Glasgow Mods: Glasgow Mods Story

  • CharlieM · 1 year ago
"In the city, there's a thousand things I want to say to you!" These are some of them, one thing I always remember, there was always one of us, sometimes more than one of us, singing,no matter were or when, even in the back of police cars or vans, Li,Li!!! Well done Stevie, I was wondering who was going to write the Glasgow Mods Story,I still say Livi should be the one to do the book, trust me on that, maybe one day he will, who knows??
Brilliant insight into diffent Mods thoughts and recollections, the mutts nuts!! Cheers!!

This is brilliant Stevie loved reading everyones thoughts and memories it takes you back in time long may it go on thanks everyone.
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Brilliantly put together Stevie with memories from people from many different stages of the Glasgow Mod scene from 79 to the late 1980s. It's great for the people who were not around at the beginnng, and it it is also very informative to all of us who had thought that the Mod scene was past its best after the demise of The Jam and the Scene Club.

Here is a Glasgow Mods Story from Quinny, he has asked me on his behalf to comment.

"As we're reflectingon great Mod memories, her's my first one,for your pleasure.
the next involves, the Fuzz, Jimmy T, snowballs!! As I recall we met at "Mini's house,
    with a couple of the Gallaghers,Peter Feeney,the O'Reilly's,Breeby,Wee Eddie
(Blackhill) Zardo(Royston) a couple of others and myself,as we passed Nacey's house, a few more had joined, we headed to Balgrayhill to pick up Noodles and Pepsi.

We boarded the bus for Bellahouston Park, as the order of the day, more Mods, Big Angie and a few others had met up with us, we then, along with thousands of others, herded into the respective sections and then the wait began!! We got ourselves
into the best pposition, ready and waiting,"He's coming!! He's coming" were the chants."He's going to come right past us!" Almost within touching distance

"Right boys, get ready!" yells Mick, this was the moment! We hoisted the banner
(Hand painted in black on a huge piece of cloth) which read"!" GARNGAD MODS WELCOMES THE POPE As he passed in his "Mobile",not an eyelid was batted,
evenan almighty chorus of(You've guessed it) rang out. "WE ARE...WE ARE...
WE ARE THE MODS!!!!! Pure quality...... Quinny"

An absolute belter Quinny Cheers for that!!!

I totally remember the pope visiting Glasgow, but I'm afraid I was not a part of the banner gang. Great memory, thanks for sharing it with us all.
  • globiesstolemyrally · 1 year ago
phew...well i had no idea where it was going, but an absolutely unique tale from the quin. he's kept that quiet for 27 years!

it may not appear in jp2's memoirs, though.
  • NGMods · 1 year ago
You can always tell us the story about you going over the Kingston Bridge on a scooter with Beans, it would save me from actually listening to it again haha
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
I remember wee Beans, didn't he come from Bearsden Li Li !
  • Lammy Chick · 1 year ago
Great one Stevie, Steve wants to add a few.
  • stevie fae cranhill · 1 year ago
Great Lammy - that's exactly what i had hoped! There are already 1000's of great stories on the site but it can take a bit of searching to find them all. So i thought at some point we can try to preserve them in one place for everyone to see. i'll try to update this page to add some co-ordination.
  • Lammy Chick · 1 year ago
Stevie you deserve a medal or maybe a pint the next time we meet.
  • NGMods · 1 year ago
Well done Stevie, that NG bloke looks as though he knows what he's talking about haha
  • stevie fae cranhill · 1 year ago
With 1111 comments he was bound to say something sensible at some point....

By the way, have you noticed there's only 2 Chris C's? Not content with hogging all the comments space for himself - he's now got a doppelganger making comments as well!
  • NGMods · 1 year ago
On that note, you aren't the only Stevie H now posting on the site !
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
The day Mr G says something sensible is the day he buys a round in Stevie Li Li ! I have now noticed that I am starting out on the first process of a Quadrophnia type thingy, with four parts of the one person. I had a cunning plan to stop posting under ChrisC at a certain number (no one will guess) and then continue under another name, such as Vespa Dude, or is that ripping someone else off ?
  • Janny · 1 year ago
This is fab Stevie, just a shame that there are no girl's comments, but I'm sure that'll change!
  • stevie fae cranhill · 1 year ago
i'm sure there will be Janny - i'll check again through old comments and see what can be added - there are now 400 pages of old comments - i only managed to look through 150 and found the ones above.

ps could you look at your Terry and Julie post and see if looks alright to publish...
  • Lammy Chick · 1 year ago
Janny I have a few hazy memories of those times. If I ever get my x-mas shopping started I will pop some on the site.
  • eastLArevue · 1 year ago
thanks Stevie. well done. this is a good accounting from someone fae California. Life in Glasgow was quick pace. Are there Mods with your neighbors?? I am shure that England has many Mod groups. We commend your work again Stevie fae Cranhill. nice photos. KTF
  • steveo1 · 1 year ago
hi steve there are mods in england as you suspected in fact some of us glasgow mods live in england and a bit like missionary work, spread the word of mod lili
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Talking of English Mods, are the two Lancashire Mods John and Claire coming up for the weekend as well Stevie? Looking at the posts over the past few days it seems like there are a few Glasgow Mods now residing in Carlisle, is there something we ought to know Li Li !
  • stevie fae cranhill · 1 year ago
thanks again Steve - we've even got you speaking the lingo now - we'll make a Glasgow Mod out of you yet!

there are of course plenty of Mods in England - I'm living there for a start - and LammyChick and Steve01 and Jackie.

