    • The film did indeed change a lot of lives then and even now, still a classic. I live in London now, was a Govan Mod from 81 and hung about the Scene and Lindella. I've got to know an old mod...

  • Brilliant photo's,brings back personal memories. Glad life has treated you well, wee Lainey,Fudgie and Michelle, Camey,Big Ewan, where is he now? Very special times indeed, thanks for sharing them with us all, take care.
  • Brilliant photos seems like yesterday.... thanks stevie for sharing the yesteryear.... We Are The Mods
  • thanks for putting photos up - and for creating your brilliant site!

Camey may remember we went off to Dunbar with no tent, no sleeping bags and (probably) no money! A few of us found a Caravan on the golf course and made ourselves at home, via an open window. In the morning some golfers turned up and we all clambered out the windows, while the golfers waived their sticks.

I remember we stooped to talk to some crazy Geordie scooter boys during the night. I had never met Geordies before...at one point one of them was having an arguement with his bird and started chasing her across the beach with a knife...they had a massive fire going and I thought 'this lot are going to turn round and eat us next!'
  • Stevie, there is a photo in the davy blair collection of that exact caravan.

  • Great pictures Stevie, number 40 thats Gary fae Royston beside you
  • Thanks - i couldn't remember his name - we went through to Edinburgh that day to check out the mods.

It's amazing, we could just go anywhere those days - i remember going to down to Ayr on my own and meeting some Mods there - we went to some pub by the docks - and stayed the night in a tents.

ps...on the way back i got jumped at Wishaw train station by local neds. The next time i was up the toon (with my shinner) Livy wanted to say it was baldies who had got me so we had an excuse to start a fight...
  • More names picture 14 and 33 with the girls No red jacket, Thresea blue jacket fae Govanhill,l Liz red hat who was Cathys sister, that should help a few memories.
Stevie I remember having a bevy session down in Largs, it was only you, me, and John fae Cathcart, and you being the oldest had to get the carry out. The train ticket is still kicking around somewhere, if my memory serves me right, a couple of local Mod girls joined us !
  • wow - you've triggered more momories there!

i do remember that time in Largs - i think i was trying to show those girls my 'cool' dancing in the street...

