOL. 20 years and your only grey and with figure .... damn am doing something wrong... See you soon...

  • Chris C · 1 year ago
It may well have been you both in a past life Stevie, if you believe in such things. At least the scooter is cool, even if it could do with a few accessories.

  • Scott · 1 year ago
Thanks very much Charlie. I know mate, just hope it's soon, i could do with a good night out.
  • stevie fae cranhill · 1 year ago
great night last night - best of all was meeting you all! Pity about the shortage of 'mod classics' (i was waiting all night to get on my Wooly Bully) but music was cool all the same.

    dodgy photos to come soon.....
  • Janny · 1 year ago
Would echo that Stevie, the music was better at the do in May at the Beat Club, Charlie, Casey, Rab and Emily take a bow - and about time for another - no pressure Mr M!
  • CharlieM · 1 year ago
Hi Stevie "Wooly Bully" fae Cranhill, it was fabtastic to meet you'se all last night, Mr & Mrs Janny included, great atmosphere, good to see everyone, mush to mush, agree about the lack of "Mod Classics" being played, overall it was a buzz, got some dodgy photos here too, well it was Halloween, and there was a some excellent distractions last night too take our minds off things, "Monkey" has certainly changed since "Quadrophenia" eh? Li, Li!! We all had a great time, long may that continue. We are THE Mods!!
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Really enjoyed last night, epecially meeting up with all those who I have been talking to through the site. So Stevie, Janny, Steveo1 and Lammy, it was brilliant to meet you all at last. It was also great to meet John and Claire from Burnley. Hopefully we will meet up again.

I was talking to Stevie FC about the music last night, and although it was really good, it could have been made better by the addition of a few Mod classics. But that is just one very small complaint on what was a really enjoyable first visit to Friday Street. When we first got in though, there was only about 20 people there, and we thought it was going to be a night of good music with only a few dozen people there to enjoy it.
  • stevie fae cranhill · 1 year ago
Chris C - you didn't tell me you work with David S - met up with him and his missus (who's an old friend of mine) today. They may come along next time.
  • ChrisC · 1 year ago
Yes indeed Stevie. I was talking to David last week and he was saying him and his wife knew you, and you were going to get together near the end of the year. I will certainly go along to the Friday street do again as I thought it was a good night. But as with everything else, the company always has a large part to play in that as well.
  • LC · 1 year ago
Great to meet you all the other night at Friday Street, I was knacked the next day, due to my excessive dancing. I really enjoyed the music and most of all the company. My only complaint is a lack of dress code, but I totally understand why they don't have one, as they have to pull the punters in to ensure that the venue costs are covered and that the Scene lives on, but it would be great if the Glasgow Mod Weekender venue had a smaller room inside, which was strictly dress code only, do you agree?
  • Davie Blair · 1 year ago
No - dress codes are what drove folks away in days gone by. What does it matter how folks dress. Snobbery if you ask me.
  • LC · 1 year ago
IMO, it was not a dress code that killed the scene, in my time it was the closure of the scene club that killed the scene. Sorry if i hit a nerve Davie, no intention. Never been called a snob before LiLi
  • Davie Blair · 1 year ago
You never hit a nerve and i'm sorry if i came across a bit hard lammychick - never meant to :p i just dont think dress codes have a place nowadays - to have a small room restricted to the way you dress smacks of "separatism" (in my book that means snobbery). Btw - the mod scene in glasgow carried on long after the scene club shut. A' ra' best, Davie.
  • TYB Civic mod · 1 year ago
sounds like a good night was had...how many were at the do?
  • Scott · 1 year ago
Sounds like everyone had a Soultastic night on friday. I was done in after my fun halloween night at the soft play area with about 30 screaming wee monsters. I've not been to Friday Street yet, but i can't see what good a dress code would do, each to their own as they say. what one person thinks looks great, someone else might think it looks terrible. I think it would only split the scene, with people gathering in different places.
  • ChrisC · 1 year ago
For what is worth (probably hee haw) my own ideal would always be for it to be 100% Mod. But that is probably inviable nowadays, hence the reason why there are no dress codes in place.

