Great article Chris and a lot of good information. I'm sure Jimmy will get all the proper pictues etc associated with the club, up in due course.

    Thanks for the support
  • N.G. MODS · 1 year ago
Colin Stewart the DJ, was there ever other DJ's that got a guest spot ? what would happen if Colin couldn't make it, was there a stand in ?

Jimmy is there not a Scene Club membership card posted on the site somewhere, that we can add to this page ?
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Strangely enough NG, I don't ever remember wee Colin not doing the DJ. I'm sure it must have happened, but I can't remember it. And he also did the DJ for the Lindella as well. I have seen a membership somewhere, and I am sure I have one that I used knocking about the house somewhere.

Brilliant article Chris, I remember at one point the Scene Club Cafe on a Saturday afternoon, selling records, I bought a lot of Jam records there as well as Madness "Embarassment"I used to go up to the Cafe with Janice, Shirley Ross and Chalky all from Cumbernauld. Remember Colins music very well, that was the first time I had heard The Beau Brummels "Laugh,Laugh" and The Swinging Medallions "Double Shot Of My Baby's Love" along with The Yardbirds, The Hollies , The Doors, Jefferson Airplane. He was years ahead of his time music wise. Brilliant music, it was never dull, always remember the red lights in the"chill out room" eveyone there "fumbling" around, kinda weird I remember on numerous occassions, going in there with a girl and leaving with someone elses??? The girls didn't seem to mind as they were doing the same with the guys??? Quite trippy in fact, I only ever taken alcohol at The Scene, wasn't till a couple of years later I got into taking pills side of things.Beatiful times at The Scene Club.

Cheers guys. I have to admit that it was very enjoyable doing the script, but the only setback is that it could have easily went to at least 2,000 words. But then I did not want to kill everyone on the site with boredome.

There was so much going on at that time. Some of you will remember the Christmas 81 allnighter, and some of the videos that were shown in the bigger of the side rooms. Another weird thing I recall was that there was always guys in the girls toilets.

I remember both Shirley and Janice Charlie, but I am not so sure about Chalkie, unless he the Phil Davis character. I remember Shirley went out with a guy called Dixie for ages, and then later with Eddie Donnelly. When I first went up the clubs Janice was seeing a friend of mine called Alex Frackleton, although it did not last too long.

I won't go into what I got up to in that wee side area on the left hand side as you came into the club. I think I'll keep that info for my soon to be released best selling expose on the Glasgow Mods.
  • N.G. MODS · 1 year ago
Chris how did you know there was always guys in the girls loos?
  • N.G. MODS · 1 year ago
Well done Jimmy in attaching Spenos membership card to the page, at least somebody is active !!!

My apologies Chris, didn't happen to be Uncle Charlie did it ?
  • LC · 1 year ago
Well done Chris great write up for The Scene Club, great to see an area dedicated to such a significant part of the Glasgow Mod Scene. Yes the decor was rather dark, black and red was the main colour scheme, black walls and red lighting. There was always blokes in the ladies, but it was the norm in the club and nobody really bother, cause they had unisex toilets in the continent for years at that time and we liked to think that we were rather cosmoplitan. I remember the room at the very back selling snacks, drinks and doing re-runs of the Quad video. I don't recall the x-mas all-nighter, but if memory serves me right, the last night of the club was an all-nighter. I don't ever recall Colin not being on the decks and I never seen him on the dancefloor either. We were told his collection was handed down to him from his brother, who was an original 6t's Mod, but i don't know if there is any truth to that? Ghost in my House was one of my fav's from the club and remains to be one of my top five to this day.

I remember the way we danced also, as it was so crowded, we had to do what I call "tight dancing" generally just moving your legs. No room for Northern Soul dancing in the club generally, main because there was no room, but also due to the fact that most of us didn't really know how to do it LOL! Boxer Beat and Dexy's were our intro to Northern Soul and I remember all the guys trying to do backflips and the hands behind the back dance. I was never a fan of Boxer Beat, therefore I have never been able to master the Northern Soul style of dancing, but i'm glad to say that I have moved on a bit from "tight dancing".

I can see why you describe the site as "approx" 64 Oswald St, as i've looked a few times and it's hard to imagine where the entrance was now.

I never had a membership, either I could not afford one or they simply stopped issuing them by my time???

I don't recall much classic R&B tunes being played it was more like you say, Doors, Yardbirds, Who, Spencer Davies Group, Rolling Stones, Small Faces, Georgie Fame, Mowtown, Blue Beat etc
  • LC · 1 year ago
Charlie, don't remember going to the club on a Saturday afternoon, we were to busy up Paddy's Market surcing out an outfit the Saturday night LOL! See you Friday?
  • LC · 1 year ago
ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRh! spotted a spelling mistake whilst waiting for the comment to load "sourcing" not "surcing" LOL :-)
  • steveo1 · 1 year ago
haha anyone remember the thunderbirds tune and joe 90 getting played at the scene club,to my shame i bought the joe 90 theme tune,oh the shame of it now lol
  • LC · 1 year ago
Hehe, I recall sharing a 1/4 of vodka, straight, with my bud Angela before we went to the scene each week at the bandstand, chessboard or St Enouch's. Oh how young we were LOL, takes more that a half of a 1/4 bottle now to get me on the dancefloor :-)
  • Robert · 1 year ago
I have fond memories of Brookes bar and the Scene club. Then hanging around George Sq waiting for the bus and the sing song home normally led by Bo Bo from Craigend. Met up with Colin a few times and he did have one massive record collection. He played This is Hip by John Lee Hooker and that was me hooked, along with other R&B Classics. There was one song that filled the floor called My boy Lollipop and then somebody started a punch up and then it was a free for all. Mad at the time but lived to tell the tale. Hey Billy C if you are out there mate lost your number after the Glasgow mod weekender, so if you've got mine get in touch.
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
There were so many great tracks played at the Scene Club that it would be difficult to remember a lot of them, but it was definitely more 60s music and soul based, with the soul emphasis on Motown and other Atlantic classics. As far as I remember Northern Soul did not really feature until well into 1982. I agree Lammy that the packed dance floor would have prohibited the northern style of dancing, but until near the end no one was really interested (or knew about) that style anyway. I do remember the Pigbag crap and people starting to copy the northern style but I would say the Scene Club was on the way out by that stage. One of my favourite tracks was also the R Dean Taylor classic. I have tried to get the original on a CD for ages now, and all I seem to hear is a garbage version. The same applies to 'Everything I Own' by Ken Boothe. The one I keep hearing now has these wee really annoying xylophone bits in it now.

Its good to realise that the Scene Club had the same impact on others that it had on me. I absolutely loved going up there each weekend, even if it was not licensed. It seems to be then, that wee Colin was indeed there all the time. And you are spot on Lammy, I also can't recall the cool DJ taking to the dance floor.
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Great to hear the replies filling in all the bits that I have forgotten about. I knew Colin quite well and he also told me that his brother was a Mod in the late 60s, and that was where his collection started.

I had forgotten all about those mad late buses Robert. I got on them a few times, but on other occasions I would just walk back to Sighthill. I also remember Bobo. He was at a party we were all at in Dumbarton. These bikers all came over and started thrashing some of the scooters. No one sussed this at first, but Bobo seen it all and was supposedly shouting out of the window at them. Naturally they ignored him and his PX got kicked over before everyone spilled out of the party.

I also have to agree that a lot of the Ska songs did tend to start a bit of a ruck. That was why wee Colin was not so prone to play them after a while.
  • N.G. MODS · 1 year ago
Chris just sent a mp3 of R Dean Taylor to your email address along with the scratches, I just recorded it for Jackie last week. Enjoy
  • Charlie · 1 year ago
The Hollies "Bus Stop", Bob & Earl "The Harlem Shuffle" Shocking Blue "Venus" and R Dean Taylor "There's A Ghost In My House" would be my favourites for a Scene Club Jukebox, anyone else got their fave songs? Maybe start a kind of Mods "Stars On Sunday" for us Jurassic Parkas!lol!
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Good idea Charlie, about favourite songs, or songs that evoke memories of their club. So the people who went to the One Up could also say what songs played there stayed in their minds.

From the Scene my own favourites were 'Here Comes my Baby' by The Cat, 'Gotta Dance to Keep From Crying by The Miracles, 'Sweet Soul Music' by Arthur Conley, 'I'm a Man' by Spencer Davis, '123' by Len Barry, 'Almost Grown by The Small Faces. 'I had too Much to Dream Last Night' by The Electric Prunes. There were so many amazing songs played by Colin, who everyone will remember looked like a cooler version of the young Bob Dylan, that it would take forever. Add on the other songs that have also been mentioned as well, so just about every one was brilliant.

The only song I did not really like was 'Light my Fire' by The Doors. I liked the song okay, but it lasted too long to dance to, and I always remember most people giving up on it halfway through at the Scene Club.
  • steveo1 · 1 year ago
everything i own by ken boothe always reminds me of the scene club, brilliant record also colin deserves a lot of credit for opening all our eyes to proper mod music
  • steveo1 · 1 year ago
brillant chris, forgot all about here comes my baby by cat stevens
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
There were so many fantastic tracks played there steveo1. You are spot on about wee Colin. I will admit 100% that it was from going up to the Scene and Lindella that I really started to become aware of the best of the Mod music. I also got to listen to a lot of great music by going to friends houses, and hearing their stuff. It really was such a wonderful time to be young, and obviously, be a Mod.
  • LC · 1 year ago
Chris the CD version of R Dean Taylor's track is on 6t's Soul Mix CD by Universal records, but i must admit it wasn't easy to find it on CD. My intro to so called Northern Soul was Boxer Beat and Dexy's and I hated it, so muh so that I assumed that all NS was probably rubbish after that and avoided thereafter, however I'm glad to say that I have since discovered proper NS and generally like it, Do I Love You is one of my fav's. Although I do listen to a lot of NS now, it will never, IMO, beat Classic American R&B, it's just great to dance to. I recall all the tracks you have mentioned above, but the Electric Prunes is one I don't recall. I remember Colin playing "I got you Babe" by Sonny and Cher, I must admit I would not be impressed if it was palyed at Friday St for example now, as my taste in music has matured over the years.

We always used the late buses to get home, as it was to far to walk. Generally they were a riot, singing, smoking, drinking, shouting, fighting etc etc don't think I would be brave enough to go on one now LOL!

Who was at the last night of the Scene Club?

My Scene Club Jukebox would contain:-

Ghost in my House by R Dean Taylor
Paint it Black by The Rolling Stones
Everything I Own by Cat Stevens
    Shout by LULU
Keep on Running by Spencer Davies Group
House of the Rising Sun by The Animals
We got to get out of this Place by The Animals

I will leave a few slot in the Jukebox for others to add theirs.
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Like most people at the time I certainly did not get into Northern soul classics to start off with Lammy. I was always a very keen record collector and would spend hours in the Barras, the Briggit, and second hand shops. I looked into the Northern soul thing and soon managed to purchase quite a few good records before a lot of people were clued up properly. At one point I had about four original copies of 'Breaking Down the Walls of Heartache' by Johnny Johnson, and then sold three of them to the scooter boys. I also sold some LPs to Joe Baz, which I regretted afterwards.

I'm amazed you don't recall the Electric Prunes track being played in the Scene. I had never heard of the band but I thought the song was incredible so I asked Colin about it. I do remember 'I got You Babe.' I especially remember it at the December 81 allnighter, but I won't go any further or even mention Shug Paton's name in connection with it.

As per usual, we were all at the Scene Club for the last night. It was a great night to end it, but it was so sad to realise it was the end. If I am being honest I did not really think it would be the end. I thought it would close for a few weeks to frighten us all into behaving like human beings, but sadly I was wrong.

