Dunno if anyone remembers the xmas cards i made in 86 with a scoot and santa ?
dunno if anyone ever noticed the mouse with a condom on its head in the corner...
most of the 1 up got one then :-) but hey.....
ok need a bit of info... ill be up in glesga end of Jan and a few times in Feb so if there are any do's on..post a reply here or bebo me at scooterrab... ta fffolks n kkkeep da ffffaith !
i remember sleeping in a rather cold tent near the pencil in largs, but no toilets. however i imagine speno wouldn't see this as any deprivation at all - he'd be into the ladies like a ferret!
I can't even remember what he looked like as a mod - i can only ever recall seeing him with his blond flat-top and some kind of scooter gear on.
Is he in fact a DJ now? I do remember him Dj'ing in some clubs in Glasgow in the late 80's. I guess he was a bit aloof although, in his favour, i would add that he never pretended that he didn't know us on the occasions I did see him.
Keeping the faith
I remember it well, I also remember leading the charge when it looked like all the mods were going to do a bunk..... Was a fine day kicking a few fascists that day....
Welcome to the site..... :-)
the air,if you were skint, somebody would buy you a drink, and when you
got paid you would return the favour we all stood by one another, it was
like one big family. A lot of good bands played there, and I remember a
young guy playing "Thats Entertainment" on his Fender one Sunday morning.
He came from Uddingston, what a voice he had, a young Justin Currie from
Del Amitri The Loving Spoonful was his favourite bands I recall him telling me.
It wasn't all about fights, you could be you, the laughter never gets left behind,
or the characters we knew its tatooed on our hearts.
The fights came to us to my recollection, maybe something to do with all you twat guys wearing targets on yer backs, roflmao.
I don't remember any of us wearing targets on our backs. What I do remember is making sure all our friends were not bullied by fascists skins, Punks and bikers getting silly, I remember vividly the great times at the bandstand which was our main meeting place over the summers. The only time we entered into fight mode was on two occasions that our fellow Mods were set upon for no reason 1)The gathering of the clans all started due to punks battering a 14 year old boy senseless cause he wanted to buy some tickets for the jam at the same time the punk convention was on, WHAT A MAJOR BULLYING mistake that was. 2)The bikers again had set about some young mods and we decided to confront them at the suspension bridge, all the Mods walked with heads held high after those times, firmly putting bully's in there proper place, just as we did with the Bundy NEDS that pulled billy parker of his scooter at MaxWells. By and large as the post mentions we had more good times with our clothes, music, scooters and parties and I certainly don't remember any senseless violence just reasons for backing up our mates..... Saying all that, I do remember you APRIL chasing Jim Nairn (who wore targets)with a brick and a gang of girls down the lane of Sammy Dows on Mitchell Street, ohhhhh the memories and we were having a peaceful pint too.
Great times, great people. I remember the Skinheads coming from a pub, i think it was called Minstrels, and it was painted black and white, anyway they came to the bandstand looking for a fight and left wishing they hadn't.
What ever happened to Rab from Cardonald, Sharon, Louie, Jason, wee Arty , John Nally (the guy who looked like Keith Moon)? And Marcelo the Italian Mod? I remember Livy trying to talk Marcelo into getting involved in a battle outside of Listen, but he was having none of it.
I've never seen so many Bikers leave a venue as quick in my life, all the Mods went in the main door and the bikers left by the other exit, but there were more Mods outside. It seems that if all the mods were to reform now, there would be thousands of us. I could write all day about the good times in Glasgow.
It's great to see that the old saying is true, once a Mod always a Mod!
Great Site Jimmy.
for the good times they were,Sharon is happily married in
London with a 2 year old daughter called Emily, wee Rab
can found in Nice n Sleazy most Sunday's if you fancy
coming along Big Jason is in London still, Marcello is married

from you Danny and I hope life has treated you well since and after
Queenslie,awra best Charlie
wow mate, you fair know where everyone is, ha ha, good to hear from you mate, and good to see your doing well. I've moved doen to Ayr now, but i've been in touch with Mikey and hopefully be arranging to meet up soon.
