Yeah, it was definitely the Easter bank holiday NG. We jumped on the bus down to Morecambe and got there about 9 bells on the Friday night.

We only went out to the campsite where most of the Glasgow crowd were based once. They were charging about £2 for a can of beer, which was a lot in 1984. Definitley All Mod (or scooter boy) Con merchants.

I remember on the Sunday wee Melvo was skint but was determined to go to the night on the pier. He actually walked through the shallow water and climbed up. He was covered in goo but it saved him a few quid.

That was a good bit of fortune there NG. You didn't happen to have any input into the whereabouts of that years jaunt did you ? I always remember it was a very good weekend. The weather was great and there was not any trouble until the usual Sunday night fracas. We just slept at the Friday allnighter and went to our digs on the Saturday. Despite not having lots of money it was fairly enjoyable. We actually did not have much contact with any of the Glasgow people in attendance and just did our own thing. I was going to say Glasgow Mods there but remembered that there were not many Glasgow Mods at Morecambe in 84.

It's a pleasure Charlie. Most of them on their own are a bit banal, but the fact that so much has changed in the city adds a bit to them. The one taken at the old Glasgow tech shows a skyline that no longer exists in the north of the city. I am also not the worlds biggest admirer of scooter rally photo's as they are usually much of a much to me. But I thought this one was like a 'Last of the Mods' number with lovely scooters and people looking good, which was becoming a rarity then at rallies.

The one of the four of us was taken at Buchanan Street bus station as we waited for our bus going to the Jam gig at Ingliston. Poor Eddie Donnelly (purple jacket and sky blue hipsters) was soaked to the skin waiting for Shirley. I don't recall if she ever turned up.

Brilliant extra photos Chris, looks like a Mod scene version of
"The Warriors!" except more style, pictures are a statement of
their times, a Glasgow all of us remember so well then, these

Cheers for adding the photo's Jimmy. They are quite good in that they show parts of the city that are no longer the same. The wee hut with all the grafitti was next to Glenconnor park in the Garngad. I personally had nothing to do with such mindless vandalism, it was Shug Paton.

How did your night at the gig go Stevie. Was it as good as it sounded, or were you wishing you had a gallon of Shammy halfway through proceedings ? And you will have to add on the rest of your photo's NG. For the first time ever I included a photo from a scooter rally. (Morecambe 84) I just thought the Mod girl looked good as did all three scooter in the frame.

i remember once coming up to Glasgow with an english guy i worked with and taking him into the Sarry Heid - i warned him about the dangers of local cocktail but he said he could manage it, no problem - he took one gulp of the shammy and spewed all over the bar - the Sarry Heid regulars didn't blink an eye of course.

I know what you mean Jackie. I am not much of a cider fan myself although we used to buy a great drink called 'Shammy' from the Sarry Heid in the Gallowgate for our pre-Scene Club cargo.It was a mixture of wine,cider, and any old slops that was lying around. It was certainly quite potent, especially once a bottle of wine was added.

Hi Chris i live about 8 miles outside Bristol which comes into somerset country and yes its rough cider here wouldnt drink it myself it looks awful am glad im a glasgow bunkin and not a somerset one !!!

I will do my research then Jackie. I had heard of a penny chew, but a river one.

As I said earlier I found it difficult to make out what they were on about,and the same probably applied the other way around. Half the time I would just nod and say 'yes' to anything said. As far as I remember Bristol is Cider country, but I may be getting mixed up with Somerset.

I have heard of the Bridge over the River Kwai, but not over the River Chew NG.

I am sure Jackie owns one of those massive homes in Bristol that were built in the 18th century by the slave traders. There will be about 14 bedrooms, 10 toilets, 3 kitchens, and a massive back garden for parking the scooters. The only problem I can see is that the Bristolonians will not be able to understand us, and we will certainly not be able to understand them. I have met a good few people from there and they speak with some crazy accent.

Jackie, I have to report a massive change in the weather here. For the second day running the sun is splitting the sky. So gather the family together, jump on your scooter, and come back up to the finest city in Europe. Apart from Rome obviously, and Paris, and Vienna, and Barcelona. But definitely the finest in this crazy island.