Another track I would like to add to my favourites was 'La La La Lies' by The Who.
  • Charlie · 1 year ago
Hi Lammy Chick after my senses being battered by 9 versions of "Wade In The Water" at Friday Street in one go, not so long ago, "I Got You Babe" will always be music to my ears, they won't play it at Friday Street as people will enjoy it! Its a song the whole world knows, feel the petals, man! They play Rockabilly more than Mod music, and thats the truth.I am a Mod.I see more trendys up dancing than Mods, Rockabilly ain't R'n'B they say there isn't enough Mods, I can see plenty of them. Why are they all sitting in a corner? Cause its not Mod.Look how quickly the floor filled up when they played "If I Were A Carpenter" and how desolate it becomes the next record, and the trendys are giving it laldy! Says it all!
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
I'v never been to Friday Street Charlie, but your description of it does not exactly sound like it would be my cup of cappuchino anyway. To put it diplomatically, I am not a fan of rockabilly music. I have known a lot of people who are, and I liked the vast majority of them. But the red neck music is not for me.

Two other classics I feel I should add to the Scene Club jukebox are 'First I Look at the Purse' by The Contours, and 'Needle in a Haystack' by The Velvelletes.
  • Charlie · 1 year ago
I loved the Scene Club and the Lindella, they were a place you could be a Mod amongst Mods, it was one long party another song for the Jukebox "Hello I Love You" The Doors oh can't forget wee Rab Souters song "Alternate Title" The Monkees, used to nip my heid singing it when he was drunk! (Only joking Rab, cause your bigger than me)
  • STING · 1 year ago
    hey charlie remember me?
  • STING · 1 year ago
    this is hard work!!!!!
  • JimmyTheMod · 1 year ago
hi sting glad you found us .... it has been very hard work to get the website up and running, I am now getting some good feedback from others, feel free to share your stories... KTF
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Well remembered Charlie. 'Hello I Love You' was also one of the Scene Club standards. Very popular on the dance floor too.

I am not so sure about this claim of seeing someone drunk in the Scene Club. I think you are forgetting that it was unlicensed and only sold ginger. (for those outside Glasgow Fizzy drinks)
  • N.G. MODS · 1 year ago
Hi Sting, glad you found us, hope your behaving yourself ! Whats Cha up to ?
  • TYB Civic mod · 1 year ago
I started my toon mod phase after the Scene had closed sadly ..... sounds like I missed a mad place.... as a young teen mod in the early 80's there was not too many places to hit of an evening in Cambuslang sadly....
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
After the demise of the Scene Club it was definitely a time when not a lot was happening TYB. We still went down to the Clydeside for a good while, but there was nowhere else to go, and not a lot to do. Now and then there would be a Globetrotters do in the Star Club, but it was not that good really, unless you were into northern, more northern, and a bit of clash and that sort of nonsense. The great music we heard in the Scene Club disappeared at the same time as the club closed its doors.
  • TYB Civic mod · 1 year ago
remember going to the Star Club on the Clydeside for a few Globies do's, guess I was at that age where it was not always easy to get served in bars so didn't go into the city centre too often at nights...most were spent in Cambuslang, hangin out with the mods an scooterboys and sneaking down to a local boozer where some of us got served regular haha
  • Charlie · 1 year ago
Hi Sting long time no see of course I remember you, how are you doing mate? Hope life has treated you well in the "gap" years of a century ago! ha ha! Nice to know you are around. How is Cha? Tell him we are asking for him, and hope he is doing well. Are you married with kids?
  • jackie · 1 year ago
Sting, jackie here from EK another face from my photo's i haven't been on this site for long it's great, hope things are good with you.
  • stevie fae cranhill · 1 year ago
Another West End Mod appears! Sting, I remember you and your brother, Cha.

Fudgie, and Michelle also arrived on the site recently - the place is being overrun with west end mods now!

Still, East End Mods Rule OK!
  • N.G. MODS · 1 year ago
Where you at the Scene club Stevie or was that before your time as well ?
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Stevie, we've already been over this in your absence to Saltcoats. It has now been established and accepted as fact that the NGM were the most tip top, top cats.
  • stevie fae cranhill · 1 year ago
The Scene club was before my time - although i remember going to my first mod dance some time in '83 or maybe 84 - and drinking coke cola. i thought it was just fantastic, all the great music and dancing...hearing songs for the first time and being amazed by them.
  • stevie fae cranhill · 1 year ago
If NG Mods are so tip top how comes you still haven't mastered the Gravatar (after Jimmy has practically spelled it out for you)?

You cant be a FACE if you dont have a Grava'tar!
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Ah, thats another matter entirely Stevie. I have done all there is to do with the Gravatar thing, and yet it has not appeared. Personally I sense an EE Mod conspiracy up there with JFK. The gravatar I have planned is so incredible it will have you all worshipping at the NGM alter.
  • karen fae spamhill · 1 year ago
Saltcoats… Im sure he spent a week up & down Byres Road, trying to look cool for the uni crowd!
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Theres nothing better than a week in Saltcoats Karen, unless its a week in Stevenson. And even then you have to watch out for the Martha and the Vandellas classic....'Quicksand.'

Despite claims of being in France we knew the reality. Stevie was spotted in the amusements in Saltcoats playing the penny push machine. That obviously explains why there were no cool t-shirts forthcoming.
  • N.G. MODS · 1 year ago
I've got a few photos up from the amusements in Saltcoats, from a few years ago, don't knock it too you've tried it, I say.

Finally got my tape with The Jam at the Glasgow Apollo Chris, I'll be in touch with regards dropping a copy of for you.
  • karen fae spamhill · 1 year ago
Would you believe we used to live in Stevenson, Chris. I found it very funny that people from Glasgow actually went to Saltcoats for day trips.
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Glad to see that you managed to escape the quicksand and tell the tale Karen. If you think the Glasgow daytripppers were funny I would have you in stitches if I told you where we went a fortnights holiday when I was a nipper.

Cheers for the tape thing NG. It has been a long time since I have heard that one. And also thanks to Jimmy for putting the two amazing tracks on. I was actually out the town to day taking some snaps of some of the places that are listed for the map. Oswald street must hold the world record for road works. For the past few years there has always been something going on. The street where Mickey Oates previously was must be one of the most soulless places ever, perfectly on keeping now with that part of the clydeside. The chessboard alas, is no more.
  • Fudgie · 1 year ago
Still not worked out the gravatar thingy then N.G....hehehe

    `We are the West-End Mods`....Glasgow`s finest.!
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
NG has his gravatar there for all to see. Something to do with Honda Civic. I am keeping you all in suspense, or maybe I will decide to do without one.

Anyway, what the hell is going on up in the west end. Have they ran out of Earl Grey or something. I can sense a lot of hostility coming from there tonight.
  • Fudgie · 1 year ago
Sorry Chris i meant you not N.G....and certainly no hostility from me mate...we are all in this together.

    Glasgow Mods.
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Hi Fudgie. I know there was no hostility coming from you mate. We always have a good wee laugh with each other over the EE Mods, NG Mods, and WE Mods thing, as well as the Vespa v Lammy thing and so on. Thats it way it should be. We are all Mods after all, and that is the most important thing.
  • N.G. MODS · 1 year ago
I'm in total agreement with you there. I'm sure I said it before, most of these events happened the best part of 25 years. I don't believe anyone is trying to rewrite the Glasgow Mods history, it's just that over a period of time you remember somethings and need to be reminded of others. Everyones recollections will be different, thats just a fact of life.
  • N.G. MODS · 1 year ago
.....and as for my Gravatar lads, I would say there was no more than about 100 of these badges were made. It was a design by Glasgow Mods for Glasgow Mods, and to date the only one still in existence !! I feel very privileged to be displaying this as my Gravatar.
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
But why Civic's NG ? I know I am flouting my ignorance here, but what was the significance of that name.
  • N.G. MODS · 1 year ago
Chris I believe Charlie is going to answer this in more detail, I've got some information, but not the full picture.
  • Charlie · 1 year ago
Hi Chris the Glasgow Civics came about as it was named by Wee Rab, after the Cardonald Civic Centre ,the badge was designed by Big Jason the colours are based on Big Jasons Harlequin Hipsters, he wore at the time, crazy but true, I am sure N.G will tell us about the "Uncle Sam" incident in his own time, over to you N.G.
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Cheers for the info guys. I was probably out of the Mod scene by then, although I never stopped buying the records, and most of the clothes I wore were still very Moddish. But its also good to know about the other times, even although I was not a part of it.

I meant to ask you Charlie if Ian McLagan was in good form after the gig during the week.
  • N.G. MODS · 1 year ago
Jimmy maybe an idea to have a section on the Glasgow Civic Mods that way it keeps all the posts together.

Charlie am I right in saying the the two Govan Mod nights were Civic related ? and I believe there was also a specific Civic Mod nite in the One Up.
  • Charlie · 1 year ago
Hi Fudgie, the song you and Michelle used to your "mad dance" to was it The Main Attractions version of Brenton Woods "Gimme A Little Sign"? if it is I have it on vinyl and would be more than happy to get it recorded and uploaded to you,is that okay?
  • JimmyTheMod · 1 year ago
NG no special sections this site is all about all Glasgow Mods
  • Charlie · 1 year ago
Your right N.G about the Civics dances in Govan The Pearce Institute and The One Up specials, can't specify dates though as there was a lot going on then, a helluva lot! All good things mind you.
  • Fudgie · 1 year ago
Good evening all ,what a brilliant day it was today in Glasgow,i think it was the hottest we have had all year.right here i go again....

Charlie it was indeed `The Main Attractions`who sang the version of that song we used to dance to and i would be over the moon if you uploaded it,i lost my copy of that song and i have not heard it in years..Thank you.

Well sayed Jimmy...It`s the Glasgow Mods...not the N.G.Mods...Hehehe
  • Charlie · 1 year ago
No problem, give me a day or 2 and I will get it sent to you, cheers Fudgie
  • Fudgie · 1 year ago
Cheers Charlie,i look forward to it...your a gentleman, always thinking of others.
  • LC · 1 year ago
Is it possible to add Chris Cameron's photos from the Scene Club onto this page, I think he has two in his album on this site.
  • N.G. MODS · 1 year ago
Lammy Chick I believe that will happen in due course, it just takes time with all these things.

Ask Charlie, he's looking for the Great Society tracks haha
  • LC · 1 year ago
Cheers NG, as I actually know some of the people on Chris's photo's :-)
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Are you still in contact with anyone from the Scene Club time Lammy ? There has to be some people out there with photo's of that time.

You obviously knew Jason quite well, its a pity there is no footage of him dancing then. That would certainly rival any of that nothern style stuff eh.
  • LC · 1 year ago
Chris Ieft Scotland in 1985 and unfortunately lost touch with my mod buds. Jason lived up the road from me, but I never really knew him that well. Steve hung out with him and Helen and Jason gave him some of his mod clothes. My friend Phil was an art student during our time at the Scene Club and she did take a lot of photos during that time, but alas I have no idea where she is now :-(

I have a few photos of Steve at the time he went to the Scene Club, but none actually in the Scene Club.
  • LC · 1 year ago
I don't know if this going to work, but I have attached one of Steve's 80's photo's below.

    http://en.gravatar.com/userimage/4576419/6e729e...
  • LC · 1 year ago
69 refers - Sorry Chris i meant to say that I left Scotland in 1985 NOT you left Scotland in 1985 LOL.
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Thats a pity Lammy that you lost contact with most of the Scene Club crowd, but the same applies to myself, and I don't have the excuse of having left the country in 1985. I see some people now and then, but I don't think they will have any snaps. I have been promised by Shug Paton that he will give me a look at some of his photo's so there may be some good one's there.

