    • The film did indeed change a lot of lives then and even now, still a classic. I live in London now, was a Govan Mod from 81 and hung about the Scene and Lindella. I've got to know an old mod...

My Maw’s A MOD

Started by James T · 9 months ago

A bit of fun for some of the old glasgowmods who fell about laughing when this came out, we could only see the funny side of this junk record trying to jump on the glasgow mods brand and presence back in the eighties. Peter’s first album released in 1982 was a collection of songs [. ... Continue reading »

  • Admin, did I not upload a scan of the picture sleeve somewhere ? I hope you enjoy this Chris !
  • N.G no artwork just email it...
  • Hi, had a great chuckle listening to this, wis the follow up to this that famous Glesga pairty song "Yours Maws Got Baws!" ha,ha!
  • Magic , fortunately not as i had expected pics of our maws fae the 60's!!!
  • now janny were not magicians but if you want to volunteer for finding them were only too happy to pass the responsibility over to you captain
  • There's an idea Janny, if anyone who had a Maw that was a Mod, in the 60's,70's and 80's,send your pictures in to Jimmy at admin, would be brilliant to see them.Even if your Da was a Mod too, remember the badges they used to sell in Virgin at Union Street? "F***K THE 80'S BRING BACK THE 60'S!" Excellent!
  • Excellent stuff guys. I never thought I would hear that again. Or should I change that to I hoped i'd never hear that again, although I wish I had a copy if it is worth £50. I'll say one thing, it provided us with one of the biggest laughs ever, and I can still remember trying to stop laughing as it was actually beginning to become sore.

Truth be told there were a few really shit bands about, and they did not have the excuse of it being a kid on. I remember Gownie bought an LP by a band (can't remember the name) who featured one or two guys who would later be in Tears for Fears. It was so bad that there were certainly tears listening to that shit. One track called 'Elvis should play ska' must be one of the worst records of all time. And the thought of Elvis actually playing ska doesn't bear thinking about either.
  • Is that another request Chris ? The Graduate became Tears For Fears, Seventeen became The Alarm, there are plenty more but my memory just fails me just now. Then there was bands like The Lambrettas, who went trendy but still kept the same name. David Essex done a song which was also bad M.O.D by M.O.D. Then who can forget Stevie Sharp and the Cleancuts (hope thats right) We Are The Mods, as for the lyrics, We are the mods, we are the mods we are, we are, we are the mods CLASSIC ! I loved it for its originality.

Funny thing was, I had a conversation the other week with an old Mod friend talking about Scheme, he couldn't remember them, I could, I'll leave it at that.

Now you know section, Theres was an advertisment advertising that The Purple Hearts where playing in Glasgow, 85 ? A few of the lads decided to go, I was not one, and turned up at the venue. Having realised that they were the onlys Mods there the penny should have dropped, but when the band started singing in a Glasgow accent haha ,they left ! On leaving they were informed that THIS Purple Hearts were a local Glasgow band, they might even have been supporting Scheme. We know who you are..........
  • Charlie I've got a picture of my dad on a Lambretta in 1965
  • Cool NG! send it in!!! - I'll have a hunt and see what pics I can find!
  • Well done to you NG for remembering The Graduate, how shit were they ! I am happy to say that I don't know of the David Essex number. I remember listening to a programme where he said that he had a TV 175 as well as some old motorbikes.

The Lambrettas actually had some decent songs and their album 'Beat Boys of the Jet Age' was quite good. Like a few others though I don't suppose they would really have been dedicated Mods. I also remember a Secret Affair record where they appeared on the front cover dressed as yokels standing next to a motorbike. I suppose thats the only way to stand next to a motorbike but it caused a wee bit of anguish at the time. It just shows how young and innocenti we were.

For anyone who has not heard of 'Scheme' do not even try to look them up. They were a ned/dope band who were popular during the early 80s. They used to play at Maxwell Plums in 1983 and all the neds from Easterhouse, Govan, Castlemilk and assorted other places lapped them up. Even Peter Capaldi and Graduate were better than Scheme.
  • I actually had The Graduate album untill it went "walkies" a couple of years ago, if I remember, they supported Prince Buster at one of the Glasgow Uni's in the early 80's before "Mad World" hit the charts, and good news for N.G I know someone who has a Peter Nardini album!! Plus a load of his records, he is big on the Folk Scene just now and played at The Clutha Vaults less than 4 days ago, very surreal, eh? I didn't realise how popular he was, long may it continue! Let's face it the world is to serious right now, laughter is the best medicine to cheer us all up,a smile cost less than an ex- wife, ha,ha!
  • I remember "Scheme" very well, from my neck of the woods (thats a wonderful expression, anyone know, where it came from or who invented this phrase?) I remember they played in Easterhouse, during the interval, Pek Purcell told me."Watch them closely when their off stage, they will be out "tanning" houses before they come back on!" Classic! Rock 'n' Roll, man! Agree with the following they had, very hard core mix of backgrounds, totally mental the ones I knew who followed them around.
  • I honestly dinnae think this record would cause such a stir, I might even become the most popular post on here. Charlie and admin get Mr Nardini booked up for a gig, look what you've started Chris !!