I also think for a lot of us the Mod scene did go after the Scene Club closed. The best band had disbanded , and the only real mod haunt in the city had closed. A lot of our peers just left the scene in total, and I suppose even for us who hung on it was not the same thing. I kept going to rallies for a while. But I had my own last hurrah with that scene when I was confronted by hundreds of scooter boys and scooter skins giving it the old zig heil at Morecambe in 1986.
  • LC · 1 year ago
I can see from this site that the scene did continue after the Scene Club closed, but it died for me when the The Scene Club closed. We (me and my friends) had nowhere to go and we were forced to retreat to our rooms with our record players LiLi. The Star Club was never my scene and, for me, that appeared to be the only thing on offer at that time before I left Glasgow all those years ago.
  • ChrisC · 1 year ago
I can totally identify with your view Lammy. But whilst I did go to the Star Club and enjoyed the odd night there, it was just not anywhere near the same. By the start of 84 everyone we knew from the Scene Club had packed it in, and there was nowhere to go apart from the odd scooter club night, and to be honest we were not that keen on them.
  • LC · 1 year ago
It was great club and I am just glad that it was part of my youth. The music has continued with me throughout my life and I have enjoyed many a Mod night out throughout the years with my friends, old and new.
  • ChrisC · 1 year ago
The music never dies Lammy, that is the beauty of it. I have not had the pleasure of going to as many Mod do's as you probably have. As I said I packed in even going to scooter do's around 86. I never stopped listening to the sounds though, and by the early 90s I was back dressing cool again. The first time I had been anywhere even close to as good as the Scene Club was my first time at the Glasgow Mod weekender do in 2007. The one in June was yet again fantastic, so after all those years of looking for somewhere good to go, it has come around. Long may it last.
  • LC · 1 year ago
Yeah it is thanks to the guys from Friday St who make the Glasgow Weekend possible.
  • ChrisC · 1 year ago
I wasn't really aware who was behind it Lammy. But its incredibly well organised, and the music is great and everyone going along looks the part. Its one that is always in my diary now and is a must for anyone who has an interest in the Mod scene. I was talking to John about it on Friday (well Saturday morning) and I was telling him that he and Claire ought to come up for the next one. They would love it.
  • LC · 1 year ago
I think John and Claire are popping it into their diary for next year.
  • ChrisC · 1 year ago
Good to hear that LC. It will be great to catch up with them again next year then. If you see them before that tell them I was asking after them.
  • stevie fae cranhill · 1 year ago
Having met Lammychick a couple of times i think she probably found it hilarious to be thought of as 'posh' - i would have gone for 'sophisticated' myself.

All the same, i'm with Davie on the dress code - maybe, within reason, but it's the more the merrier for me!

Also, like the great sage (Groucho Marks) said "I don't care to belong to a club that accepts people like me as members".
  • LC · 1 year ago
LiLi Stevie you hit it on the nail with your quote above LiLi. I'm from the South Side, that is posh is it not LiLi
  • ChrisC · 1 year ago
Were you not aware that Lammy originally came from the posh/snobby part of Milk le Castille Stevie. I am amazed you could not tell that from her accent. And I am in total agreement with you and Davie, everyone should be welcome, as long as they are a Mod Li Li ! That was one of Harpo Marx's quotes, in case you did not recognise it.
  • Janny · 1 year ago
Chateau Lait actually Chris! And for any of us to be classed as posh, well.......Remember we were wearing clothes that were "second hand" from such gloroius places as the Briggait, before the words "vintage" and "retro" had entered the common vocabulary!!!
  • ChrisC · 1 year ago
I stand corrected Janny. But I was sure it was the part where the Noveau Riche hung out, and it was known as the time of Le Belle Epoche in Milk Le Castille. Far too grand for a mere Sighthillian.

It was weird how we used to search for hours in the Briggait for these original 60s clothes, when only a while before it would have been a total brass neck to admit that you got your clothes from there. Imagine how bad it would have been at school if the other kids found out your gear came from the Briggait.
