Glasgow Mods: Glasgow Mod Photos

  • bawheidsburd · 11 months ago
could wee eddie (Renfrew ) be Eddie Cowan ?
as his younger brother Andy was a mod and I just recently found him
We were friends from the Shuffles punk scene. I remember Giggles (Gorbals ) and Rab (Townhead ) from then too I also have a pic of a Mick (Shuffles punk/skinhead ) but not sure if it is the same one ,think he came from Springburn area
but my memory is really bad (due to thyroid problems....... not old age !)
I had a pic of Ronnie,Giggles and Terry (Gorbals Cumbie ) when they were skinheads but think it may be lost now. The punks/ skinheads all hung out together in Shuffles (only place to let us in )
Somehow we all ended gravitating to the Mars Bar , Rooster ,Tech ,Tiffanys ( only on the mod night though) and of course the Scene Club .
  • doyley · 10 months ago

I can see John McManus fae Blantyre in picture 11, with me looking over at him, then Nammy fae Cambusland beneath me looking the same way, then 4th scooter from the right is Grimbob fae Uddingston with Mitch fae Toonheed right behind him. We were all part of the Moonlighters Scooter Club at this time, just before the club became an East Kilbride scooter club that disappeared up its own **** after a year or so of infighting.
  • admin · 1 year ago
we havent tracked down jason yet but no doubt hes around somewhere....... As for east kilbride, I lived there but had no time for the place, Glasgow ya bams
  • April · 1 year ago
Who is the guy in pics 5, 6, 7, and 8. I think I know that face. I wish the pics were still instead of a slide show though as it's hard to see the faces in the mickey oates one before it tuns over to the next slide.

Are there any plans to have a basic gallery where we can see the pics better?

This gets better with every new area that I discover. I'm knocked out by it. Truly. The music is equally cool as the rest of the site. My hubby Mark was on here tonight whilst I was out at work and he sends his respect and regards. It was him that found all the photos for me to view...and he doesn't do computers..., so for him to spend time finding this site via my email inbox tells you how good he thinks it is. Hxx

been into the mod scene since 1976 and still completety hooked . have not had a scooter for afew years now but still attend scooter rallys when i can. but anyway i just wanted to say what a fantastic webb site. its people like that keep the mod scene alive keep up the great work. Dellboy from warwick.
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Good to hear from you Dellboy. Was there anything you could do club wise being a Mod in 1976 ? I was 12 then, and I must be absolutey honest and say that I would not have known what a Mod was then if I had been knocked down by a guy on a Lambretta wearing a U.S parka. I had hair down to my shoulders and like all my peers, wore dan dares...not particularly cool.

But the site is really good, and its thanks to Jimmy and guys like Stevie, Charlie, and NG who do all the spadework.
  • CharlieM · 1 year ago
Cheers for that Delboy, it's been a pleasure putting this website out for the whole world to see, it's not all about us, it's for everyone on the planet who love all things mod!! If you have any photos you would like to send, share any memories, your more than welcome, feel free, we are the Mods!!

Just found this site through Macky. FANTASTIC stuff .well done all involved setting this up. I will need to dig some of the old Pollok Mod Boys photos out to send in.
I work with Jim Mckenzie from pollok another old PMB.

    great days indeed!
  • James T · 11 months ago
Hi Matthew, thanks for the compliments makes all the hard work seem worth it, a lot of the old mods have created some good content and all is welcome.
  • Chris C · 11 months ago
Hi Matthew. Did you go about with Gerry Ross, Jamie Brahmmer, Gardo and the PMB guys from the early 80s ?
  • matthew drennam · 11 months ago
    Aye
with Shorty, John Stracken, Geo Campbell,Hairy dan, rennie, kenzo, ped Smith, etc
  • ChrisC · 11 months ago
I thought it was you big Matt.

I was with you on the Saturday at Scarborough in 1982. If you remember rightly we ditched Brammer because he was drunk and singing dodgy sectarian songs. I think we still owe the Woolworths in Scarborough for those Jam posters. Do you also remember jumping over the wall down at the bandstand to have a go at those Govan Team muppets who were outside of Maxwell Plums giving us all severe stick.

Good to hear you are alive and well mate.
  • Matthew Drennan · 11 months ago
    Hi Chris
I have some photos to up load from Scarbrough one with me and you on a scooter together posing! What a weekend that was! mad days grazy days indeed. Where you with us when Jamie Brammer kicked over the post card stand with 1,000s of post cards !
Or when some one set fire to the hill were we were drinking and the helicopter came out!!!
i have scanned the Photos I will get them sent in to the site

What are you up to these days mate?
  • Chris C · 11 months ago
Hi Matt. I was indeed with yous when Jamie kicked the postcard stand over. It was after that he started the dodgy songs and we left him to it and got a carry out and invaded the beach; as all good Mods must do.