Janny how do you propose we should use our parents pictures ? don't have a problem posting, are we going to have a members parent section ????

Chris, I dont recall Secret Affair next to a motorbike, especially on a record cover, need to have a serious think about that one. I do however recall, seeing a picture of Ian Page on the back of a scooter, and it might even be Robert Lee (front cover Mods Mayday 79). I agree, I thought The Lambrettas LP was great, Beat Boys In The Jet Age, unfortunately some of their later stuff was crap ! ambience springs too mind. I also like the record on the Two-Stoke lable, Can't recall the title just now, it was a rip-off of the Two Tone lable, except on the sleeve, you had a Mod with his parka on.

Charlie, The Graduate LP that was actually a 10" mini LP I've never owned it, now I know why, but I have to say I do own a copy of the Elvis 45, shame on me.
  • Its amazing what the recollection of a mad rubbish record can do NG. I honestly did not think for a moment that anyone else would have heard of it. More to the point I did not think that anyone else would admit to having heard it.

The secret affair record was a 7 inch single and was released at the end of 1981 or the very beginning of 1982. If I am being honest now the picture may have been in a magazine instead of on the front cover of the single. But it most definitely did happen. They all had these smock things on and were standing around a trail bike, looking like a right bunch of Cornish farmers. (warmers) We all thought they were traitors to the cause although in truth a lot of Mods thought that Ian Page was a bit of an arse long before donning a smock.

I will also have to bow to others (well NGs) superior knowledge on The Lambrettas. I only ever heard their first LP although I did know that they had tried to break away from the Mod image quite early on. You had to have doubts about the lead singer ? Bird when he said the his favourite all time song was 'Psycho Killer' by Talking Heads.
  • If your looking for a reference to bad records from 79, I have more than plenty. "Uppers on the South Downs" front cover a Mod sitting on his 50 Special, if your wondering about the quality of the music, its best too just wonder, if you catch my drift.

I actually had Ian Pages email address from my time down in London, I actually thought he was a top bloke. The two of us were in the 100 Club on Oxford Street getting pissed, talking about Mod days, while my pal was dj-ing. Told him my favourite Secret Affair track was Dont Look Down, he was impressed by that, none of the usual My World or Time For Action stuff.

Admin theres another idea, ever met a Mod Icon ?

Last SA 45 was Lost In The Night, it had the four of them on the cover in black and white, but sadly no motorbike. The Purple Hearts had that safari gear on one of their 45s, As for The Lambrettas, who can ever forget their appearance on The Big Breakfast, for Mod Day ???? god even thats about 14 years ago now.
  • hahah Scheme, they were associated with the early football hooligans a lot when I was in my first scooter club...a reggae style band. They split up after some poor ned got stabbed to death at their last gig in the Barrowlands, neds fae different estates all in the hall together was bound to lead to bother.

The front man of Secret Affair is some laugh.... we had him out of his face one year at a bar on the Isle of Wight rally...he couldn't speak. We had taken 15000 Fabulous! stickers over to the Island and I think most of them ended up on him that night haha!
  • I have to admit that you guys who have actually met Mr page have got one over me here. I have never met the guy and he sounds as if he may be okay.He did receive a bit of stick for the motorbike thing back then though. My own favourite SA tracks are 'My World' and 'Do You know.' I thought they had some decent songs and My World is still one of my all time favourite songs even if it would be a common choice for a lot of people.

My mate who had the Graduate LP also had the 'Uppers on the South Downs' one.It was mostly garbage as far as I remember, and the nifty 50 on the front cover did not do it any favours. I remember one guy in 1983 who was in the Daily Retard who had a fifty covered in mirrors and lights. It must have been capable of a max speed of 4 MPH.

Does anyone remember the LP 'Odd Bods, Mods, and Sods.' What a weird name for an LP that was. I have not really met any Mod icons that I remember, but I did meet Rick Buckler twice, and I met Noel Gallagher who has an excelent Modish hairdo, and wears some good mod gear. I also met two of the guys from Kasabian. One had on a baker boy cap and fred perry. When I told him he looked like a young Stevie Marriot he was well pleased.
  • Ian Page had that Mod attitude which people didn't like, you've got to be one of us too understand, sort of thing. Cause he was out spoken, the music press just slagged him off and the rest of the Mod revival bands by late 1980. Some him Motherwell nine years ago, great gig, first song, My World, before I knew it we were down the front shouting We Are The Mods.