Thanks Charlie for the invite, i'll take you up on that mate. Has Livi calmed down any, ha ha?
Do you remeber when we went to change to the Glasgow Civic Mods?? I'm surprised John Nally is still alive after eating a few cans of dogfood at one of your parties.
Good to hear from you mate, and hopfully see you soon. If you see Rab tell him i was asking for him, but i'll make a point of looking him up.
Cheers,
Danny.
I remember the mods would hang around the bandstand although I didn't my-self. I did go to the occasional party in Queenslie though and there was a guy who had an old NSU which would now be worth a fortune but we would all take turns riding it up and down the street , helmet free and pissed. Back on the scene again and have been going to Friday street and the Mod weekenders for the past few years, so might see you sometime and buy you a beer.
Cheers
Robert
Ah, the bandstand...
Remember when we used to all walk as a group from the bandstand up to the barras. Or up into town. F****n hundreds of us just crossing roads and walking around as if we owned the place (which we f****n did). Heh heh.
The years that we all spent hanging round the clyde side are still right up there for me as the best. And I'm still a very naughty boy indeed...
Paul
Wish I could remember the lasses name as I was mad about her at the time but was not old enough or good enough (sigh) hahaha...while on the memories ,,,whatever happened to big Shaun?
Memories of being questioned by some of the Glasgow skins about "who was scissors?" and just filling em with dread telling them he was the last person they ever wanted to meet and see em fill with worry. Marching through town to see "the ace face GS". Police circling the hundred odd strong mob trying to work out if we were on a war path but not being able to stem the flow. By the way, The Ace Face rode what turned out to be a heavily modified honda C90... Sting shouting out at the bloke in disbelief as the poor mug tried saying the C90, complete with backrest (paper cutting cellotaped on it saying ACE FACE) with a fibreglass lammy mudguard & bolted on PX panels was a GS hahaha....Summer nights in Cambuslang, hanging out with a lovely girlfriend and other Civics....The Clothes, the music, the scooters, the feeling of wearing new gear down the One Up cafe, the feeling of power in the city centre because you were one.... TyB haha...
Ran into Jason once in Glasgow in our twenties and he had a leather biker jacket on. I was so shocked. We went for a jar and done a bit of recapping the old days. Still remember Rab and Jason getting well upset with me when I bought my first vespa and went scooterboy. Real anger at me, which didn't last as I remember teaming up with Rab when he bought his first scoot which was a 50 special, but supposed to have been a primavera... the scoot was duly returned to chancer seller, with me riding wae him.
Rab had a massive pile of pictures, wonder if he kept them...am living in Wales now, Cardiff to be exact. Still riding vespas, haven't stopped since those formative years of my first legal scoot at 16...oh yeh...an my nickname at the time.... anyone remember? No big deal..TyB haha
I'm Isabell and I hung about with the Mods at the Barras - the Haiwian Grill and then the One Up Cafe. I went out with Rab McNamara from Cardonald and then Bridey.
Charlie are you the same Charlie who had all the great parties inclyding the one where the local guys burst in and caused mayhem - we all ended up giving statements to the police - Sharon took a flier off the balcony.........
I've actually net up with a few old faces over the years through the scootering scene which was very strange! :0)
what we are doing Wee Audrey is married to Davie"Banaman" Blair, remember his yellow hipsters from "The One Up" hence the name, hee, hee! They have been married for years now, have 2 kids I believe. Its such a buzz, hearing from you,if you have any photos, upload them to Jimmy at Admin,we'll do a slideshow for you similar to the ones on our website, you pick the music, there is nothing our website can not do to help keep the Mod spirit alive, past, present, and now,all the best Isabell,God bless.