You mentioned Spenny in a previous comment. I knew Spenny very well from both school and then as a Mod and even for a good while afterwards. In my photo's section it is actually Spenny's scooter that I am sitting on outside of the Star Club. It says something about the Polish Club but that is wrong.

I will certainly keep up my search for these Scene Club and early 80s Mod photo's. They are definitely out there its just a matter of someone seing this site and putting them on.
  • N.G. MODS · 1 year ago
Theres another idea for an article Chris, "The Quest For Scene Club Pictures"

The main thing is that we're starting to find out that there out there, it's just a matter of time before we source them !
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Totally agree NG. I know for definite that some of the Renfrew Mod girls took some photo's at the time, and they were not alone in that.

I shall take this on as my personal search, sort of like a Mod holy grail. I shall succeed. Well maybe, hopefully I will. So if anyone is looking in who was a Mod during the late 70s and early 80s please get in contact if you have any photo's that could show these young whippersnappers how it was done.
  • N.G. MODS · 1 year ago
Chris was it just Colin Stewart who ran the Scene Club ? who issued the membership cards etc I take it the venue was too small for a band ?
  • N.G. MODS · 1 year ago
Forgot to add, anybody know what was happening club wise Pre Scene Club in Glasgow in the 79-81 period ?
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Hi NG. Wee Colin was just the DJ, he had nothing to do with the actual running of the club.

The guy who ran the club was called Lawrie, but I am not sure if that referred to his forename or surname. There was actually a stage area that could have accommodated a band, but I never saw one play at the Scene.
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
There was certainly some Mod haunts such as the Mars bar and the Rooster before the Scene Club, but I don't think there was a specific Mod club in Glasgow NG.

I know I heard Wass and Mick Paton often talk about a club (possibly in Paisley) called The Abercorn. There was also a pub or club in Edinburgh, but I can't remember the name During the Scene Club time there was often a Mod night run by the CVS in Airdrie. But it always seemed to end in a barney between the Glasgow Mods and part of the CVS known as Section 25.

Charlie your quiet ! you've normally got a lot to say for yourself, you not got any imput on this topic ? wheres your contacts ?
  • Charlie · 1 year ago
Hi Chris was Lawrie the stocky bloke that wore a black leather jacket with a belt, polo neck sometimes, kinda greying goatee? I maybe wrong in case he was a bouncer?
  • Charlie · 1 year ago
Ahm trying to get my contacts to contact you to find out what happened to The Great Society Jukebox?lol! Car 54 where are you?
  • Fudgie · 1 year ago
I have to admit i really don`t know that much about the Scene club days,I went to the club only twice at night time along with Jackie Calder,i was only 15 so it was hard trying to get the doormen to let us in,i do remember when it was open on a Saturday afternoon,i went a few times then, there was always a large crowd of Mods standing outside. It was so awe inspiring.
I am enjoying reading all the posts regarding the Scene club,it sounded like a fantastic place to be.

    `We are the Mods`

Great tunes, I'm listening to them just now haha just need to try and work out how to post them.

The best things come to those who wait, at least I'm filling the meter with ten bobs to keep the site running.
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Good to hear that you managed to make it up to the Scene Club at least a few times Fudgie. Lots of Mods standing about outside is actually a very strong image of the place for me. When I could not yet get in due to the waiting list (poss Sept 81) I would sometimes drive down on my scooter on a Saturday night. There was always loads of people standing around outside chatting and looking cool as f...

As far as I know Charlie Lawrie was not really a bouncer. He was quite skinny, but his brother did a turn as a bouncer, and he was stockier. I do have an image of Lawrie wearing a polo neck (not a DC5 one) right enough. Another song I think we should add to the Scene Club Juke Box is 'Get offa My Cloud' by The Stones. I listened to it the other day on my ipod and it took me right back. Have we mentioned 'Too Many Fish in the Sea' already ?
  • Charlie · 1 year ago
Fudgie it was fantastic, I am glad to have been part of it,drunk most of the time mind you, I went to a party once after The Scene Club, in Castlemilk, on a Saturday, got home on Thursday, a couple of days later ended up at 3 different parties, within a 2 mile radius, one after another. No concept of time, it was brilliant music, don't know what happened to my clothes either cause someone else gave me a change of clothes, god knows what happened to the clothes I got from them either? That is all part of being a Mod, there is always someone looking after you in one way or another. All part of the buzz I guess then.
  • Charlie · 1 year ago
It maybe him as I was knee high to a grasshoppers ass, anyone over 5 foot 6 was "Giant Haystacks" from where I was looking up from, your right about "Too Many Fish In The Sea" Now there's a flashback!! Can't forget "Gloria" by Them, the thrill of turning a corner and seeing the swagger of hundreds of Mods and of course always someone with a side panel off "fixing" the scooter, our Glasgow Quadrophenia! Awe inspiring indeed!
  • Fudgie · 1 year ago
The 2 songs that stick out in my mind were `Jimmy Mack`by Martha and the Vandellas and `A Bird in the Hand`by the Velvelettes..i first heard them at The Scene Club.
I used to love going down on a Saturday night just to stand outside and hang around with all the other Mods who were too young to get in,It was on one of those nights that i first met Charlie.I only went down to look at the scooters and the clothes the other Mods were wearing, there used to be dozens of Mods every Saturday night and my only wish on those nights was to be that bit older so i could get in and be with `The In Crowd`..it`s no fun being 15.
It`s ironic because after the Scene club shut its doors,a couple of years later the Mods were back in Oswald Street hanging around Breakers pub.
  • Charlie · 1 year ago
I remember The Goldhawks S.C, from The Scene Club, never knew they were from Pollok though, Chris why don't you write an article on Glasgow Scooter Clubs, so we can maybe get everyone involved on names, get a bigger picture What does anyone else think on the subject on how many clubs were around before and after 79 onwards, we would appreciate anyones input on helping to compile a list. Lets see if we can trace photos of them. I think it would be good for others too see how large a scene it truly was!
  • steveo1 · 1 year ago
chris your right i never saw a band play at the scene club, only ever colin dj-ing.i remember those stupid pillars that got in the way when you where dancing and also the mystery of how we got our parkas back from that little cubby hole at the top of the stairs, you gave your parka in to the person inside it and got the same parka back when you left, did we get tickets for them i can't remember or was it just good luck.
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
I meant to reply to Lammy with regards to post 70 last night, but it slipped my mind. (not difficult) Lammy the photo you sent did come through, but it is too small to make out really well. The chances are that I did at least bump into both you and Stevie, we knew too many people in common not to have.

Good recall Steveo1 about those pillars. I had actually forgotten all about them. I definitely had not forgotten about getting my parka back at the end of the night though. The Mod night at The Winchester Club was quite reminscent of the Scene Club to me. I know the Scene Club was more square shaped, with more wee side rooms. But the black decor was similar, as was the wee cloakroam. At the end of the night I said to my cousin about how it reminded me of the Scene Club cloakroam, with the only difference being that the Scene Club one was absolutely full of Parkas. As far as I remember Steveo1 there was a ticket stub given out at the Scene. The only problem with me was the amount of times I lost it, but still strangely ended up with my own parka.

I also have to say that 'Gloria' by Them is another Scene Club track that was played but I had forgotten all about Charlie. One I also remembered from the other day was 'My Baby Just Cares for Me' by Nina Simone.
  • steveo1 · 1 year ago
chris thought we may have got tickets for the parkas but wasn't sure,do you remember the night they painted the seats black, with signs telling people not to sit down, and how many people in white jeans sat down,no blame claim culture then.
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
I don't actually recall the night that they painted the seats Steveo1, which is just as well. You can be 100% certain that I would have been one of the muppets that sat down with my white Levi's on.

I remember very well that they were bench type seats along the walls. I remember one night we had so much to drink that one of our crowd had to go home without even reaching the Scene. We watched him standing at that bus stop accross from the club with a bag of chips, which he could not even hold the right way up. We did somehow make it there, but I lay down on the bench next to the girls toilets and next minute the place was spinning as if I was on the waltzers. It was some carry out mind you. A gallon of shammy from the Sarry Heid, a bottle of Old English wine, and then we met two Mod girls down the clydeside who gave us two of their cans of Carlsberg.
  • steveo1 · 1 year ago
square peg carry outs and then making lager and cider snakebites down the band stand, then trying to look sober going into the scene club.normal saturday night that, unless on the scooter then total drinking ban.i had to run the gauntlet of the local plod who always gave me a producer and then searched me and the scooter, total plumvery anti mod the glesga police lol wonder why
  • N.G. MODS · 1 year ago
Just for the record, I'll take it the Scene Club was what is now Ivory Blacks / Strawberry Fields. Keeps changing its name, just trying to get my bearings.
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
The Square Peg in St Enoch's was certainly the shop of choice for most of us Steveo1. From there it was but a short journey to the Mod haunt of the Clydeside. Spot on about trying to act vaguely sober going up those flights of stairs. I must have been okay at it as I never once got knocked back. I also remember Andy Mulvie planked a half bottle of something under one of the seats during a Saturday afternoon shift, and collected it later that night. I will not say anything about some of the states (and I don't mean U.S states) I drove my scooter in. It makes me more than slightly embarrasssed now looking back.

The Scene Club was actually a bit further up Oswald Street than Ivory Blacks NG. Probably about three doors up heading towards Glasgow Central Station. It was also different in that it was not based on the ground floor. As far as I remember it was on the second floor, but I am not 100% certain on that one.
  • LC · 1 year ago
The Scene Club was defo not on the ground floor, I would agree with Chris, up one set of stairs, turn the corner then up another set of strairs, making it 2nd floor. This is why i have found it difficult to visual where it was when i'm up that way.
  • Fudgie · 1 year ago
I agree it was on the second floor.

Lammy Chick you should bring your gravatar picture back, you are a beautiful looking girl,if you don`t mind me saying.

  • LC · 1 year ago
Angie took that photo of me at the Winchester this year before the sherry set in, however she always had her camera with her in the 8t's, so i'm sure most of us will turn up in them when she get's up the attic to get them.

Angie, get up your attic NOW!, but if i'm in any, which i'm doubtful, please go through the normal vetting procedures LOL :-)

101 refers - see SS Mods did have spray paint, i think NG made a comment about that last week?
  • Fudgie · 1 year ago
I just noticed the other bit of spray paint on Steveo1`s picture...`We hate Posers`
    typical 80`s innit.

Hurry up Angie,i`m dying tae see the pictures.

  • LC · 1 year ago
Tried to put steve's photo's on twice, but the site won't allow it, at least I tried :-( Glad you like my little car, he is my pride and joy and it's better than looking at my chump.
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
You can certainly put in a request Fudgie, but historically speaking there may be a gang of chrome domes waiting at the bottom of the cliff at Ayr.
  • LC · 1 year ago
Chris I've heard that when you get to 999 you have start from the beginning again :-)
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
I have to say that the car is very cool Lammy. Paul Weller, interviewed in 1982 said that he quite fancied buying a Lambretta SX 200, and a black and white chequered mini. Personally speaking I don't think he had the legs for the latter. Okay, jacket time, but you have to allow for the late hour.
  • N.G. MODS · 1 year ago
He did own a mini Chris. He turned up a Press function for The Action in 2000 was it ? at the 100 Club. Phil Collins was also there
  • N.G. MODS · 1 year ago
Also forgot to add, he also owned an SX200 remember he was front page of Scootering about 15 years ago
  • LC · 1 year ago
My little flying biscuit tin, he never let's me down. I don't have any photo's from the 8t's, which is maybe a godsend really :-) But I found this one in the attic LOL

  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Surely he didn't give that arsehole Phil Collins a lift in his cool mini NG !