Chris there was actually two versions to the "Uppers On The South Downs" LP one with the Purple Hearts, one without, both were bad.

The gut the was in the Daily Retard, was also on Blue Peter at the time, they switched off the studio lights and he rode in with all his lights on. Peter Duncan, remember him? interviewed him. I may actually still have the videon footage of that somewhere !!!

Mod Icons so many to name but heres a few, Ian Mclagan, needs no introduction. Rod Stewart, got his autograph, just happen to have a Decca 45 sleeve in my three button jacket. The Action, 6'ts Mod legends, great blokes. Peter Quaife, the original Kinks Drummer. Art Wood, Ronnies brother and lead singer with The Artwoods. Rick Buckler, Jam drummer, also Ian Page needs no introduction......... All items and autographs will be appearing on the site in due course.
  • Dire Mod bands - 'Squire' - i, long ago, wasted some of my hard earned brew money on some dreadful lp and have played it only once since.

Meeting Mod legends - I once spoke to Edwin Starr in the toilets in (i think) Mardi Gras in 1987! That gig was one of the best i've even seen!
And i remember meeting Bobby Gillespie in some club in Brighton where he was dressed head to toe in mod gear - which was surprising as the previous time i had seen him he was a goth in glasgow...
  • Stevie, what Squire LP was is ? I actually thought they done quiet a few catchy tunes !! I remember going upstairs in Virgin one day and going through all the 45s, or should I say the plastic index cards, which you had to take too the counter and exchange for the record. Anyway I found one for Squire and thought I'll have that, joined the queue only to be told it wasn't in stock. I was well disappointed. Also liked their contribution to the Mods Mayday LP.

That reminds me, The BridgeHouse, were they recorded the Mods Mayday LP also have their own web site, and theres a few stories about the Mod revival, they are actually claiming the fact they started the Mod revival in 79, as their venue was the hip place too be in 79.
  • heres the address for the bridge house if anyones interested

    www dot thebridgehousee16 dot com
  • I was just looking down the lists there as I had not looked at this part for a few days.

I have to admit to only seeing the one version of 'Uppers on the South Downs' I did not know about the Purple Hearts version. I also did not know that that guy on the Vespa 50 was on Blue Peter, but I still have that clip in the house somewhere. Maybe I'll add it to my pictures.

You have certainly met a good few Mod icons NG. The one guy I would love to meet and pass some time with is Smokey Robinson, what a singer songwriter he was.
  • NG Jim - it's 'Get Smart', 1983. I've still got it and i'm afraid it hasn't got any better with age. I wasn't really into the mod revival bands anyway but some of the stuff was very good - like the Chords 'So far away'
  • Chris, I couldn't disagree with your choice of Smokey Robinson, the fact that The Who, Small Faces, The Action all the great Mod 6ts bands covered his songs just speaks volumes. I even remember Ian Page doing a great version of "Tracks of my Tears" live in Edinburgh.

If I recall rightly, the guy in the Daily Retard, was sitting on his scooter with his boating jacket on ! is that correct ? I'm currious too see if I have that footage on video tape, with all those lights and mirrors I was just surprised the thing moved. Goldie the labrador dog might be in the clip as well !!! haha

Anybody remember when Grange Hill done their Mods and Rockers play ?
  • Stevie, Squire Get Smart, is that the one with the pictures of topless girls on the front cover ?? never owned it if it was, dont think it would have went down too well with the oldies. Got their 1st 45 Get Ready To Go, and all it is is three chords and repeating the title, total classic. Kirsty MacColl actually sings on Squires 3rd 45 Girl On A Train and the B side Does Stephanie Know. Thats the little known fact for the day.
  • I just thought that Smokey Robinson and his Miracles was the best Motown band from the early 60s. From 'Shop Around' to 'Gotta Dance to Keep from Crying' to 'Mickeys Monkey' every one a Mod classic, and the last two also reminds me of the Scene Club.

I definitely think you have got the right guy NG. But I was not aware of his appearance on Blue Peter. I am sure I remember somewhere that he had a 90 or 100 cc engine in his 50 , but even with that it could not have moved at more than 4mph.

As far as I remember Squire were on the Mayday 79 LP. The copy I have is so scratched that it is unplayable now, but I seem to remember Squire having a couple of good songs. They could have done a version of 'Elvis in the Chip shop' with Kirsty McColl NG.

On a slightly side note. In the Barnes Mod book there is a woman near the front that looked very like the Valerie Singleton who was on Blue Peter in the 1960s and early 1970s, I always wondered if it was her.
  • Mods Mayday 79 there was also a few different releases of that LP at the time, check the spelling on the front cover "15 new numbers" or "15 new nunbers" and also catalogue reference numbers, Just obtained a rare Secret Affair poster from 79 promoting the Glory Boys LP, I suppose its for the archives now and not the wall. The CD I believe has all the extra tracks that never made the LP, I really like the Small Hours cover version of Doris Dukes "Can't Do Without You" nice soulful tune and as for the Merton Parkas tracks......
The Secret Affair set came out on limited vinyl around 88/89 titled "City of Dreams" not the easiest of LPs to get ones hands onto mind.
  • Fudgie, Michelle, Stevie, Jackie, Lammy Chick, Sting, Angie and all you other newbies on here, this is worth a listen !