That was definitely a mad weekend, from the beginning to the end. On the Friday night we camped out in some English guys' tent and then wee Shorty and your mob jumped on top of it. The Saturday we crashed in a caravan that we had broken into, and then on the Sunday there was an amazing barny in 'Waves' disco because the Yorkshire scooter brigade did not like how we looked or danced.

I am still staying in the north of the city and I still go to some of the Mod do's. The music never leaves you as far as I am concerned. The Friday Street do's are great, and the annual Mod weekender do's are the best thing since the Scene Club. I am really looking forward to seeing your snaps big man.
  • matt drennan · 11 months ago
I mind i tied in with these English Girls and got invited to a party in their Hotel room, There was about 5 of them and ME! Well i fecked off to find the other guys and get some beers for this great party only to find out i could not remember were the feck the hotel was on the way back with the guys!
  • Chris C · 11 months ago
Later on the Saturday we tied up with a lot of nice Mods from Coventry, who you can see in my photo's bit. Melvie fae Dumbarton kindly informed me once we were home that one of the Coventry Mod girls was after my body. You can imagine my reaction to his late release of such information. You can also see Pat Forbes fae Penilee in a couple of the caravan snaps.

Hi Chris , are you the guy that works at CP ?
  • Chris C · 11 months ago
Hi Celtchic67. I may or may not be the guy that works in CP. Such information is (a) top secret, and (b) potentially liable to a lot of people taking an instant dislike to me Li Li !
  • celtchic67 · 11 months ago
Hi Chris, just wondering as I may or may not have a photo of you & me taken last year ..LOL
  • ChrisC · 11 months ago
It could possibly be celtchic67, yet again it may not. I have to say that I don't particularly remember having my photo taken with a lovely looking girl with blonde hair wearing a blue skirt and blue scarf, driving a black scooter with balloons attached lately Li Li !

In reply to Matt's list that brings back a lot of memory's and names that I haf forgotten all about, here are a few others to give an idea of just how strong the Mod scene was in Glasgow in the early 80s: Stevie O'Neill, Big Doc, Johnny Wallace, Mick Prior, Johnny Walker, Bob Kelly, Frankie McPhee, Scott Morrison (Sighthill GB) The Patons, Wass, Mick, Jim, Shug, Eddie Cunningham, Rab Cunningham, Jim McInch, Mick Gallager, Eddie Donnelly, Belly, Dan, John McGowan, Alex Frackleton, Andy Wylie, Chaz, Cronie, Shieldsy, Melvo (NG Mods)

  • ChrisC · 11 months ago
Great list there Algie, and I knew quite a lot of them. You are also right about how easy it is to forget some names when commenting. There were just so many of us going around then that it would be tough to even recall the people we knew well.

In addition to the names I listed the other day there, here are a few Scene Club regulars from all over the city that I have since remembered: Eddie Curran, Big Chris, Mini, and Cod from the north of the city. Pricey, Flemmy, Vinny, Urgi, Mitch, Stu, and Dough from the east end. Melvie, Mincer, Nivey, Jason Sloss, Davie Spears, Dixie, and George from the Saltmarket, who I nearly bought a 200 rally from.
  • AlgieEEM78 · 11 months ago
I think the old dementia is setting in Chris ,i even forgot the likes of big Urgi and a few others ,but as you say there were just too many to mention everyone. When i first got into the Mod scene at the Mars Bar /Rooster there was a guy i knew from Townhead called Rab Aitchison who must have been one of the earliest Mods in the revival,i had only been into the scene for a few months and he was leaving it ,so he sold me some cracking Mod gear he had got in Carnaby st. It got me thinking about who actually started the Mod revival in Glasgow,Some of the earliest guys ican remember aswell as Rab were Tony Taylor &John Mcue from the Gorbals ,Wee Midge Pollok,Livvy,Big Franny fae Pollok .Ithink some of them must have been there at the very beginning.I reckon alot of the earliest Mods were people looking to leave the Punk /Skinhead scene for something new and started the Mod revival,im quite sure it has its roots can be traced back to the Mars Bar ,The Uni &the Rooster .Iwas only 16 in 1978 but was lucky enough to get in the Mars Bar because my mates big brother knew the bouncers it was a really mad place ,with a mix of Punks ,Skins ,Mods ,Hippies ,Bikers and the usual assorted nutters, but was big in the Glasgow music scene,in fact thats were im sure the Simple Minds were discovered .It was a pure Midden but alwys a great atmosphere. Algie
  • ChrisC · 11 months ago
It is definitely easy to forget names for a few moments Algie, most times it happens when posting a comment. I had meant to mention another two yesterday. You will remember John Balducci as he and his sister Amanda were regulars at the Scene and Lindella. I also remember a wee guy from Scotstoun called Dan McPhail. His hair went very early (probably 17 at the latest) and he then started going around with the Scotstoun skins, strange that eh.