Some other names that spring to mind, Geo Stevenson, Wullie Carter, Pauline Lamberton and her pal lynne, Alison Hamilton and Katie Boyle, Davie Martin, where are they now?
Last time I saw Gonzo wis at Parkheid aboot 20 years ago and he had a parka oan. Whyt ere happened tae Martin (ginger hair), goat the jail aifter we pit some shoap windae in frae Cambuslang alang wi Tam ?
Dae ye think ye kin compel a list wi 50 members frae the Glasgow Civics ?
talking to Jimmy about the S.W.A.N.K Muriel Gray, programme about The Glasgow Mods interview at The Barras!!! I can tell you they interviewed Bridey
and Wee Louie and Sharon Curran outside The One Up and The Hawaiian Grill,I am trying to locate for this website, that very programme,I have contacted Channel 4, I will do my best to find it,Indiana Jones,STYLE!!!so if any one has it taped on VHS, or BetaMax,you know where we are,Bridey was wearing my double breasted raincoat,I had sold him for a fiver, that very morning, you will
also see Sharon Curran eating a roll and pie, while Muriel Gray is interviewing
Wee Louie, amongst others outside The H.Grill,ITS PURE DEAD GLESGA,SO
IT IS BY THE WAY!!! Oh before I go! I had spoke to someone at Friday Street
not more than 3 weeks ago about this very programme,lo and behold! they called me a lying "BLANKETY,BLANK!" well ya 2 faced git, read it and weep!TOON YA BASS!Next time please say it to me, not when my back is turned, thank you NG for putting the record straight on S.W.A.N.K,
Martin left the whole scooter scene after getting lifted for the shop window thing... He and his family were getting some real bad hassle off local skin neds and i think it broke the man a bit. Jeez, what am i calling him a man for, we were still wee boys looking back... but then again, it didn't feel it at the time.
hahaha oor big Tam got lifted in Argyle Street when a gang of skins surrounded him and a few of the Cambuslang Civics...mad man pulled a blade and CID had him in no time though he did "negotiate" to get the team away from the gang as they were heavily ootnumbered...well...if thats what ye call swinging a blade in the face of the skins wae folk trying to do shopping and suddenly running away screaming hahaha, what we would do for each other eh? Truely thick as thieves looking back... Me & Tam had a few adventures in the years after Civic... to be told another time...TOP LAD...sadly I dont see these fine lads anymore now am livin dann saff
To anyone reading this who was not about, can I point out we are only highlighting the levels of violence we were forced into to defend ourselves, our Mod thing was a lot more than just that.
TYB :¬)
Ah the memories, heres wan tae run by ye, I end'd up takin' a beer glass in the face cause o you and a few aithers parkin' yir scooters ootsyde the butchers shoap next tae the One Up.
The butcher came oot, and telt yous tae move yir scooters, but yir pal, it wisnae Mitch fae Toonheid, wan o yous Moonlighters squared up tae him, the butcher pit his heid intae yir mate and split his heid open.
Needless tae say, he went doon tae the Sarry Heid goat his mates (all between 40-50 yrs of age) and the rest they say is history. Not the sort o thing ye furget.
Tam and Martin, guid lads, I remember haein a few ding-dongs wi the Halfway Skinheids up the toon.
Toon Ya Bass
Wonder what happened tae Mitch, he was a globey when I left Scotland... see Big Tam Reid is in the pic ootside Mickey Oates?

Whatever became of Debbie MacDonald and Carol Harkins !!! if it wisnae Harkins its something near by, they alsae hid a pal called Donna, I think she moved tae the Northampton area.
Life in the Civics wis ne'er dull, dinnae ken hoo meny pairs o dessies I went through !
The incident ootsyde the One Up I remember as clear as day.
I'm noo tryin' tae remember who else I kent fae Cambuslang
Debbie and Carol, what a pair haha, Donna was nice too. I haven't heard from them in ages either. last I knew Debs was working in a bank, her wee bro Don was a maod but just a bit too young for hanging out with oor lot...