Is it not because of sounds like this, this is why we became Mods ?

Michelle glad I've managed to get you posting again, thats you on the commenters table, the only way is up now. How about a wee dance to this ? haha
  • Is Peter Nardini the guy who writes the manifesto's for the S.N.P? If not he should be, they S.N.P are too serious,"My Maws A Mod!" would be a good party song for them, better than Labours "Things Can Only Get Better" changed days since that was their campaign song, "My Maws A Mod" has better lyrics, and a helluva lot funnier! Peter Nardini for Prime Minister I say!
  • Thats what we need to remember when others join the site Charlie, we need to get them up to speed with whats already on here. It's very easy to forget !

Fudgie that reminds me, I wasn't downloading but uploading, some poor sod has got to put the stuff on the web for others to download haha
  • Is that you "window surfing" N.G ho,ho!
  • Sorry to disappoint Charlie, but I have now moved over to Firefox hohoho
  • As far as I am aware Charlie, Peter Nardini supplies the ice cream for the SNP. I met Alex Salmond a few weeks ago and he was telling me that he used to have a Vespa SS 180. As far as I know our current PM Gordon Brown used to be in the Blue Angels, a bit of a wild man by all accounts. Thats why he never ventured into the east end last week, in case he got tied up with all his old mates again.
  • By all accords I'm still here Chris, Just posting to make sure I am.

I know you won't let the side down, and will keep on posting. If not I'll drop Charlie off at your front door to lodge for a few days haha
  • Wonder if Gordon Brown was one of the Blue Angels who got his comeuppance down at The Suspension Bridge along with rest of the motley crew who came down on that particular Saturday in the 80's to "haunner" the Punks and Skns against us? Got a surprise that day,eh?
  • This is great Charlie, being invisible, I suppose its like comparing it to an active lurker !
  • Is a lurker one of those big dogs NG ?

Gordon Broon was probably amongst the mob then Charlie. Him and Tony Blair, and Alistair Darling were absolutely off their rockers. The best name I have ever heard for a politician (or anyone for that matter) must be Ed Balls. We all know thats what they talk but theres surely no need to name yourself after it.
  • I wonder if Ed Balls ever got kicked in the ballots during a bi-election....... Don't say it, already got my coat on!
  • No, I think that was a good (and witty) reply. So you can keep the parka in the cupboard for now.

I am sure I know what they would say to him if he made a mess of something.
  • Wouldn't it be fun if his sister was a "Hairy" "Hey you ya wee Hairy Baws!" lol extra loud!
  • They should have a Saturday night show 'The Ed Balls Show' with Peter Nardini as the co-host/singer, in much the same way as Jonafan Woss has the band whose name I forget. It could be one to rival his mum's show from the 60s 'The Lucille Balls Show.'

Did you know that he (Woss not Nardini) had a Vespa a few years ago.
  • I think that guy Hilary Benn is worth a mention ! whats that all about ?
  • Don't forget his brothers show in the 70's and 80's Cannon and Balls! Also his uncle Sean Connery in Thunderballs! ho ho!
  • So who starred in the film The Cannonball Run then ?
  • My worst nightmare just came true!! Jerry Lee wrote an ode to Ed "Great BALLS Of Fire!" Ooohhh noooo!
  • "Good Gawd Ma Uncles A Mod!!" =S
    Mods Ya Bass!
  • If only I had found this sooner

    http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=rU8KUucwQJY
  • Saw this a while back Felonius - love the way he does the Beatle head shake!
  • Nice to see this post has been unearthed again.

The picture sleeve is rare !
  • OMG this is what my kids thinks about me brilliant just need my lambretta!!!
  • This is brilliant not just my kids but the hubby as well its bloody great...
  • Have you got a pair of 2-Tone knickers as well Jackie? Couldn 't resist
    that one, ho, ho!!
  • I will soon i will sew two together haha
  • omg still love this its still what my household thinks hahaha.
  • Good to hear that you have taken the time and effort to revive this long extinct post Jackie. In reality this has to go down as one of the top two bestest Mod revival records ever, with the top spot obviously going to 'Elvis Should Play Ska' by Graduate. It has also been noted that Peter Nardini was the real King of the Mods, as he had at least 40 lights and 38 mirrors on his ice cream van, which takes him even above the mad guy on the moped (not adam ant) that you lot keep trying to promote as the KOTM.