On second thoughts he would have probably come in a gas guzzler and then wrote a song about the ills of polution.
  • Fudgie · 1 year ago
    I`m seeing squares.
  • LC · 1 year ago
Phil Collins wouldn't get into my mini, no way, the little street cred I have left would be blowen out the "muddy waters"
  • N.G. MODS · 1 year ago
Hi Lammy Chick I've just approved your comments with the links to the pictures, I hope Jimmy doesn't give me into trouble for this !!! But in my defence I thought people would want to see them now as they are asking for them
  • Fudgie · 1 year ago
    Eh?...Where are they...i am a poor west-ender so i need a link...please.

    Where is the pictures?
  • N.G. MODS · 1 year ago
Not that I'm aware of. Phil Collins worked in the Marquee Club in the mid 6ts and was a big fan of The Action. He flew the band (Action) to his tax exile for a documentary video I believe he paid for.

Credit were credit is due, he stated he based his drumming style on Roger Powell The Actions drummer
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Quite right Lammy, he doesn't deserve to darken your lovely meep with his odour.

I like the photo of yourself. I take it you were a big admirer of cool chick Sandie Shaw !

    Fudgie number 119 for Steve's photo's
  • Fudgie · 1 year ago
    Cheers lads.
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Even in my most enlightened moods I would find it fairly difficult to give that little shit any credit NG. As always ( well mostly) I am in a good mood to night, so I may make an exception. On second thoughts no way Hose. He should never have been allowed to work in the Marquee either.
  • LC · 1 year ago
NG thanks, if Jimmy wants to move the photo's that's fine, it was just a bit of fun on a friday.
  • N.G. MODS · 1 year ago
I gonnae dig out ma Phil Collins article from about 10 years ago which I think was in the Guardian, and he's there with his Action CD.

Saw The Action play in the 100 Club and there was two drum kits set up, Roger Powell on one and Phil Collins on the other. Phil Collins was living the dream playing drums with his idol !!!
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Its now Saturday Lammy. You have been having so much fun that you have forgotten the time. On second thoughts (again) you more than likely posted the photies whilst it was still Friday. I think its time I called it a day. (or night) I can't keep up with you nightshift speed freeks.
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
No way NG. I will only believe it when I see it that you have kept a Phil Collins article. It may be a very long time before you hear the end of this one. I even prefer Dollar.

  • N.G. MODS · 1 year ago
I've only been there visiting other people Chris, you should be able to see that place on a clear day from your upstairs windae
  • Fudgie · 1 year ago
Low Moss has been pulled down now....tell you something eh...hahaha

Oh Phil Collins..well he`s an arse.!
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
I have to say Fudgie that I rate Carling as much as Phil Collins. I remember being out somewhere and the first prize in the raffle was a case of Carling. Second place was two cases. I do think Tennants is okay, but I don't have any.

Before you get any ideas about our house being empty I have set up a Phil Collins CD to run constantly. That will keep everyone well away. Apart from NG. You will just have to sleep in the field down the bottom of the road and listen to the 'music.'

I have nothing but great memories of the Scene Club, still got ma membership lying aboot somewhere ( some things are hard to let go of ). Lawrie was the guy who started it.What fucked it up was the fighting, mainly doon tae the EEM trying tae go at the bully. But even the aggro was good.Remember wan night Wass fightin the cunts aff up on the stage wae a fire extinguisher.

It was a sad day when it shut cos the Mod scene died on its arse efter that.
Chris a was one of those guys who hung aboot in the lassies toilet, done maist of my best work in there.

Im sure big Lawrie did the DJing before Colin so he probably covered for the wee man.
  • N.G. MODS · 1 year ago
Thanks for your imput Lambrettagp125, is it possible you can scan in your membership card for the site ? or any other Mod bits and pieces you got lying around that you can share ?

Well done Chris in smashing through the 500 mark, at least it will give the WEM something to talk about.

I'm trying to suss out my new wireless printer, Charlie I may need you to give me a hand when I lean out of the window looking for a reception haha
  • N.G. MODS · 1 year ago
Chris there doesn't seem to be a problem !
  • LC · 1 year ago
171 refers - I agree the fighting was the demise of the Scene Club and I understand the original Scene Club in Glasgow was also closed due to violence, stabbing of the bouncer. Those naughty EEM's you should hang your heads in shame. It was the norm and I must admit we expected it each week after a while, but looking back it must have been a nightmare for the organisers. Oh happy days, but now that i'm looking back, I don't know how I survived :-)
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
That sounds like you were auditioning for a part in Apollo 13 there NG Li Li!

Good to hear that you have admitted the offence of hanging about at the girls toilets LGP. Was that another one of the places that you planked your half bottles ? It was a pity about the fighting. (not just in the club) If everyone had behaved even half decently it may have lasted quite a while longer.

And I know how you survived Lammy, but I don't want to get started with that karaoke classic here Li Li !
  • lambretagp125 · 1 year ago
NG Mods I am about to start renovating my house and will look for my wee tobacco tin that I kept all my wee "bits n pieces" ( dont start singing it ) , reciepts for my first scooter out of Mickey's,suits out of Douglas Alexander and the first Globtrotters patch.
Is i before e, a should have went tae school.

Lammy Chick the mod scene in Glasgow was the Scene Club when it ended there was no were for younger Mods to go ( under 18 or at least u18 who could get in a boozer, the Star Club was kinda a place to go but I got barred so that fucked that( also got my membership card for there, nae wonder I coudnae get a job in Faslane, keep the Red Flag Flying High or is it the Championship 1 2 3 ?.
  • N.G. MODS · 1 year ago
Look forward to seeing that Lambrettagp125, don't think I ever got a receipt from any of the tailors I used !

As for the Star Club, I may have a friend who could write an article on the origins of that club, and how it was formed. I suppose that would have more to do with Glasgow social history than the Mod scene.
  • lambretagp125 · 1 year ago
It was more a hang out for the Globbies, which also contributed to the end of the Mod scene, scooter boys northern soul and other such shite.
Re reciepts for suits, made to measure out Douglas' ,deposit then pay it up.That was the way of it.Got an emerald green gaberdine about ÂŁ80. Came across it again in the back of a wardrobe in the early 90s got a fuckin fright (man it was loud, split seams n aw that shite) needless tae say the it didnae fit.If ye remember anybody running about such a suit in the Scene Club then it was probably me, no photos that a know of though.

Got ma first suit made early 1980 in Norman Slaters, a wee tailor in the penn next to C/A in the toon, felt a million dollars the day a picked it up.Trouble was I didnae know any other Mods at that time.
  • N.G. MODS · 1 year ago
Norrie Slater great wee taylor, I think he was only 54 when he passed away in the early 9ts, nothing worse than changing your taylor. I believe I may still have one of his suits in the wardrope, maybe I should scan in the Label !

I've also got a green pair of John Stewarts hipsters kicking around, god know who I could get to model them, I've got no chance of getting into them, nice to know one was skinny at one time.
  • lambretagp125 · 1 year ago
The style was what it was really all about, the scooters were class but there was no point havin a nice bike if you looked like a pound o shite when ye got off it.

Remember a shop under the Central Bridge (heilanmans umbrella) that sold quality lambs wool casuals nippy but better than some of the shite some punters were gettin out " Dees of the Gallowgate".

There was always the Briggait though, remember a lot of guy rummaging through there. Good friend of mine got a camel coat out of it and got it made into a jacket, I would say that was the only success story that I saw out of the Briggait

Spot on about the Star Club Andy. I remember the globbies had the meetings downstairs, and I also remember you having a slight disagreement with Baz over something at one of them. It was a not too bad wee place actually. During the day we could go in for a game of pool, and they let the globbies have some of their do's in the main hall.

I still have a receipt somewhere for made to measure trousers from Doogies in St Enoch Square. The clothes, the music, the people, and the scooters were definitely what it was all about to me. I could never have been a scooter boy either, as with the greatest of respect (sort of) I thought they looked crap. Recently I was reading in Scootering magazine an article about Secret Affair. Mr Page was saying that they had a sort of love/hate relationship with scooter boys, and at some gigs they turn up with t-shirt saying on them 'I'm not a Mod.' It would be good to get a t-shirt made with 'Thank f... for That' on it and stand next to one of them.

I remember the wee shop under the Jamaica bridge that sold the expensive Byfords. I could not afford one out of there at that time, but I definitely did manage a few pretty cool purchases down the Briggait.
  • N.G. MODS · 1 year ago
Chris your missing the F-ing word before Mod, it was the same at a Scooter Rally / Custom Show I went to in Edinburgh 1999, and there was about half a dozen of these idiots with these T-shirts.

I actually thought it was pretty obvious, minus the T-shirt that they weren't Mods.
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Maybe they omitted that for the magazine NG. I am not surprised that the stallholders had them. I think a lot of that mob are all beer belly and no brain. I wonder if they think for even one second that (1) People would mistake them for Mods, and (2) That Mods would want to be associated with such knuckle draggers.

I think they are better off sticking to King Kurt, Combat Rock, and The Cockney Rejects and stay away from good bands.

Now i've seen on the map where the scene club actually was i remember i was there - one time! i would have been 15 or 16 at the time and, as i was a good boy then, i drunk only coke, but i remember it as the first time i heard Harlem Shuffle and being amazed by this great music.

i also remember a do at the star club and that the wooden dance floor would bounce up and down with the dancers - which was a bit unnerving...
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Glad to hear that your memory has returned and you did indeed form part of the Scene Club legend Stevie. You may even be owed a special place in that legend for being one of the few who ventured through the front doors without the aid of a few bevs. Not that you needed drink to enjoy the Scene Club obviously, just that most people did participate on the odd glass of Port.

  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Maybe you don't realise it Mr Nobody. But farting references are totally banned on this site. The last time someone made one it caused a bit of a stink. Ok jacket time.

And I remember well shieldsy and that mob doing the paper vans. Why was John McQuillan called Dangermouse ?

Chris, I don't know why John McQuillan was called Dangermouse - enlighten me
  • mr.nobody · 1 year ago
has anyone heard of the whereabouts of the Scene Club video - the one with everyone on their scooters down the Clydeside. The last I heard Joe the guy with the goatee that used to do the door at the scene club had it - he lived in Castlemilk, I think
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
I was looking for that info from your good self. I think it was your older brother that used to call him that for some reason.
  • LC · 1 year ago
Maybe he was small but dangerous?
  • mr.nobody · 1 year ago
Probably something to do with the white jacket he used to wear. Did dangermouse ever carry an umbrella as I seem to remember John carrying one a lot
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
So far we have not managed to locate it yet Mr Nobody. I remember going out with a girl who's sister was married to one of the East End Mods. Anyway one of them had a copy then, but that was in 1985. As well as the Clydeside gathering it also featured some of the East End Mods driving down Edinburgh Road.

Well I'd better toddle off to slumberland. Sadly work awaits tomorrow.

Chris and Steve01 re: bands playing at the scene club. They did put bands on at the very early days of the scene club but I don't remember anyone showing much appreciation for them at the time.
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
That probably explains why I did not know about the bands Trina. I didn't start going up until about September 81. I had thought that I had grilled your hubby and his brother of all the Scene Club information that it was possible to gather, but they never told me about the bands playing.

When you think on it, the Scene Club crowd would have been rather difficult to say the least.

Mr Nobdy as Chris pointed out John McQuillan,Shieldsy and myself were van boys at the Times, Big Shields was best man at my wedding(drunk that day as well) met him afew year ago when he was working in a printers in Govan. As for John have not seen him in about 15yrs.
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
I remember seeing you guys down at the Times when it was based at Merchant city. I may have even got a free paper, for nothing.

I also remember you telling us about the wedding day with wee Maggie. But I won't go into that on here. Anyway, I think it was compulsory for grooms to be drunk at their wedding in the 80s, and 90s, and even now. The only difference lately is that the girls are also getting in on the act.
  • lambretagp125 · 1 year ago
There was another mod who worked in the times, He was from Garthalmock names was Sean.