god know how you remember all these names though!
  • Just had a flashback, I'm sure one of those girls was called Paula, they got off the train a few stops before Johnstone, don't ask me how a remember that, but something tells me you tried singing that song "Hey Paula" one of those things you just dont forget, oh they were wel impressed ! The rest of the day, getting bevied in a pavillion on Largs seafront in the rain......
  • And dying in our beds many years from now, would you be willin' to trade all the days from this day to that for one chance. Just one more chance, to come back, to stand on the bandstand, to stand side by side with all your old mates, and shout...WE ARE THE MODS!
  • You'll need to be quick, that area is earmarked for redevelopement, the chessboard has already gone as that area is being redeveloped just now. I feel the urge for a big of tagging, much is a can of spray paint these days ? Do you think if we all met up down the bandstand, we would look like the auld jaikeys who used too hang out there also haha
  • LMAO NG, zimmers at dawn!
  • You might be right there Janny, but I was saying too Charlie the other day, how long will it be before we're parking up our mobility scooters haha
  • Reclaim the Toon that's what I say, mobility scooter an all!
  • When do plan this reclaiming ? just need to make sure that I have the scooter charged up overnite ! It is after all a bank holiday weekend
  • Great photo's Stevie mate, i'd forgotten about the caravan til you brought it alllllll flooding back. I remember sitting at the bandstand with Livi who had just been released from longrigend and he was keen to tackle the rumour that the combats said they were going to hang him and then you showed up with your dillion of a black eye from those wishy pishy boys who attacked you at the station. thats when Livi frogmarched the both of us off to do battle with the combats. wasnt it Spiersy and Costy we bumped into at the phone boxes at the clydeside when Livi started accusing them of attacking you lol, and when they retorted that they were innocent Livi changed tactics and said "whats this about the combats wanting to hang me" and the colour drained right out of their faces. Livi was always a great guy and a true charachter and gentleman. And yes Stevie,, i'd rather go back from this day to that day my friend. and why were you at Ayr without the troops anyway? those wishaw lads sounded like right two faced posery sods from what i remember of our conversations about the incident at the time. I wonder how big doo-wap Gus is these days.
Hows your lil sister these days? did she end up with Casey? Remember we were all getting set to go to the scooter rally at Great Yarmouth but ended up camping in Whemmys bay instead? NG. Mods mate, i knew Gavin, wasnt his scooter non restricted or it had a 90 engine or something. i remember his non mod mate Butch too and his little posse, great guys one and all. wee theresa was my ex and lived in the gorbals tho, Stevie, it was Mandy that was peter mc'nallys bird at milllport. sorry for the sporadic nature of this message but im on my mates pc again to view your pics and what darn fine pics they are too, especially the ones of modest lil me:). Charlie its a frightening thought that thousands of browsers can view us but then again we were THE mods after all. In my humble opinion the Glasgow mods were truely the finest mods in the UK. c''yall soon
  • Camey, I'll answer my part of your post here, your right about Gavins scooter being unrestricted, I can still see him buzzing along my street, haven't seen him in about 12 years, I ended buying all his Mod gear at the time including his parka that you had a liking for. Butch, hadn't seen the guy in 20 years, then I was in this pub in Maryhill last year were this guy came up to me and said he remembered me from years gone by and that he was Butch, haven't seen or heard from him since.
Have you seen or heard fae Stu fae Partick ? I still remember the time he took me up to your house in the Maryhill High Flats, Stu thought we were gonnae get attacked at the canal !!!
Angus the teddy boy, great lad, haven't seen him in about 10 years and he still hadn't had a job since he left school haha, we signed on at the same place, he was still up in Barmulloch last time I spoke too him.
Theresa fae Gorbals, I wasn't that far out, she worked on a ice-cream van, maybe the round was Govanhill !
My friend Gerry ended up buying Stevies old scooter off Gibby, it was being kept in the yard at The White House Pub. How the years have flown by. Mod for Life
  • Aye I can see you'se all going past The Band Stand on your mobility Scooters, fox tail ariels, like "The Banana Splits" on prozac! ONCE WERE WORRIERS! ha,ha!
  • I'll need too meet up beforehand somewhere, cause I dont think I'd would be able to find my way to The Bandstand. Now that we live in a world of so called equal rights, I think it's only right that Janny leads us off ! Charlie do you want to be a steward for this event ?
  • What an honour N.G.!!! The image of Delacroix's "Liberty Leading the People" springs to mind ( but with added zimmers and union jacks in place of the French flags!)!
  • Janny I hope the people with zimmers aren't carrying the flags or the social will be having a field day, its the only thing in Glasgow that puts the fear in people !!! I actually fancy one of those zimmers that has wheels on the front, maybe I can attach an ariel with a flag on the end !
  • Less of the zimmer talk please! I dont feel much different now to what i did in '84 - Maybe the old adrenaline goes into time spent with my boys nowadays, but i feel the same excitement listening to a great record, finding a cool pair of shoes, or seeing a beautiful girl - not much has changed really!

As Pete Townsend said: 'Hope i die before i get old!' - and he meant: i hope i'm dead when i start to feel old!

    I dont feel old yet!
  • HI you lot i missed the dunbar run in july 83 ended up in the rah in paisley came off my vespa and ran into a wall lol shitty thing was when i was going from bridge of weir to paisley in the ambulance i pased all my mates on there scooters big john lavelle welshy andy tennant wee tam hogg and cannon ect ect. AT least the lads brought me back a stick of rock hope to see you all soon frank from bow
  • Hi Frankie, were all meeting at the bandstand at 9pm on The Saturday before the do. Look forward to seeing you after all these years.....
  • wow, there is a picture of me on my first brand new vespa, under the title barras scoot...I am with Hutton, and Martin from Cambuslang in the background....haha amazing...that wee scoot tried to kill me!!! I fractured my spine when the brakes went on it and I hit a car!!! C910 KGG was the plate...lil bastard!!!
  • Hi Camey, my sister is living in glasgow and has 2 little boys - but her partner is definately not Casey! Looking at the Mod night pics you seem to have grown a few inches!