Seriously though, Mods started in England - we aren't hiding that fact - and we welcome any contribution from our English cousins (in fact it's fantastic to see the Mods Mayday 2009 being organised in Birmingham).

I hope nobody sees this as an exclusive club - it is 'The Glasgow Mods' but as anybody who has ever visited the city will tell you - your not long a stranger in this city!
  • eastLArevue · 1 year ago
hey I'm ready for some Mod gear. I checked out the hairdo page and like the CharlieM (fringe) cut (but me hair is on vacation) so I'll pass on Green's hair parlor. I enjoy the Mod clothes and hats. I am not sure to get a Vespa or Lambreta though.
Have fun tonight at the Twisted Wheel. Saludos to all the Mods.
Hey I saw a Revival May 2009 concert coming up. Good deal. Got to support.
Have fun and thanks for the information and fun time.
  • CharlieM · 1 year ago

  • eastLArevue · 1 year ago
thank you Charlie, good to hear that you are busy and moving about. Hope you had a great weekend with you friends. It is good that you Mods are staying in touch and visiting with each other, especially now. Be safe and stay dry up there, near the top of the world. To the Mods, a very Merry Christmas. May we prosper and help each other during the new year 2009.
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
The concert on Saturday was everything that I hoped and thought it would be Steven, absolutely first class. I hope both you and your good wife have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. As the James Stewart classic Christmas film said 'it's a Wonderful Life.'
  • TYB Civic mod · 1 year ago
hahah ahh doing the Monkees walk, always makes me smile that does...
  • CharlieM · 1 year ago
The sounds of The Briggait Cafe, everyone "buzzed" up, the music on The Jukebox, then walk down to The Band Stand, the total thrill of looking over your shoulder, and seeing, a line of Mods, behind you,I remember one Saturday,in George Square, Big Jason done a "head count", 364 Mods in total, almost one for everyday of the year!! No wonder the town was"quiet" that day, not a Punk, Biker, anywhere. Strange thing was, we were just walking through the town, having a ball,a total natural high of being there,I for one am proud to have been part of it, very proud.

    ABERDEEN CASUALS

Who remembers the time on Argyle st when around 20-30 of us were congregated at bottom of Buchanan st and from Central station appx 200 Aberdeen sheepies were being marched to Parkhead?

The Casuals started jeering us and were met with a 'we arra mods' in reply,, Then around 70 of them broke from Police escort and started running at us, Now someone, not sure if it was 'Mick the chef' or Vic fae Maryhill, But someone had came 'tooled up' with many a sellection and started dishing them out... as the casuals got closer they slowed as we didnt run, then all merry hell broke loose as the fighting started, we kicked there arses and they soon retreated as the police didnt intervene.... I believe its in a book by some Aberdeen casual who stated 'the hardest crew we ever fought with were THE GLASGOW MODS'.
    Glad I was there...
  • Davie Blair · 1 year ago
    Q. How does an Aberdonian find a sheep in long grass?
    A. Irresistable. . .
  • scooterrab · 1 year ago
    PS ON ABERDEEN CASUALS...
Remember WE didnt go looking for the trouble, but we never ran from it! Stood shoulder to shoulder and were looking after each other.

    Not troublemaking, more troubleshooting

Remember it well, people think these are"ghost stories" a lot of auld Mods, bumping their gums, blah, blah, blah, yep it happened, we're a bit more than that, the best kind, the human kind,no exaggeration, we were never a "hard crew" we were Mods, always someone trying to spoil the fun. Yeah, it was "Mick The Chef", always ready and prepared. Never had any bother from Casuals from Glasgow, never, as much as the Aberdeen ones.C'est la vie!!
  • TYB Civic mod · 12 months ago
talking of casuals, I remember we nearly got mugged by a gang of rangers ICF lot in Central station one nigght cos there was about 3 of us! Not long after this incident, (ps cheers Camey for the support that evening if ya remember), I remember bumping into a few of the ICF lot who were riding vespas at the time.... a young lad called Barry was always with them....he was always in awe of Donald if my memory serves me right.... ahh to be someone must be a wonderful thing....

  • ChrisC · 10 months ago
I remember Donnie Woods from Townhead. He used to go about with Rab Aitcheson . Sad to hear he has passed away.

If you look on the part of the site for the Glasgow Mod Weekender from last year I have posted a photo of Paul Viola sitting on his Vespa PX. You will have to go through quite a few to get to it right enough, it is photo number 120.