I actually knew Rab Aitch very well. Not as a Mod, but later on. He had a copy of 'Tin Soldier' by the Small Faces in a picture sleeve, and I was always trying to get him to sell it to me, with no success.

I am not so sure when the earliest Mods actually came to be in Glasgow in decent numbers at the revival time. But I do know that Rab, Wass, and Mick were punks and then became Mods. Like myself, they all went to the same school, so they would have known each other for a while when the revival kicked off. I also later knew Giggles, the guy referred to by Modernworld. He also went around with Rab, Wass, and Mick Paton when the Mod revival was in its early days.
  • AlgieEEM78 · 11 months ago
I thought you might have known Rab ,i also forgot to mention Mick Riley aswell asiknew him from the Rooster. Its good to see since imentoned the Mars Bar that its stirred a bit of iterest in the origins of the Glasgow Mod scene ,Bawheids Burds & Modernworlds comments also reminded me of a few people from early on .Ive got a really early photo from the Rooster i think its from 1979 or possibly 1978 ,and most of the people in it also drank in the Mars Bar &went to the Uni ill try and get it on and see if anyone can help me remember some of the faces ,ican only remember a some of them[Dementia Again].ive been really busy this week and only been able to post now and then ,but im on a weeks holiday this week so hope to get a few good topics going on the site . Algie
  • ChrisC · 11 months ago
I will look forward to seeing your photo's from inside the Rooster Algie. To me the early period, from 79 to 1981 is the most interesting. I did not get into the whole thing until 1980, but I always think I was very lucky because by early 81 we had the Lindella and the Scene Club exclusively for our use. I did actually manage to get a drink in the Rooster once (aged 16) but even then my cousin went up to the bar. The first time when I tried to get served I was knocked back.

It must have been weird before there were no exclusive Mod clubs in the city. There was always a wee bit of trouble with the neds, as well as the skins and punks of the oi persuasion, and the teds and rockabillies as well. In fact I think there might have been a wee bit of trouble with everybody Li Li !

  • modernworld · 11 months ago
Hi all and thanks for the many comments and names mentioned, some i know, most i dont. I have posted on this site and the scottish mod forum on the origins of mod in 1979 to the best of my recollection.
My main claim to fame is that I was in that article in the evening times of the mods in Glasgow green, I was on the back of a lambretta not in the main photo and I was halfed in two in another, I was also pictured along with quite a few other mods in an early edition of the face magazine (i think it was 4 or 5) we were pictured at the loch lomond rock festival (i think it was the second).

For the record, there was various small pockets of mods starting in various areas but the main focus was glasgow city centre and in particular the mars bar (it later became the countdown). Probably because most of the mods were disallusioned punks (punk had become everything it set out not to be and the music had narrowed itself into OI) or solid Jam fans. For me and a couple of pals, the turning point was All Mod Cons, I worked beside a guy who with two pals covered jam songs way back then, in fact it was one of there older brothers (by about two years) who was contacted by the evening times to do the above piece mentioned. He was the first person I ever met who identified himself as a Mod, he was into the who, kinks, etc when all we were into was the jam and punk. All four were at that picture session on the green, only two made the photos, i was on the back of the lambretta not pictured.
The four guys came from Blairdardie - Davy McCormick, Ross ? (hes in the picture), Archie and his brother (also in picture)

Guys that i can remember who hung about mars bar-
Gorbals - John McHugh, Andy Burnett, Davy Corey, Tony taylor, Stewart wilson, Rocky, Giggles (John Rodgers)
    Pollock- Wee derek.
    Castlemilk- Brian, paul, Jason.
    Kings Park- jim Hutton.
Springburn- Mick reilly, Denise Corey and pal Liz.
Townhead - rab aitcheson, Donnie, halkie
easterhouse - george Clark & sister Bell, Chris
    Bellahouston - Donald, Brian
    Wee eddie (renfrew), John Allan,
There are loads of faces i remember but have no names, they will come flooding back no doubt once this has been posted.
Most of these guys and gals went to mars bar/rooster/glasgow tech/glasgow art school. But most (not all) finished with mod by 1980-81 for various reasons
  • AlgieEEM78 · 11 months ago
I think your spot on there mate i remember Scooters being parked outsdide the Mars Bar in 1978 and also remember quite afew of the names you mentioned and i reckon a few of them were the pioneers of the Mod revival in Glasgow ,or maybe even Scotland All The Best. Algie .
  • bawheidsburd · 10 months ago
found the pic of Ronnie ,Giggles and Davy but on the back it says Punk 1978 (their words ) they don't look very punky mind you.... so maybe they were in a transition stage LOL .