Wow, NG Mod, you still see big Angus (call me Gus)! I still have a tape he made up for me of all his Doo Wop stuff. Dont know why he chose to hang out with mods but he was/is a cool guy though

And yes, Livi was (is) indeed a great guy also. Always had time to talk to little mods like ourselves back then.

ps my sister said she occasionally sees quite Jim still shuffling around the toon.
  • Yeah, the vodka made me look taller in the pics, you missed a good night and me being ill lol, wow quiet Jim (Arthur) wasnt it? How on earth did she remember the denniston drummer, i'd forgot all about him til just now. big Gus was great with his doo wop doo wop mantra. Oh, cheers to whoever posted that bewildered lookin pic of me slumped in the chair on satrday night! shame on you whoever took it, lol.
  • yeah, quiet (arthur) Jim! she said she sees him stoating about with his head down as always - probably in the same combat jacket!

i really hope i'll make up it to the next one. And, quess what, i found Michelle on friends reunited - she says she couldn't get to the reunion do - but maybe she'll make the next one.
  • I've been in touch myself with Michelle also through the friends reunited site, got her too come over to here so she could see herself. Also saw Quiet Jim (Arthur) a few times in the toon, just walking by looking at the pavement. Last time I saw Angus, he had put the weight on a bit, like the rest of us now, but he was still into his Rock and Roll.
  • PILLS, THRILLS & BELLYACHES (perhaps this should be a new post somewhere.

I was just thinking how, way back in the sixties, they had their bombers, their dexies, their purple hearts. Nowadays there's ecstacy, acid, crack...

Well, back in Glasgow, in the early 80's, we had...'Do-Do' pills...

As young mods we kept hearing these were the things to have and you just needed to pretend you had a sore back at the chemists. So we would hobble in there, groaning, and of course exit empty handed everytime.

I dont remember ever getting my hands on those 'Do-Do's' so I dont know what they actually did. I was given some kind of pills one time at the barras - and shortly after downing them found I couldn't move! When I did eventually get up I thought I had become disabled, my legs were all over the place.

I think we sunk the depths of depravity one night at a party (i think it was at Jon Nally's...) where we found ourselves without any drink. There was a few of us who got into a store cupboard and found some meth's. Somebody said it would be ok to drink if we had some milk first...So, after raiding the fridge, there we were, standing in a cupboard, sipping milk and meths...mmm!
  • I remember Do-Do 's never tried them myself, other pills oh yes, even tried that Ecstacy injected in a Dentist Hypo at a Rave in Barnsley it was called "E' By Gum!" hee, hee! Only joking there, I always laugh at the time Billy Liar was doing a "A Ferdy" with the bag of pills under the pork pie hat routine( It was actually his Da's Trilby!) he gave a handfull of them to wee Rab outside The One Up, wee Rab swallowed them before I got the chance to tell him they were Billy's Ma's Period pills!!! Wee Rab chased him up and down The Barras! Mind you in all honesty, wee Rab never had a nose bleed for a whole month, period!
  • I do remember these pills. But did it not sound more like Doh doh than do do. I think the latter was probably a police song. I think everyone tried all sorts of garbage hoping it would be an upper rather than a downer, but sometimes only succeeded in knocking ourselves out.

Meths and milk, and Bel air hair lacquer and milk was a drink of choice for the jakeys when I used to work in the Parks department down at the Forth and Clyde canal. I'm sure they used to pay a wee bit more for a vintage bottle of Bel Air.

We used to buy a gallon of Shammy from the Sarry Heid and mix it with a bottle of Old English wine. (between 3) One night we met a few of the girls down at the chess board and they also gave us three cans of Carlsberg. It was the most drunk I ever was going up to the Scene club. I always remember lying crashed out on the bench next to the girls toilets and the whole place was spinning like being on the waltzers. One of my other mates was so pissed that he didn't make it up at all.
  • Yes, in the vernacular it was 'doh- doh' as in dead as a dodo.