Left a post about a guy who built his ain bike in Mickeys. Im sure his first name was Stevie, I think he was from Toryglen. Ring any bells, took him about a year to get the thing built so he was in Mickeys just about every day.

I have made the odd blip NG, but I thought you would have known my sense of humour by now to know I meant to say that this time. What you may call a double nagative.

I am not sure about the guy building the Lambretta,GP125. The only one I remember was the guy that rebuilt an LI 125 from scratch and Croney eventually bought it. But I did not know the guy or where he came from.

Now that there's a few more online who were Scene Club regulars maybe they could post their memories of records that were played there to add to the jukebox. Other one's I remember include 'She's not There' by The Zombies, 'Concrete and Clay' by Unit 4 plus 2, 'Friday on my Mind' by The Easybeats, (no football jokes please) and 'Paint it Black' by The Stones.

So let us know what tracks you remember Mick, Trina, Stevie, and Andy.

Chris are you going to add the only two Scene Club photo's, in your folder, onto this article?
  • JimmyTheMod · 1 year ago
hope that's the 2 photos your referring too ?
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Hi Lammy. How's that for service from Jimmy.

If you look at the photo section Jimmy has also added a couple of my early 80s photo's to the one's that I previously had on. I am sure you may recognise the the two girls. One is Jean from Dennistoun, and the other is Jackie Shea from the East End. I am not sure if she is the Jackie you were referring to the other night.

And cheers for that once again Jimmy.

  • Chris C · 1 year ago
That sounds sore NG. I see what they do to dog's with that docking thing.
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Maybe it was because Paddy was wearing a Rangers scarf Lammy. Football is not allowed on the site Li Li !

Did you see the photo's with the two girls in them at the end of my photo's ?
  • LC · 1 year ago
Chris I seen your photo's, I didn't recognise the girls in your photo's, but i will need to have another look. But I do recognise you now, I thought you were the guy with the Red Hair, that's why I never recognised you before.
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
That's a pity Lammy. Angie the Mod went about with Jean, who is pictured with me. And Jackie Shea came from Shettleston I think. She was definitely a regular attendar at both the Lindella and the Scene Club.

I was fairly sure that I would have known you. All I need now is to see a photo of you from that time.
  • JimmyTheMod · 1 year ago
I thought it was kilmarnock chris hahahahhaha all three added now
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Nice one Jimmy. It may have been Kilmarnock, but Paddy was the only guy called Paddy that I have known who was a Rangers fan. In reality his name was not Patrick, so I don't know, or remember where the Paddy bit came from. Maybe Lammy will remember.

One time we were sitting at the bandstand and Paddy's dad came up in his van with Paddy inside. He asked if I wanted to earn a few quid. I did say yes indeed, but only if it did not involve dead bodies. His dad worked at a funeral parlour !
  • LC · 1 year ago
Jimmy thanks for putting the photo on for me. Chris you ask why Paddy from Castlemilk was known as Paddy, I went to school with him and he was always know as Paddy, however his name was John MacNamara, I may be wrong with the surname, but it was defo a Mac, which may be the Irish connection. The Jackie I was referring to was from Castlemilk.
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Thanks for jogging the memory of Paddy's name there Lammy. He was a good guy and I really liked him. I was not sure about the colour of his Vespa 90 or 100, but thats another matter.

Love the new gravatar Lammy, very cool and sophisticated Mod look.
  • LC · 1 year ago
LiLi I think Paddy had a diffrent scooter everyday of the week. I mind we all we went to Blackpool, me, Terry, Rab Souter, Elaine Burns, Paddy and A N Other. I think he had a few scooters, one I recall being orange? Anyway Paddy's scooter was knacked and he took my PX, which I jumped on the back of. Terrifying or what and how many horties did he get, plenty, and Rob's crash in the dark was a memory I will never forget. It was event after event, but that's another story. Lets say me and Terry got the bus back.

The Gavatar, funny you should mention it, she, IMO, the modernist of her time, but i'm going to add something on Janny's article about Lulu, as this lady has a connection.
  • Trina · 1 year ago
Hi Chris, I have been having a wee think about some of the records played at the Scene Club and apart from the ones already mentioned I remember Dave Clarke 5 - Catch Us if You Can, Glad All Over which usually prompted a lot of foot stomping at the chorus, Rolling Stones - Get Off of My Cloud, Safaris - Wipe Out, Spencer Davis Group - Somebody Help Me and the McCoys - Hang on Sloopy.
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
It's funny how certain records from that time stick in the mind Trina. I well remember The Stones one, The Safaris, and The Spencer Davis one, but not so much the DC5. That has in reality probably more to do with the fact that I was never a fan of them, so I did not take their records in. Janny was talking about teaching her son Sha La La La Lee. I remember wee Ann Paton always singing 'Hang on Sloopy' when she was about 2.

The first time I saw Paddy he had this horendous brown coloured Vespa 90 or 100 Lammy. Blackpool was a place I never went to as a Mod. I remember the guys talking about Blackpool September 1980. There was a bit of a fight with some skins and Chaz threw one of them through a window, which was quite nice of him really. And the talk of those horties brings back memorys of paying a small fortune in fines; money that I could ill afford.
  • Trina · 1 year ago
I think I remember Ann singing that. She was such a cute wean - we took her down the barras a couple of times and everybody used to give her money. No that we went halfers wae her or anything!!!
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Knowing Mick he would have bought wee Ann a candy floss and then bought a half bottle of vodka with the rest Trina . But you are right, she was a cute, good natured wee girl.

Another record that I remember from the Scene Club was 'Bread and Butter' by The Newbeats. In fact, I think I also have that record up in the loft. If we keep going like this we could make a Glasgow Scene Club CD.
  • steveo1 · 1 year ago
chris, paddy had loads of scooters,he had a red primmy when i met him,and i had a red 90,loads of fun swapping number plates to get through mots, lucky the local mechanic didn't know where engine and frame numbers where on vespas.also remember the locomotion by little eva being played at the scene club.
  • STING · 1 year ago
"Bread and butter" Newbeats great track but what was there number 1?
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Well remembered about 'The Locomotion' Steveo1. Its funny how one record can jog memory of another as I just remembered 'My Boy Lollipop' by Millie.

The brown scooter that Paddy had (about October 81) could have been a Vespa 90, 100, or even a Primavera, I'm sure you must remember it. I did not know him then. I was outside the Scene Club one night, just talking as usual, and Paddy and two or three other guys pulled up on their scooters. One of them may even have been you. But what stuck in my mind was the colour of that scooter.
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
You've got me there Sting. The only other Newbeats track that I know is 'Run Baby Run.'
  • STING · 1 year ago
"ye thats it I liked that one"
  • steveo1 · 1 year ago
haha the brown scooter was a 90,we eventually sprayed it all sorts of colours and a bloke called steph miller rode it about,it actually looked all right if you squinted at it with the sun in your eyes.i,ve sent jimmy another of my old photos from then, not brilliant quality but you can just make out the globbie helmet.my boy lollipop LiLi
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Its a great song. I first came across it when I started to get into northern soul in 1983.

The time I saw you guys, plus Paddy on his brown machine was a Saturday night, so no chance of it looking good in the sun. I was sure it was a Vespa 90, because I had one myself. They had the most remarkable engines ever. I could leave mine lying in a room in the winter for weeks, and it would still kick start first time everytime. I hope you gave him the stick he deserved for that scooter.
  • N.G. MODS · 1 year ago
Don't think I have ever saw a brown scooter, don't know if I want to either !

I did however own a rusty brown colour Vauxhall Chevet haha
  • steveo1 · 1 year ago
paddy had the skin of an elephant,no matter what you said,he just laughed it off,but we still gave him stick.your right about the vespa 90,brilliant scooters mine ran brilliant and apart from one throttle cable it never gave me any problems, took me to scarbourgh and back in 81 and never missed a beat, still regret selling it to this day.
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Believe me NG, you don't want to see one.

Its funny how you say that Steveo1. I sold my 90 to a mate when I got my 150 Super. He let it go to rack and ruin, and it lay at the bottom of his flats untouched for about six months in all the winter weather. Even after all that it still started on the second kick, so I am not in the least surprised that you reached Scarborough on one. When I was on mine I could do a steady 50 mph from here to anywhere without a hint of a problem. I also regretted selling mine.
  • steveo1 · 1 year ago
if only we had known then what we know now,i'm a lammy man now but still get the inclination for another vespa, but the prices for even 90's is shocking, however there are bargains still out there.
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Since it is late at night and few people are looking in I will admit that I always thought that Lambrettas looked unbelievably brilliant. Its just a pity they did not have Vespa engines. I also have to say that classic Vespa's look every bit as good as Lammy's.
  • steveo1 · 1 year ago
the only vespas i didn't really like where the cosa's,the engine was alright but i didn't really take to the shape, don't know why really.
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
I'm struggling here to remember a Cosa Steveo1. I remember most including 90 Racers, Primavera's. 125 and 150 Supers, 180 and 200 Rally's, and SS 180's. Obviously I remember the perfect Mod machine the GS, but the Cosa I don't remember.

I will also say that along with the GS I would consider the GT 200 to be my perfect Mod version of a scooter.
  • LC · 1 year ago
Chris I have added a picture of a Cosa, as Steve is busy at the moment.

    http://photos-c.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sf2p/...
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Cheers for that Lammy. I have seen one before, but I now know why I had forgotten all about them. It is like a bad version of the Vespa PK, and I didn't think they could get any worse than that.

For anyone looking in who had and liked either a PK or a Cosa I am sorry. But no one made you buy it.

being a regular at scene club attending scooter rallies for over 20 years home and abroad, driving from glasgow to milan and taking furthest travelled and my scooter taking many prizes i cannot beleive the amount of people who have came out of the woodwork who have not got a scooter between them it will probably get back to normal soon and the born agains will go back to watching eastenders ect.ect.

  • Chris C · 1 year ago
First of all I have to say welcome on board whoru. If you were a Scene Club regular I would possibly know you, but obviously without knowing your name I cannot say.

I also have to say that for your first post it is very negative. A lot of people (like myelf) never really gave up listening to the great music favoured by Mods. But despite that the last time I went to a rally was 1986. After that last one in Morecambe I swore that I would never attend a national rally again. I would think about a Mod event, but I would not touch a national with a barge pole. We have discussed this a wee bit before, and most agree that having a scooter was the least important factor to being a Mod. In my time I had two, but the clothes, and the music were definitely more important.

On a lighter note I hope everyone likes my grav. It is dedicated to all the Mods who are no longer with us, but especially to the Sighthill Glory Boys, Big Doc and Johnny Wallace, who were probably involved in the original Mod grafitti that all Mods on our side of the water were so familiar with.
  • stevie fae cranhill · 1 year ago
'i was a mod before you was a mod'

i'm not sure it really matters what a mod has between their legs - and i personally don't even watch Eastenders - Chris C obviously prefers Coronation Street.
  • N.G. MODS · 1 year ago
Well said Chris. A Mod was a Mod, the love of music and style out weighted everything else going. I think Ian Page summed it up greatly in 79 by saying "ok this song is for Mods everywhere" !
  • N.G. MODS · 1 year ago
Chris, its such a pity your Gravatar wasn't a picture of the old grafitti that was on Baird Street at the old footpath ! I suppose we have to leave something for the imagination for the viewers.

The NG Mods were well represented in Glasgow and still are.

    WE ARE THE MODS
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
I hope a wee bit of constructive criticism will not put you off from posting more comments whuru. You are entitled to your opinion on any matter, even if I do not particularly agree with it in this instance. Also, i'm a bit nosey to find out if I knew you from the Scene Club.

Glad someone appreciates my grav NG. I suppose unless you came from the north of the city it would not have any real significance. The amount of times I passed that wall with the original grafitti on the way into the town was incredible, and I always meant to take a photo of it. Like so many things I didn't and before we knew it the building was away.

