Either the EE Mod in question had amazingly skinny legs,or they were strangely baggy ski pants.

I wonder who first thought it would be a good idea to shave off people's eyebrows ? And did any of the girls shave other girls eyebrows off at a party ? I don't seem to remember the girls having this shaving fixation.

Re: The Beginning of The Glasgow Mods

Hi Chris I remember a certain East End Mod down The Barras telling everyone how "groovy" his sky blue skin tight hipsters were, butterfly vents at the bottom, covered buttons, what he didn't know that I was in the Easterhouse "Buy Well" with his sister when she bought the girls ski pants they were made from, she was a cracking machinists, I watched her make them that day, I had paid her to make me a waist coat and hipsters, real hipsters and not ski pants conversions, it was priceless, he came down The Barras on his Lambretta 125 with his l Plates, he didn't know I had told a "few" lasses! He thought they were touching up his legs, cause he was looking "cool" Hee hee! He still didn't know when one of the lasses commented he had beautiful child bearing hips! Got him back for shaving my eye brow off at a party in Bishopbriggs, gelled and laquered my hair as well, eggs and flour the lot! He didn't laugh too well when the truth came out! I did! Especially as I had asked one of the Mods to loosen his Lammy exhaust while the lasses gave him the Rock God treatment! Twice in one day!

Re: The Beginning of The Glasgow Mods

The abidding memory I have of the girls Mod gear is those suede and leather jackets, both the short versions and the three quarters length. How so many of the girls managed to get of hold of them in such good condition was always a mystery to me.

I always really fancied a light suede jacket with a leather collar (a boys one) 1960s style, but did not ever see one in the Briggait. Sadly I did not have the kings ransom it would have cost to get one made.

I also always thought that the girls hair was immaculate, and looked brilliant in that 60s bob.

Re: The Beginning of The Glasgow Mods

To go back to NG's Q's (post 25!) - I think it was more to do with attitude than location, knew girls from outwith Glasgow for whom the "Modette" tag also got their hackles up - think if you were a "purist" (and the mini skirt look aint it!) or as near to that as you could be, then the modette tag felt all wrong!

Also agree with Chris C's post (30) as to what we wore at the time - more clued into the 60ts look - fitted leather ( got these in some amazing colours - remember having a bottle green one and a peacock blue one) / suede coat - "Briggait" turtle neck / twin set, trous etc. Would also echo Lammy's post as to how difficult it was to get "matching stuff" used to raid my mum's gear quite frequently!

As for the " dressing like a boy" thing that Lammy mentioned - for someone like me who is almost 6 foot, in the 80ts no womens shops sold trousers with long inside legs - so I spent most of the time wearing blokes trousers anyway - even b4 my mod days - so what a joy it was to discover that my 6ts counterparts had done the same - it was meant to be!

Re: The Beginning of The Glasgow Mods

You are correct about us guys (mostly) not having the difficulty of having to find a bag to match our shoes Lammy. But we still put in a lot of effort in the rummaging through all sorts of garbage to find a gem in Paddy's. I remember once going through a pile of crap (not literally) and found a French t-shirt with a three quarter length sleeve. I wore the thing to death I loved it so much.

When I first went up to the Lindella and Scene Club I was astounded at the effort that people put into getting everything just right. From the cut of cloth, to covered buttons, to making sure the hair was perfect. The amount of time Bobby Black spent on getting his points right on his French cut hair was incredible.

Sorry to bring back bad Ski Pants memories Lammy. I always thought they looked brilliant. (On the girls that is) I don't think anyone would accuse you of looking boyish in them.

Re: The Beginning of The Glasgow Mods

Awwwwwwh! The pains of finding a bag and shoes that match Lammy Chick! Look on the bright side , the "new" men of today also try too get a "man" bag to go with their shoes! Thank God I am a Mod! Their truly in touch with their feminine "issues" Don't worry I for one appreciated all the effort you'se Mod girl-ettes! put into getting dressed up for us Mods, As The Contours sung "First I Look At The Purse!" What a song! You can't beat a bit of Motown ALTHOUGH THE "New" Godather Of Soul Jerry Lee Lewis takes some beating! I do recall the Scene Club days and Chris your right, we girls worked blinking hard hunting through Paddies Market trying to find the right clothes, bags and shoes, to look the business. You guys are so lucky, you don't have the pain of searching to find a 6t's bag and shoes that match (Arghhhhhhhhhhh) in the year 2008!. Ski Pants, i think I might have worn them once in the 80's, but I had safely erased that from my memory until Chris mentioned them above Arghhhhhhhhhhhh again.

Re: The Beginning of The Glasgow Mods

there was a lot of beautiful dressed girls around, you couldn't fault them, they looked the part and more, even now there are a lot of girls around who are WOW! No names mentioned too protect the innocent, mainly there HUSBANDS! ha ha! N.G I don't think there is anyone around who never got it in the ear from a Mod girl, then as well as now! Anyway do you think a Mod would admit to being "hen pecked" to his mates? Its the way of the world, you might wear the hipsters, but a girl will always tell you what colour! Unless you are single of course, eh?

Re: The Beginning of The Glasgow Mods

I would certainly agree with Stevie that the majority of Mod girls favoured the early 60s look of the slightly longer skirt, (often checked) suede jacket, with leather collar, and a crew neck sweater underneath. Another item that was very poular was ski pants, and would often be worn with a wee anorak.

A few did wear suede mini skirts with the suede boots, and I have to say that this also looked very good.

The sta press trousers were always good to start off with. They actually looked okay for a few weeks, and then sadly they looke like shit. After a while most people got their trousers made. As Charlie said in an earlier e-mail, you could do it the less expensive way by buying the material, and then taking it to the tailors to be made up.

Re: The Beginning of The Glasgow Mods

I would also add that very few, if any, of Glasgow's Mod girls went for the mini skirt look. (NG I think) As far as I remember, and at the moment my memory is quite good, no one seriously called the girls Modettes during the early 80s in Glasgow. For one it sounded stupid and ignorant, and secondly the girls would rightly be slightly miffed.

It sounds a bit patronising (and it is not meant that way) but some of the girls looked out of this world. If you walked into the Scene Club at the end of 1981 you could easily think you had stepped through a time slip into the 1960s. The girls definitely looked every bit as good as the guys, fact.

Re: The Beginning of The Glasgow Mods

I would also like to put it on record that none of the Mod Girls in the Glasgow Civics considered themselves to be "Modettes" it just wasn't the done thing. In some other forums it would seem very shallow to go on about how people looked but in a Mod forum that is surely what it was (and is) all about. A lot of Mods of both sexes spent a lot of time researching the look and then set about getting it just right. This sounds easy, but it was not so as a lot of the clobber could not be bought in your normal high street shop.

I'll happily admit that some of the Mod girls were stunning, but I can say for definite that they had the look down to a t as much as the best of the guys.

Re: The Beginning of The Glasgow Mods

Forgiven - the parity thing between the sexes was really important, that's why we were p*ssed off with the "modette" handle - us female mods had come along way on the equality route from our 60's counterparts, and were damn sure that we weren't gonna be any lesser respected that you guys!

Re: The Beginning of The Glasgow Mods

I hope Suggsy does not look in on the site.