The girls used tae have a saying "think positive, think vespa" as they always wanted to pull a mod wae his own scoot haha.... cheeky girls, Carol and Debbie had scooters but they were not always on the road. I bumped into them a few times in town when they were walking wae their helmets....scooters in bits but they reckoned it would pull the lads so they brought them in on the train wae them haha.... You got the names bang on as far as I rememeber pal, Donna was Donna McColl.

I've actually been to Friday Street and to the Mod Weekenders (only the Saturday afternoon mind) over the past few years - through Scootering rather than the Mod side of it though. I do still love the music and everything though and have been known to yearn for those heady days!!! ;0) I've been into the Scootering scene for many a year but have only been active again for the past 10 years - I recognised a fair few people from the Friday Street photos. I actually help organise the Scottish National Scooter Rally at Kelso!
Re S.W.A.N.K - I contacted Channel 4 last year about it and apparently they do not have any recordings of it in their archives and the company that filmed it went bust and they didn't have any other details about them - I couldn't find anything about them on the web and I seem to have lost the email from Channel 4 with the company name!!
Davie's yellow hipsters - I remember thinking they were amazing the first time I saw them.................... ah I was young!!
I will try to get to one of the Friday Street nights and if not we shoudl arrange to meet up at the Mod Weekender to laugh at how much we have all changed over the years - or not!! ;0)
Isabell x
They went tae visit Sharon Curran, alang wi Sharon Campbell oan their scooters and goat loast, instead o takin' the turnin' fur Lambhill they end'd up in the countrysyde, at least their hearts whaur in the richt place.
Last tyme I saw Big Jason wis in the early 9t's, I wis camin oot the tailors at St Enoch Square and he wis wi his dad (Sammy) wi a leather jaiket oan, I couldnae believe whyt he wis wearin' the conversation sterted aff "Jim, still a Mod, cool" no seen the big man since.
Still tryin' tae wurk oot a few mair faces fae Cambuslang.
Its oan a post somewhaur
Nae twang, jist two stroke and two star
Mick Herron was a Cambie mod but committed to the Civic thing also, then there was also an old pal Billy McCallum and of course...big Tam Reid. Oor Martin swore to me he never even put a hand on the window the day of the arrest, guilty of simply being there I think! They wanted us off the streets at that time, as we know.
answers oan a poastcaird address'd tae Rab MacNamara c/o Cairddonald heights
No, sorry, come to think of, i lost it.... Good to hear Rab that you've still got yours.
I'm having a bad day today, i parked my scooter at work (the Southern General Hospital) and some B*****d has reversed their car and knocked it over. My new crome bits ain't so new anymore!!!
doing well for yourself, I am sure we will all meet up before The Mod Weekender.
We all have a lot of catching up to do, I am looking forward to it,God bless.

`We are the Glasgow Mods`
The butcher was gettin annoyed wi the smoke fae the scoots.
He went down to the Sarry Heid and got all his mates - grown men!!
Somebody got battered - was that you NG??
Mitch I see now & again around Cardonald - he's not into scoots any more.
Had time for mitch - sound chap.
Any sign of colin wands or ross butler yet?
I remember deddie having a green vespa 100 sport (remember them wi indicators?).
Theres a pic of her at girvan on the scoot in mine & audreys photos - if you appear here debbie & see this, go have a look.
I remember the swank programme - i heard that snobby cow muriel gray saying how she couldnt imagine anyone buying from the barras - get off yer high horse ya stuck up bitch!!
Lenny henry was there with his missus dawn french but he was lurking around in the back of some stall to keep out the way when he was spotted by big ricky the globie - he went straight up to him & shook his hand - " awrite lenny my man, hows it gaun"!!
That was one of quite a few run ins with that certain individual.
Who is deddie ? I remember a Debbie fae Cambuslang with indicators haha as for M****l G**y, i haven't anytime for her, the look of discontent on her face when she interviewed Paul Weller for The Jams last ever appearance on The Tube in 1982, just said it all for me.