And I have to point out that you are correct Stevie, and I am more of a street person than an Eastenders one, and no it has nothing to do with the name. But apart from those two and River City, Neighbours, Home and Away, Brookside, and Thomas the Tank Engine I don't really watch soaps. And since we are on the subject did anyone ever see 'No Angels' when it was on. Beauiful nurses and an amazing soul soundtrack to go with it, what more could you ask for.
  • whoru · 1 year ago
First may I say thanks to Chris for the welcome - you always were one of the nice guys. As for the comments about mods and scooters not being that connected - I BEG TO DIFFER - If any of you has read the 'Mod's Book' then you will see it as the bible and as the bible tells you every mod - from the poorest back street mods to the middle class jewish boys all made it their first priority to get a scooter. Without one you were no-one. Nowadays all you seem to need to be a mod is a german parker, some jam badges and a liking for Secret Affair. Caio for now.
  • stevie fae cranhill · 1 year ago
Welcome again whoru - i happen to have scooter (and i never watch Eastenders), but i cant agree that anyone who doesn't have a scooter isn't a real mod. Everybody has to start somewhere - even if it's with a german parka and some Jam badges - in old days the other mods would usually put you straight. When i first ventured up the Bandstand Tam Gow told me i was a plastic Mod - then he told me what i should be wearing - i wasn't put off - it felt great just to be there and talking to other guys who shared the same interests. The main thing for me was always the music, then the style - i did get a scooter back then as well but i didn't keep it very long.

Anyway, Keep the Faith - it's good to have your opinions on board.
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Cheers for the endorsement whoru. But you now have me wondering who you are ! I did say that I thought I would have known you.

It is actually good to sometimes hear views that don't particularly correspond with my own. When I was first into the Mod scene in the end of 1980 I made it one of my main priorites to get a scooter. And by the Spring of the following year I was the proud owner of a nice wee Vespa 90 bought from Mickey Oates. I kept that until the end of 82 when I bought a 150 Super. I spent a lot of money trying to do it up, and I did get it looking good, but It was eating up too much money as a project and I decided then that I was going to be a scooterless Mod, and concentrate on the clothes and records. I did miss not having a scooter, but I did not for one moment feel any less of a Mod for not having one. In fact, the money I saved by not getting fines all the time for taking people on the back let me build up a decent selection of classic Mod discs.

Apart from Scooters Whoru, I knew a few Mods at The Scene Club who drove
Mini Coopers, "Pychedelic Mick" was one of them, one of the coolest Mods
I ever seen at The Scene. A Paul Weller "MINI me" literally his image. I don't do
Mod following myself, I do cool, LI,LI Whoru, I started off as a Plastic Mod myself, I was 14 and looking for a direction, but before being a Mod I was
into all things, anything that was about the 60's, the fun, the dancing, music
clothes and fashion. The cars as well as the Scooters. Bonds Aston Martin.

Can't forget the E-Type Jag,and off course the mini, cars not skirts.....on
second thoughts oh aye, the woman, can't forget them, eh? I think an Aston Martin would get you a girls phone number quicker than a Scooter in December
Whoru, lol. Anyway thanks for for your opinions, if you have any photos you
would share with us, send them to admin@glasgowmods.co.uk,we woud love to see them Take care.

    WE ARE THE MODS
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
I see you are still not coming forward with any clues to your identity whoru. Another person of mystery like Mr Nobody before I twigged it was Mick.

The final thing I want to say on this matter, and it is more of a question to start off with. Is did you feel comfortable going to national scooter rally's as a Mod after, say the middle of 1983? At two successive rallies; Dumbar June 83, and Scarborough August 83 I became involved in slanging matches with the combats and doc martin brigade that had then taken over. I personally did not feel comfortable going to the rally's as a Mod then, in fact it felt like we were outsiders. The last straw came in Morecambe 86. I was not a Mod by then but the sight of hundreds of skins giving it the right hand salute at the Sunday night do was more than enough to end my four year stint at going to national rally's. I have never been back since.

And to Charlie. Its funny but I was just thinking about the Scene Club the other night and I remembered Mick fae Craigend. We all went to The Jam's last Apollo gig together in November 82.
  • Charlie · 1 year ago
I last heard Mick was working for Scotrail about a just over a year ago now
Chris, he is still around in the background somewhere. the Rallies have changed
a lot now Chris, I think you would enjoy them a lot better now, if your up for one
next year, give me a shout, it will be fun, guaranteed.
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
The last time I spoke to Mick was probably around the early 90s when I met in in The Griffin bar Charlie. He had long hair and admitted that he was now into more 'heavy' music. Suffice to say I gave him a real bit of good natured stick, and asked what had become of the cool guy that we knew in the early 80s.

I don't know if I would ever venture on to a national again mate. No disrespect meant to people with different outlooks than myself, but I just do not have anything in common with scooterists, scooter boys etc. Apart from some of the music obviously. I can't even say with all honesty that I have any time for what most feel goes for a scooter. But then I am very traditional in my scooter tastes.

Chris what your saying was typical thoughts of many Mods at the time, this is what led to the National Mod Rallies being created by The Phoenix List, which was a weekly Mod newspaper. Scooters being stolen, the very people who were your pals the week before as Mods, as they were still slagging you off, "you still a Mod" many times have I heard that one.

As I said in an earlier post, better times were around the corner, don't want to go into it too much, I'll leave that for a future article. Your sentiments and recollections are spot on though.
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
As far as I am concerned NG there was definitely a reaction against Mods at national rallies after the middle of 83. It was weird how it happened so quickly too. When we went to Scarborough in 82 just about everyone was a Mod. I remember seeing one guy on an Arthur Francis with a leather jacket on, and thinking that if he went about like that in Glasgow at that time he would have got a severe pounding. A year and a bit on at the same venue I was getting stick from some old (well late 20s) farts in combats and docs for wearing Mod gear. I did not let them hassle me too much it has to be said, and told them exactly what I thought of them.

Although I was not around as a Mod then, I can imagine the starting of the Mod only rallies being a good idea against some of the complete arseholes that were appearing on the nationals. Two words 'King' and 'Kurt' spring to mind to descibe how fuckin low that nationals got.
  • LC · 1 year ago
Chris, we do not tend to go to Scooter Rallies, as we would rather spend our cash on the many Mod Do's we attend each year. We go to at least one Scooter Rally a year, generally IOW, but I can honestly say that we have never really had any problems, just the odd look and comments about "Quadrophenia", but we have never really encountered any bad feelings or malice, we are all a bit older and wiser. Our yearly Scooter do this year is Morecombe in Nov, it's good for scooter spares and digging through the DVD and CD sections, to see if we can pick anything up. You should get yourself up to Friday Street, it's local to you and there are usually a few modded up, so you would not feel out of place and they play a good selection of Classic R&B.
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Yeah I see in some of the magazines there are a lot of do's on that look really good Lammy . I would certainly attend some of the Mod do's around but, as you may have noticed, I do not really have much time for the national scooter rallies. It does sound quite good for buying some CD's and stuff but I don't think I would ever go to one for a weekend again. I am not meaning to be elitist, but I got into it all in the first place as a Mod. I was not interested in scooter boys or any of that stuff then, and it is still not my thing. Some of the soul music at rallies was good, but some of the other stuff they used to play was just plain bullshit.

I do quite like the sound of Friday Street, as long as I go down when they have finished the JLL stuff.

i was never a plastic mod with my brother driving a tv175 in the 60s and a member of the shamrock scooter gang for any of you who dont know the shamrock was a gang who come from the garngad area of the city .now back to charlie the only people who drove e types and jenson intercepters were gangsters at the top of their game not by any mods and any mods who had taken up driving cars had stoped being mods by that time - you dont see in the mods book young mods sitting posing in mini coopers.
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
If you are from the 'good n bad' whoru I will definitely know you. I also attended the big rock (sometimes) so I will know you, its just a matter of figuring it out.
  • whoru · 1 year ago
I think you do, Chris but why do you need to figure it out I prefer it this way - lot's more fun :)
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Its just this mind of mine whoru, like a prime Vespa it just keeps ticking over. The last mystery man was another garngad Mod, and I did figure out it was Mick Paton eventually. Somewhere in the back of my mind I have a wee recollection of someone who had an older brother who was a mod in the 60s. But I will keep quiet about my thoughts.
  • whoru · 1 year ago
I dont think charlie is going to comment on the cars you see over the years people put there own slant on mod there isnt a any room for deviatoin you stick to the mods book or you end up like some psychadelic acid taking hippie , living off the social and whishing your were tom jones, driving a vespa 50 with people throwing nickers at you as you drive down argyle st in to the sunset
  • LC · 1 year ago
I tell you what, you know when your getting old, when you hear the same old tunes about what is a mod and what is not Mod again :-( boriiiiiiiiiiiing! It's good that people have a different point of view about Mod, I can only assume that it must be based on their experiences or the Richard Barnes book, but the Richard Barnes book was London based and not every city had the same experiences and disposable income to buy scooters. Just keep the faith and enjoy the way of life however you wish :-) Is Eastenders on on a Tuesday?
  • Fudgie · 1 year ago
Aye Eastenders is on the now...then River City.....I lead a boaring life.,Li.Li

Excellent answer Lammy Chick....WE ARE THE GLASGOW MODS..!!!
  • stevie fae cranhill · 1 year ago
thank god you said it Lammy - i think this talk of sticking strictly to the 'bible' sounds a bit like fundamentalism!
  • whoru · 1 year ago
well lammy chick maybe we should have a glasgow mods book and see who gets in it or should we have it pre-83? Sorry if i touched a nerve there as you requested I've gone out of my way to include a full listing of eastenders for your viewing pleasure - Monday, Tuesday Thursday Friday and you can watch it all over again on Sunday. There now you won't miss a beat now
  • steveo1 · 1 year ago
whoru-wohoo another scooter riding mod like myself,i've got to say don't really agree that people aren't mods if they don't have a scooter,i'm lucky i've always had the money to buy scooters but some people don't,and it takes more than a scooter to make you a mod(look at jamie oliver lol)i've had these discussions about what is mod with loads of people since 1979 and no one has ever given me a definitive answer, not even richard barnes who i spoke to in 2005. On the subject of cuppini, ken cobbing, nanucci racks ,bars, seats etc that sounds like a great subject for an article and discussion, looking forward to reading it when you post it.
  • steveo1 · 1 year ago
    Your a gent thanks :-)
  • Fudgie · 1 year ago
Eastenders is shegite mate...We love River City..!!!

and i was a mod after 83 so can i be in your book?
  • LC · 1 year ago
commnet 278 was my thanks to Whoru, not from Steveo1. I would love to contribute to your Glasgow Mod book Whoru, but I can only go back to 81 in the Scene Club if that is ok, can you go back a bit further? I could also do a bit on current Mod Scene if you want to bring it up to date? I've missed Eastenders now :-(
  • Fudgie · 1 year ago
Lammy Chick you never missed much...and remember it`s on at 10 again on bbc3 or bbc4.

I was a mod from 81 to around 89.....bring on the book.!!!

    By the way....Who are you?....Li.Li
  • LC · 1 year ago
Sorry meant to say, nice to see you on the site Whoru, keep postin, we don't all have the same opinions, but that's what makes it more interesting?
  • whoru · 1 year ago
i only use starline range of accessories made by super as they are the connoisseurs choice as for cuppini would not touch them and your spot on fudgie is it you wouldnt get in the book next.
  • stevie fae cranhill · 1 year ago
Unfortunately we don't have a Glasgow Mods book but we do have the Glasgow Mods website (thanks to Jimmy) and the fact that it's the only Mods website, as far i know, that is specific to one city must say a lot about the Glasgow Mods - and anyone who wants to be is in it!

