Glasgow Mods: Glasgow Mods 79 - present

  • D-MALCOLM · 1 year ago
Hi was speaking to Charlie told me about the website - looks good! I was in the scooter scene 79 onwards in the Glasgow City Cruisers and used to drive a silver PX scoot with chrome panels (bit like Stings). Hung about the Barras, Bandstand and The Scene Club. Knew East End Mods, The Gold Hawks fae Pollok and other Mods who hung about the Barras. Still in the scene - buying, selling and painting scooters. In touch with some of the guys who were in the scene at this time like wee Renzo fae Pollok, Ronnie Mc Gregor and Robert Pollock fae Ruchazie, Robert McTear fae Cranhill, Prentie and Mitch fae Easterhouse.
Think the website could do with some photos of 79 onwards - i have some will email them to you.
All the best Div Malcolm (of Bridgeton now Tollcross)

    Div,
Looking for someone to do a write up ? if you know of anyone that can do a nice write up explaining and capturing the moment with some scooter club photos it would be welcomed. I am holding back on a few areas as I do not want to just have my style all over it. Thanks mate I remember the GCC well.

Will speak to the rest of the guys re: their stories and gather any photos of the time then i'll collate them and send it back to you.
    Cheers

    Hello
I'm an old mod from late 79. I came from Cranhil and had a PX 125 and later a 150 super. Like all mods of 79 hung around the Rooster bar in Classford St and as the scene grew went onto the Scene Club in Oswald street. Drifted out of things around 1983 but never stopped listening to the music and remembering the good old day's. Thanks to meeting with Dave and Linda Malcolm about 7 years ago those good old day's are back and now have a T5. The hair may be gone but the spirit of things live on and enjoying the Rallies and Scooter events as they come along. Roll on Summer 2008

I see you came from Cranhill. I lived in Barlanark at that time and hung around ith the skivingtons, Tony and Jed and wee Billy Cunningham. We would have parties in Cranhill, I remember a particular one at Billy Cunninghams. In the morning we all went out and stole rolls and milk from people's doors and (I hate to say this) we knocked the milk money from the doors that hadn't been delivered to yet.

Jeese I was 19 and we were up to everything in those days. Wouldn't steal a sweetie in woolworths pick and mix now.

I went around with a girl called Jackie, she was a cracker, lol. Let me know if you remember us or any of the guys.

    Hello April

I grew up with Billy, Wee Doby, John Mann, Nabby, Jamie Hay, Tony and Ged Skivington. We all got into the Mod scene at the same time and had some cracking parties in Cranhill. I was at the milk stealing party or may'be that was always something we did the morning after. Brilliant times though and met up with good people like Davie Malcolm, Bobo from Gathamlock, Stevie Phillips and Wee Mackie from Carntyne, Mackie from Milton, Big Tank from Easterhouse, Wee Bernie from Barrowfield, Wee Rod the Mod from Shettleson, Welchy from Springburn loads of others from Dennistoun, Sighthill and Barrowfield. I remember your name because I have a friend now called April, but remember a girl who went around with us all back then with the same name. Enjoying being back on the scene again although it's a lot different from then. Met up with Davie Malcolm as I said on last note and bump into my old mate Jamie Tracy at Friday street now and again. Have got back in touch again with Doc from Cranhill and Gordon Prentice(Prenty) and they both are back on Scooters doing the Rallies and all that stuff. Cranhill is a lot diifferent now and unfortunatly Tony Skivington was a victim of the drug scene there and died a few years ago. Don't know what has become of the rest but I bet they still talk about the Mods and good times of the early 80's.

Robert, it was great to see you again on Friday, sorry I didn't get a lot of chance to catch up with you. First time I haven't been the taxi for a while and I had a bit much to drink, lol.I remember a lot of people you've mentioned and those were great times.

The only reasin it isn't the same just now is because we aren't all around, get all the gang down there and it'll be just like old times.

Hopefully see you again soon, oh and you're looking well.