Ah, the Sarie Heid - glasgow's finest winery. i remember the famous 'shammy' which i think was a fine cocktail of cider slops, then there was 'white tornado' - again, more slops.
  • Ah the famous "Sarry Heid Shammy" bought by the gallon, should be a famous land mark, the Jakeys "Bollinger!" I vaguely recall sharing 2 gallons of it along with Sheeny, Big Jason and a host of blurs, to "wet the babies heid!" when my son Douglas came home from Hospital, I was in Queenslie, woke up snoozing in The Band Stand, face down in a kebab and a slice of cheese and tomato pizza with Branston Pickle, in my Parka pocket! The thing that amazed me, my wages were still in my pockets!! Honest Jakeys then, and that is Gospel, no ponces or Fagin's I see around there now, "the times they are a changin'!" as Mr D. sang!
  • I think just about everything that came out of the Sarry Heid in those days was slops Stevie. But despite that it was a great laugh going in, with all the wino's fighting with each other.

We used to go in there all the time before going to a gig in the Barrowlands and it was always great crack. All the wino's were ex-boxers according to themselves.
  • i added a few more photos here - something to look at while we wait for NG Mod to finally post those 90's mod photos...
  • Stevie I'm having a few internet problems but I should have a few posted shortly, the problem is, I keep remembering things and have to write them down to add them too the story.

I'm so lucky that I never had one of those flat tops, at least I know I won't cringe at the prospect of one turning up !!! Even saw another photo of Jimmy as a Mod, I think that takes it up to TWO

Best things come to those who wait.
  • NG Mod, you could let everybody have a look at your 70's school photo - disco Jim.
  • Like the new photos Stevie, going to send you some "new" photos, check out "The Man In The Corner Shop", love the Brighton photos, we are the Mods!! Whatever happened to Gary from Royston? Now there's a blast from the past!!!
  • i'm sure you must also know Gordon 'Waggy' Wagstaff from Craigend, Charlie - last time i heard from him he was running a retro clothes shop in Glasgow - but that was probably 20 years ago - time sure flies!.
  • Brilliant photo's Stevie, really takes you back to more care free times.
I remember a crowd of Renfrew mods heading to a Dunbar Rally, i'm sure it was before '84, i was only about 14. The Rally was a disaster, mods fighting with each other and loads of stealing from each others scooters and i'm sure it poured all day. Then we got chased all the way over the Erskine bridge and into Erskine by some gang, not a good day.
  • Of course I remember Gordon, Foxy and Bridey, good guys, ahhhhh, good memories what a trip, no drugs as well, changed days indeed!! Cheers Stevie!!
  • Cracking photos Stevie!!!
  • Hib Stevie, just noticed Santa got you a Scooter for Xmas, brilliant!!! Well done, and a pillion passenger too, ha ha!!

I will be working on my Jimmy Hendrix Project for the next few days, it will be in 3 parts, its engrossed me,from his family History 1783- till his birth January13 1948, got a picture of his paternal grandmother Nora Hendrix, on her 100th Birthday!!! What a woman!!!
  • you are really doing a keen job on the research Charlie. hey check out the Beto-Man's segment on the East LA Revue. It's Elvis Birthday January 8 and Beto-Man is doing a special tribute show. It's pretty good. Beto-Man is one of our Blind DJs and he loves Elvis. I went record hunting and found two by the Stones in mint condition $12 (US) for the both. 12 x 5 and Decembers Children albums. talk soon Charlie. Mods Rule!!
  • Loving the Christmas photos Stevie, is that your country retreat in the background??????
  • Send me an e-mail off line with your address, I will send over something you may like, a gift from me to you, cheers Stevie, will check the show out, you know as a kid growing up I heard Bobby Vee singing "Girl Of My Best Friend" before I even knew Elvis sang it, strange but true!!!
  • will do Charlie. Joe Tex "Show Me" good song n the jukebox. got me doing the boogaloo here at the studio in Chavez Bay. Hey, it's 40 degrees here in California. brrrrrrrrr. Elvis did alot of music from others but he had style and voice. Making a new show for my segment. I recorded alot of my 45 rpm records for the new show.
    later, gator.
  • Brilliant Stevie, any songs you can't find let me know, I will see if we have them, okay?? All the best!!!
  • yeh crackin photos, the Modrapheniacs, always loving to add their club name onto their scoots...one of the few scooter clubs that can truthfully put their hands on their hearts and say they have ran continuous from formation....

For some reason that always annoys me, such as a certain scooter club on the west coast of England which goes by the name of a ska label kidding on the club has run since 1968...