WE ARE THE MODS
Jim - right place - wrong time ; )
Always liked him though.
While im on remember Urgy, was fea the east end but wasnt into all their shite.
When did he die.
Mind and say hello tae Mick for me.
Jim Paton used to call Urgy 'Old Tam' because he was the oldest Mod that was around at that time. Him and a few of the East Enders cause absolute bedlam in 'Waves' disco at Scarborough in 82. You were lucky enough to have been on the way home by that point Andy. Me and big Chris McCrae were being stalked by about 200 Yorkshire Mods looking for any Mods from Glasgow.
Always Remember The Good Times.
I never went down to the Blackpool do's but I certainly know all the stories. One year (possibly Sept 80) there was a bit of a barny with a bunch of skins, and big Chaz threw one of them through a shop window, the perfect place for them as far as I am concerned. The Scarborough one was definitley quite scary. It all kicked off cause the Yorkshire lot did not like the way we looked, the way we danced etc. But although they outnumbered us by a large margin some of your boys had come well prepared, and there was a few battle scars before the sheer numbers told. Me and big Chris McCrae were trying to get back to our digs after it and had to dodge about 200 of them looking for revenge on any Glasgow Mods. You'll also remember it spilled over into the Balloch Rally in May 82 when it once again kicked off big time.
Great to see you are still in touch with some of the old crowd. Maybe you's could come along to one of the Friday Street nights. Sadly wee Colin is not on the decks, but they do play some good stuff.
Colin is still working in GM Radiators (man and boy) and I've been down London over 10 years now and still got the same P2 u remember Rab!!!
Popped up a couple of weeks ago with work and drove out to Airdrie to see the CVS - some of the old crew still there and a few original faces too
Davie - Jimmy Kyle and Rab Kelly are still in Clydebank scootering
Got ur number now swap - i'll gie ye a bell and we'll meet up.
local neds turned up wanting a fight and every window was smashed... then a pitched battle in the street, my lasting memory is colin wands running with a hoover trying to lamp one of the neds.
MET YOU AGAIN A FEW YEARS AGO, CANT REMEMBER WHEN, THINK IT WAS AROUND THE TIME ME N ALEX WERE DOING THE TOMMY HUNT N EDWIN STARR GIGS AT BARRAS, WHERE U LIVING NOW M8?
IM OCCASSIONALLY IN GLESGA AND WOULD LOVE TO GO 2 ONE OF THE DO'S
we were young free and most importaintly MODS... good times...

GLASGOW
Well, he was reasonably ok for a guy nicknamed 'cool'
Great comments Scooterrab - it was just like you say - if you were a Mod in Glasgow you were one of us whatever school you went to - and the bandstand was the starting off point for many an adventure...
The whole glasgow mod thing trancended the 'glasgow bigotry' tim or bear if you were a mod you were welcome....
You might only have known a fellow mod for a few hours, but if it kicked off you had his back,
a brotherhood of innocence in a time if youth... fek if i hadnt been a mod my life would have been empty.. the skin/punk scene was shit and around the corner were casuals..(well dressed neds!)...so mod it was, and at heart will always be...ktf... we arra... n gizza fag!
next morn we awoke to find a rugby match starting in field next to us....
also I remember 1 do we ran (we being roadrunners)(beep beep) in the gay pub on clyde st, some lass had grabbed my grolsh n ran into ladies with it..never being shy i pursued her in, anyway a few of the lasses were shouting at me to leave..so as i left i banged the tampon machine and it procceded to empty on floor..the girls were filling their bags and soon drunks were trying to light their fags with them and others were finding large swabs of tampon in their pints....
it was some time later that i found out the place (vintners) had a certain "reputation". probably they were the only place that would take us...i mean would you hire a pub to a bunch of strangely dressed 19-20 year olds wanting to drink, play records, dance and generally cavort around?
Tony H