My copy of the Mods 'bible' fell to pieces years ago but maybe 'whoru' will help us write a new testament for those who weren't fortunate enough to be there before '83...
  • whoru · 1 year ago
i post a copy plenty spare mod books just post yer name and address i get one 2 u
  • Fudgie · 1 year ago
Why would i not get in the book then?...can you be a bit more specific whoru?

I`m heartbroken...a Glasgow Mods book without wee Fudgie.!!!

can i hit you with my dummy?
  • whoru · 1 year ago
The 'One Up' doesn't count as a Mod Club - it was the scooterists who drank there first an the wee mods followed when the rain fell on the bandstand and Livyy led them there
  • Fudgie · 1 year ago
Bollocks mate....The one-up was NEVER a scooterist place...and Livi never lead us anywhere....the one-up was a Mod place.
  • whoru · 1 year ago
Bull - the One Up was run by an auld guy who widny know a mod fae a teddy bear. A think a caught yer dummy there does diddums want it back
  • Fudgie · 1 year ago
Aye a want it back....remember and clean it first.!!!
  • Charlie · 1 year ago
Actually Whoru, it was me and Jimmy that found the One Up, the Scooterist followed us more like, dunno about the Mods book being the bible, "Quadophenia" would fit into that category better, either the 74 edition or
    the movie.
  • Fudgie · 1 year ago
Quadrophenia was ALWAYS my bible...the Mods book was crap.!!!

whoru...i think you have always been a scooter boy...either that or an arse.!

`We are the Glasgow Mods`...and we loved the one-up..!!!
  • whoru · 1 year ago

  • Fudgie · 1 year ago

  • LC · 1 year ago
Fudgie, I would include you in my book, "The life and times of a wee Glesga Mod, Fudgie". I never went to the One Up, but i'm all for anywhere that kept the scene alive. Whoru, what type of scooter do you have, were you lucky enough to have your brothers TV175?
  • Charlie · 1 year ago
Actually it was owned by the Butcher downstairs Jimmy Blaikey, and it was a Mod Club, diddums forgives you because there isn't room for two in my Modded up pram, comlplete with back rack and extended pram forks, do want a ""backie""? Li, Li!!

  • JimmyTheMod · 1 year ago
I was there before 83 summer of 80, when a bumped into charlie. As far as the one up goes it was the best of it's time, as it was the first time we all came together as mods and it wasn't about where you came from, the mod scene in glasgow lasted well into the late 80's as a result of the hard work of the lads of what you refer too as 83 onwards.... we were organised, had fun and above all is the reason why the website is now here, that's the period I remember fondly as there was no infighting..... I remember two twins running around glasgow in early 80's selling knock off gear as 60's original AS STATED in the MODS book, PRICELESS..... The scene club lasted 2 years max, the one up went on for 4 to 5 years, the scooter boys came around cause we had it sorted on the bands and music that was played..... I think WHORU is the ace face with the HONDA C90 GS scooter hahahahaha PEACE ..... Speccy Rectum
  • whoru · 1 year ago
Charlie you just stick to collecting them knickers
  • Fudgie · 1 year ago
Why is the clock ticking?....are you talking tae me???

Take the batteries oot and gies another chance?

    Now what was the question?
  • stevie fae cranhill · 1 year ago
i know that Fudgie organised quite a few do's and ran a mods magazine - so i would have thought he might get a mention in the Glasgow Mods book - but as we haven't identified 'whoru' yet i'm not sure about his chapter...give us a clue, whoru?
  • LC · 1 year ago
Do you mean the scooter that goes over the cliff or the ones which have fur around the headlights to disguise that they are later models, ridden by the extras???
  • Fudgie · 1 year ago
    HE is ex....scooter boy....NEVER A MOD
  • mr..nobody · 1 year ago
Whoru, I'm surprised your auld pal Chris didnae guess who you were. I knew who it was right away. Hope you are both well

Charlie, we founded the one up around late 82 if my memory serves me .. We converted it from a wagon wheels breakfast club into a mod boozer....

A Royston bath is that a deep kitchen sink with 4 weans in it standing on top of the dishes??? Mind you our Basin can hold about 600 people in it, mostly the Partick Thistle Supporters Club, drowning their sorrows after being beaten, again!!
  • mr..nobody · 1 year ago
no the dishes were always done before the weans went in and there wis more than 4 weans to a bath in ma hoose
  • Fudgie · 1 year ago
I had one of they sinks...there was 7 of us.....KEEP IT GLASGOW.....`We are Family`....now where the fecks the soap???
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Some fandaby posts here to night. Its just a pity I was busy doing packing and such garbage to contribute. But I have to say this Mik, I did indeed guess who the mystery person was, and no it was not Rosemary the telephone operator from Hong Kong Phooey. But just as with yourself I did not want to reveal all to the world. I had heard before that Andy had a brother who was a Mod in the 60s so I guessed after that.

Anyway, how's life in the outback ? And to Andy, how much did you charge people to let them sit on your scooter on the day of the run out ? Its a lovely scooter it has to be said, but how has it lasted in the Garngad this long without being half inched
  • Charlie · 1 year ago
You had the same childhood experiences as me then Mr.N? Did your Sink have one of those big Manglers attached to the side for the clothes? How people take washing machines for granted nowadays,eh? That was the late 60's that I recall, how about you?
  • Fudgie · 1 year ago
Well did you catch a didgeridoo?....sport.!!!
  • whoru · 1 year ago
i always new charlie when i was in maryhill a lot of the weans prams had venetian blinds on them
  • mr..nobody · 1 year ago
life in the outback is good but we've nae water and I don't think Scottish Water can find us to get it sorted, so we won't be bathing in the sink tonight. I was on a scooter a few weeks ago the first time in about 2 years, it was my old one that I sold to a mate years ago
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
And I also meant to say that Li stands for 'Laugh Internally.' It makes more sense than Laugh out Loud. If you did that after every funny comment people would think the person doing it was gaga.

    HAHAHA
  • stevie fae cranhill · 1 year ago
Chris C - i see it's your mates trying to raise a storm in a tea cup - NG Mods started the fight!

Of course it's great to have them - and very enjoyable to read the banter!

Haven't you been 'moving house' for about a month now? Sure the missus hasn't grounded you from the PC recently?
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
The last time I was on one was about 1986. If I was still there when Andy came down to the run out in June I'm sure he would have let me get a photo on his SX (for a small fee) Anyway I'll bet you enjoyed being on the road again Mik. On a slightly strange note, what is the world coming to when all these mad people have now got full licenses. Next I'll find out that John McGowan got one. Years ago no one bothered with such nonsense, but now everyone has all gone legit.
  • Charlie · 1 year ago
We were spoiled, racing stripes on the Auld Churchill prams, now known as a "Smart Car" an engine and a roof, voila!! I knew Whoru when I was in Royston, his pram had bars on it!! Poser!
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Stevie it feels like I have been moving now for about a year, it is a complete pain and I can't wait for it to be over with.

It used to be the EE Mods who held the world record (three in a row) for starting a fight in an empty house. I'll bet Andy or Mik have been in the company of an Eastender recently and the trouble making vibes have rubbed off Li Li !
  • Fudgie · 1 year ago
He has been moving house for over 3 month??....anyway...i coulnny gie a monkeys about people joining this site, but a canny stand the jokers who come on to take the pisss or try to score points...WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER.....`WE ARE THE GLASGOW MODS`

and a glesga mods book without wee Fudgie??....well i never....IT IS A FAKE...!!!!
  • mr..nobody · 1 year ago
I've had my full license for about 13 or 14 years now - auld age does funny things to you. Wass is up here on holiday just now, I was going to post some pictures of his Lammy on the site
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
If you see him tell him to come down to the Heilan Jessie on Sunday afternoon for a few beers Andy, and tell not to borrow any of Shug's made to measure strides if he is thinking of doing any more motorcycle stunts. I also heard that Wass has a full license, and that is a definite sign that the world has gone crazy
  • whoru · 1 year ago
chris r u taking your bath with u when u move you could post on here there are still people having get a scrub in the basin like a freeshare system only for mods
  • mr..nobody · 1 year ago
no the world hasn't gone that crazy yet. He will need to sit his CBT again. He bought a PX with the disc brake 7 years ago and it's only got 179 miles on it and I done them when I was down visiting. If you want to see a picture of him go into the Specials Scooter Club site there is a photo of him, drunk as usual - some things never change
  • mr..nobody · 1 year ago
Chris, meant to say Wass is going home on Sunday
  • mr..nobody · 1 year ago
Whoru - at least they've got water to have a scrub wi. we've had nae water all night
  • Fudgie · 1 year ago
Go on then....gies a link...i wanna see the pictures.....Your Move.
  • mr..nobody · 1 year ago
    what pictures Fudgie?
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
I'v got so much f......boxes everywhere Andy that it would not surprise me in the least if the bath was in one. Next doors cat is probably in one too. I may consider hiring my bath out to Mods who find themselves without one, or without water, like some poor souls. But I would have to find it first amongst all the clutter. It was never as complex as this in Sighthill. We usually moved out at midnight and all the stuff was put on a few prams.
  • mr..nobody · 1 year ago
whit youse hid prams in Sighthill - we had a barra for our moonlight flittings then went back and stole the front door efter we moved out cause it was a better one than the one at the new hoose
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
I will have a wee look on the Specials site Andy. I have not seen Wass for about 15 years. The time when he ruined wee Shug's trousers must be one of the funniest things I have seen in my life, after we checked he was still actually alive.
  • mr..nobody · 1 year ago
Chris why do you keep calling me Andy
  • Fudgie · 1 year ago
Last i know Wass was staying in Scotstoun/Whiteinch.....and it WAS the same person....7 year ago.
  • Fudgie · 1 year ago
    Andy how ya doin mate.....hahaha...Li..Li.
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Yes, we were all a bit snobby in Sighthill you'll recall Andy. You had to have at least 125 points to get in, but 140 to get out again. The good thing about it I have to say was that there were a lot of Mods around, and they all had scooters. It was always a bit awkward trying to listen out for some arsehole trying to nick it when you stayed 17 up.
  • mr..nobody · 1 year ago
Chris are you talking about the time he was going to batter the guy on the bike and the guy drove away. Wass grabbed onto the back of the bike and got dragged along the street and took the knees oot of Shugie's new troosers (in oor hoose it was first up best dressed). I wasn't there but saw the troosers later when he came into the Scene Club
  • mr..nobody · 1 year ago
Fudgie it's a different Wass. The one we are talking about is my brother and he has lived in London for the 18-19 years
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Sorry Mik.Its late at night and I have been boxing this stuff since early this morning, I'm getting mixed up with my Nobodys and whoru's. I feel more alert when I am drunk.

  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Yes it is probably the same time Mik, altough I'm sure it was after the club had came out. We were all standing outside, as usual in the hundreds when about a dozen bikes went past at speed shouting things at everyone. Sadly for them the lights were at red, and everyone ran after them. Suffice to say they jumped the lights and that was when most people gave up the chase. Apart from mad Wass who leaped and held the back rack of a big bike, which then dragged him up the road. We ran up and saw him let go of the bike and meet the earth at top speed. After seeing he was alright I saw Shugs strides looking like something out of Robinson Crusoe. I think Wass turned round and said something like 'do you think he'll notice.' I remember being in your house a couple of days later and Shug was looking for his trousers, I had to go into the toilet so I could laugh.
  • stevie fae cranhill · 1 year ago
Yeah - It would be easier if these Mr Whoru-Nobodies would use their real names

    - but i think think mr whoru has got his nose stuck in that bible again:

'though shalt not put any false Gods before that of the Li'
  • mr..nobody · 1 year ago
Chris were you in our hoose the time I was lying in ma bed oot ma face and Wass was setting my feet on fire, sticking matches between my toes and lighting them. They told wee Gowny to do it and I woke up and punched him then immediately fell back to sleep

  • Chris C · 1 year ago
I was in the Scene Club totally unaware of what Wass was up to on my scooter when he kindly showed it off to the smelly one's Mik, so the motorbike incident wins it by a mile for being funny. Shug told me later that he found the trousers down the back of the wardrobe. If I had been there when he saw them I think that would have been even funnier.