    Hello April
It was good to meet you again and enjoyed the time while I was there. Unfortunatly I was doing my Taxi Driver and couldn't have a drink.
I'm sure with all the work Jimmy and Charlie are doing on this site we'll hopefully get a few more of the old familiar faces coming back.
I don't think I'll make the melting pot this Saturday but I will be looking forward to the next Friday Street and will keep in touch.
It was good to meet you to Charlie and bringing back those Brookes Bar/Scene Club memories. Look forward to viewing the photographs especially the Blonde with her Sugar Daddy.
    Cheers folks

  • Charlie · 1 year ago
Like I said Jimmy, "Quadrophenia" was based on the 4 personalities of the band
Roger Daltrey the "Helpess Dancer" John Entwhistle the "Hopeless Romantic"
Don't need to say much about Keith Moons part,eh? Pete Townsend was "THe Spiritual seeker" Jimmy The Mod was The Who, hence Quadrophonic, falls
into place now. Very creative thinking from Mr Townsend. Genius!!!
  • TYB Civic mod · 1 year ago
I was a member of the CVS in the early 90's...do they still meet Monday nights up there in the main street? Can't rememeber the boozers name sadly
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
I don't know the name of the place that the Clyde Valley Stompers had their meetings in TYB. But they did have their do's in a pub called the 'Barrel Vaults.' The nights always seemed to result in a fight between a section of the CVS and the Glasgow Mods. Must have been all that Buckie that they consume out there.
  • Charlie · 1 year ago
Are you coming to Friday Street tonight Ted? Hope you can make it, be nice to catch up on some things, we are the Mods!!!

  • TYB Civic mod · 1 year ago
haha thaats the place...the barrel vaults....I remember it now....and Gav Lennox.... hahaha, we used to meet Monday nights there and all teh scoots would be lined up outside the pub...with regular ability Gavin would sneak out when nobody was watching him and switch everybody petrol off.... ye think we would learn!!! We would all get to the same roundabout and all the scoots would start dying out hahaha, think we would learn!!!
  • ChrisC · 1 year ago
I was never in the Barrel Vaults myself, but a few of my mates used to go through now and then. We always knew they would come back with a tale of a barney with the CVS, and they always did. I think it was a particular mob that used to cause all the hassle, and they may have been called Section 5 or something like that. I suppose if I am being honest though, the Scene Club boys were not exactly backwards at coming forwards when it came to staring a fracas.
  • ChrisC · 1 year ago
Oh dear, typo shock horrror. I obviously meant to say 'Starting a Fracas' and not 'Staring a Fracas,' which would have been particularly weird.

just read your article on glasgow mods 79- present .i got into the mod scene at 15 in 1976 and i thouht i was the only mod in the country simply because i did not see or hear of any other mods or scooter boys at that time . In my home town of warwick it was full of bikers . can you imagine by 1977 theres this one small tiny vespa fully covered in lights and mirrors . Now i dont why but for some unknown reason they took an instant dislike to me ha ha . Steadily more people started to get into the mod scene and by 1979 warwick had quite alarge amount of scooters . We soon all got together and started going on scooter rallys as some of us still do today and enjoying every minute of it . keep the faith DELLBOY
  • stevie fae cranhill · 1 year ago
We really are delighted to have you here DellBoy - and loving your insight into the Mod scene 'between the wars' - i imagine how cool it must have been to step out as a sharp dressed Mod in the years that style forgot (the 70's).

if you have any particular stories or photos you would like to have on the site we'd be glad to have them.

    Cheers

Cool picture 10/90 of the lads outside mickey oates, any idea were i can get a copy.
My memories are that I did a lot of running from skinheads bikers and anybody else who hated mod. But hanging around the barra`s and virgin on saturday`s will stay with me forever
  • CharlieM · 1 year ago
Hi Will get in contact with The Evening Times, there are 2 pictures of The Glasgow City Cruisers outside of Mickey Oates, believe they are £5 each, as the photos appeared in "Times Past" in The Evening Times. a great momento for any Mods or Scooter Boys who love all things cool!!! We arra Mods!
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
The pictures are £10 each Charlie, and if you want larger versions you can do that for an extra £4. Although there are a few guys from the Cruisers in the photo I wold say that it was very mixed. There are also three Glory Boys from Sighthill there, a couple of NG Mods, Big Frank fae the Gorbals, and Bobby Black from the south side as well.