Don't worry about Jimmy seeing this stuff Stevie. Just don't say anything, and if he does see it we'll just say it was all dummy fighting Li Li ! Mods never fought each other for real in Glasgow. Apart from when Shug found out about his trousers that were now shorts.

Chris, Wass is still as daft. He's the only guy I know that gives his son a showing up. He is still doing the same daft carry on, about 4 years ago at a scooter rally he unplugged the amp because he didn't like the music. He got chucked out so he went away and got changed and sneaked back in

I am sorry to say that I was absent the time that Gowny tried to set you on fire Mik. I have to say that if he had tried to set me on fire I would have done the same as you, and then ran into the kitchen for a bucket of water. I don't know how your parents put up with us lot all being in your house at the one time, it must have been some racket, as well as being a bit harsh on the tea bag front.
  • whoru · 1 year ago
anyway goin ta my bed but did enjoy the patter see ye later.

One of the funniest things I ever saw was when Rab Cunningham got lifted at St Enoch Sq one Saturday afternoon. They had him in the back of the Police van and Eddie wanted to charge the van. He went charging across the carpark after the van only to find out, when he turned round, that he was on his own. Everybody else stayed where they were pissing themselves laughing
  • mr..nobody · 1 year ago
I'm off to my kip as well.
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
I don't know why Mik, but somehow I am not overly surprised to hear that Wass is still nuts. Anyone who thinks he can stop a 500 cc bike by attempting to drag it back has got to be mad. I'm just glad he was not on my scooter again when he tried it.

I also agree with taking the amp out if there is a rubbish band on. Wass wasn't in Manchester in May was he ? Li Li

You really ought to watch your language Fudgie, it isn't big and it isn't clever. I don't know what the score is here, one mention of a certain city in the north west of England sends everyone into a frenzy, God knows what the reaction would have been if I had mentioned Liverpool, apart from 'Help.'

How ye doing Mick, its the one half of the Mods fae Anderston here, the good looking wan, give Wass my regards.

lgp125 How you doing. Heard you've got hunners of weans now. Still fancy another scooter? Good fun, I've had a few over the years. Wass still has some, I will tell him you were asking for him - he's still a Mod. Heard wee rumours about McQuillan over the years - I worked beside his wee brother Gerry for a while. I heard john was in and out all the time.
I'm sure I passed you about 4 years ago on Paisley Road, you had a black mod suit on - then I thought maybe it wasn't you as yours was always green.
  • whoru · 1 year ago

Charlie, you off to Friday St tonight?
  • Charlie · 1 year ago
    will be there, you going?
  • LC · 1 year ago
Sadly we won't back in Scotland until at least November, therefore Friday St is off the menu for a while, but i'm sure the SF Convention will keep me going in the meantime. Have a great night on the dancefloor :-) , wish we were there with you all :-)

How about a Mod house warming party to meet the new neighbours !!!
  • Charlie · 1 year ago
It was a very good night, Lammy Chick, quiet to begin, good selection of tunes,
and it soon revved up, one the girls from "Eye's Wide Open" even played "Just
Like Me" one of the Paul Revere And The Raiders, one of my old tunes from
The One Up days, magic!! Cheers for that, nice to know the younger crowd
have got into the swing of things in their thirst for all things 60's. Are you going
to the next Friday Street, Lammy Chick? Hope to see you there.

Hey Whoru, Angie says your a lightweight, thats why you fell asleep in the
close, LILI!! Take it easy amigo!!
  • LC · 1 year ago
House warming, I'll bring the Babycham's and the Quadrophenia album LiLi :-)

Glad to hear you had a Fab night at Friday Street Charlie, I always enjoy it when I can make it to Scotland, but the great company is essential for a great night out also, which you kind Glasgow folk always supply :-). You mentioned that they played "Just like Me", mmmmmm hard on to dance to I would say, a lot of clapping is essential I expect? Charlie number 425 above will explain our next venture to Friday Steet, you off to Melting Pot tonight?
  • Charlie · 1 year ago
Unfortunately not, Lammy Chick, its always a good night at the Melting Pot,
as long as they don't let me in, ho ho!! Hope to se you and Steve01 in the coming months, take care Shimmy on!!!
  • LC · 1 year ago
My turn out tonight, but not a Mod night unfortunately, out with the muggles, expect the music to be blinking awful, but I will be able to catch up with my mates, just like we did in the The Scene Club all those years ago :-), minus the great music and the eyecatching interior, complete with red light bulbs. Have a good one whatever you get up to :-)

  • Davie Blair · 1 year ago
    : )
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
There is absolutely no way you went to the big rock for the dinner school Andy. I walked past that dinner school every day and the smell would knock you out. And how you have not learned good English after lessons at the finest school in the world escapes me.

And before I forget again, tell Angie I was asking after her, and that she is still a great dancer.
  • Trina..P · 1 year ago
Whoru - Mik obviously had the same English teacher as you at the big Rock as punctuation isn't his strong point either.

Just been browsing through the Internet on various Northern Soul
merchandise and the same for Psychedelia, what a load of tat!
Checked out 8 different websites, your all con artist, not one
of them has offered V.F.M Even quality, is bog standard.

When did The Real Thing "You To Me Are Everything" become
Northern Soul? Should be sued under the Trades Description
Act for that alone!! Its D.I.S.C.O, sorry thats Ottowan,
or is that Northern Soul too?

No, don't buy it at all , think there is room for plenty of
competition, they are making a killing out of the name.

lgp - I had a turquoise GP in early 1980 - are you sure it wisnae me you were talking to? Funny that, it might have been me - I would probably have been on my way to Bobby Black's or our mutual friend Tams

Andy - John McLaughlin had a red 150 super, I went a couple of runs with him at the time
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Trina, there is no way that Mik can blame any of the teachers at the big rock for bad uncupation or spellin. Mr Macguigan was one of the finest teachers ever to do Shakespeare. If anything it must have been the school lunches that made the kids go mad, the smell was bad enough, how it felt to actually eat the stuff must have been a nightmare.

And thanks for the welcome NG. I definitely think I qualify as a Mod due to the 'clean living under difficult circumstances' banner. This house we have moved into must be the mankiest in the whole of Bishie. It'll take about three weeks just to get the place clean. There is a very large back garden needing a trim if you are volunteering.
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Mik, I just had a wee look at the Specials Scooter Club site and found a nice wee photo of Wass, seemingly out for the count at some do. The only weird thing is they had his name as 'Will.' I don't even remember your old boy being called 'Will.'
  • mr..nobody · 1 year ago
Chris, Wass hates the Will patter but it's obviously an English thing although he has got used to it now. Everytime that film Zulu comes on he gets hit with 'fire at will' Before they started calling him Will in the Scooter Club, they used to call him SPG which was the name of the wee aggressive scottish ginger rat which was the pet of one of the characters in the Young Ones.

Sorry Chris never had big Peter McGuigan, I had Miss Paterson which might explain a lot cause she was nuts
  • JimmyTheMod · 1 year ago

Well captured Jimmy, or should that be Will captured Mik.

I could well imagine Wass being slightly unhappy with the Will tag, but I suppose it is better than the wee animal fae the Young One's, or Jock. I remember Miss Paterson although I never got her for English. I got McGuigan, an older guy with a hump whose name escapes me just now (maybe Toal), and a guy called Henderson. One of the best characters was Wilson down at History. Remember he used to nip out to the big Glen for a couple of halfs. I also saw him batter wee Paul Ferris up against the window in the corridor.

  • Fitzy · 1 year ago
i remember my first night in the scene club i was about 15yr old, loads of guys on the dance floor outdancing the girls and not many girls at that, but wat got me was the sheer numbers of people cramed into it and the side rooms full of couples doing what couples do, the toilels were full with mods drinking and shareing pills of which a guy opend his hand to reveal a veriety of pills and told me to help myself, not wanting to be rude i took a couple, the next thing i know im rideing on the back of a scoot round george square, good memories ithink ?.
  • NGMods · 1 year ago
Chris a few more sounds added to help you rekindle those old Scene Club memories.
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Cheers NG. Nice choice of tracks once again, although if I was to be a bit picky I would have to say that I don't recall either the Little Anthony track or 'Nobody but Me' being played there. Those were sounds probably more associated with the Star Club than the Scene. It wasn't really until near the end of the Scene Club that northern became a feature, and even then it was a small feature.
  • stevie fae cranhill · 1 year ago
i'm sure they played the Ghostbusters theme - are you going to stick that on there NG?
  • stevie fae cranhill · 1 year ago
quick, get the bunting and dancing girls out - Chris is about to reach 1,000 not out - King of Comments indeed - perhaps you might let the wife and kids have a go on that pc also...
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
You may have noticed Stevie that I have not been on at all during the past few nights. This was down to my good wife hogging the laptop for some work carry on, well that's what she said anyway. And I was sent next door to carry on with the painting. I think Leonardo Di Caprio did the Sistine Chapel quicker than its taking us to do this place
  • NGMods · 1 year ago
Ghostbusters theme, whats that ? is it Michael Jackson under another name ? I'll have a look and see if I have it .........
  • NGMods · 1 year ago
Chris I shall have a few more tunes added in due course, it ain't took me too long to get these ones posted.

Did you see Stevies video message that he posted yesterday ? he may do one for your 1000th post, the Mod on the scooter looked really cool !!!
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
No I did not see the Video that Stevie did NG. I was probably at work at the time and was unable to watch it. But I will try and trace it back for a look.

Some other Scene Club classics I could suggest were 'Yeah Yeah' by Georgie Fame, '1.2.3' by Len Barry, 'Heatwave' by Martha and the Vandella's, 'Needle in a Haystack by The Velvelletes, I'm a Man' by Spence Davis, 'Bread and Butter' by The Newbeats, and anything by Jerry Lee Lewis Li Li!

Who are the Mods in the current front page NG ? Are they from your time in the mid to late 80s ?
  • NGMods · 1 year ago
Yes they are, picture I would guess was sometime in 86.

As for your other tunes, I saw them all earlier apart from The Newbeats, so we'll get them posted in due course along with "Venus" thank god I spelt that right haha
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
It is just as well you did. It would have been 'Shocking' if you had messed that up. I know even by my poor standards that is an all time low, but hey, its getting late. Did I previously mention 'Roadrunner' by Bo Diddley, and 'Kansas City' Wilbert Harrison. What a terrible forename to give anyone that is, nearly as bad as Walter or Wilfred.
  • James T · 1 year ago
N.G your flirtations with body parts and the people on the site is noted.
  • Charlie · 1 year ago
Here don't forget "Mad World" by Tears For Fears a.k.a Graduates of "Elvis Should Play Ska!" fame and "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" by Culture Club with your "Ghostbusters" theme for the Scene Club Jukebox, great Mod classics eh? LI,LI!! Arthur Conleys "Sweet Soul Music" and Sam and Daves "I Thank You" were a few soul classics we danced to.
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
I think you are going just a wee bit too far with the 'Do You Really Want to Hurt Me' stuff Charlie. If it was 'Time' it would be a different matter but certainly not that other one.

Could not disagree with the Arthur Conley classic. It always packed the dance floor and rightly so. On a slightly more druggy note I always really liked 'I had too Much to Dream Last Night.' by The Seekers Li Li !
  • NGMods · 1 year ago
I've got that 45 Chris, you want it added ?
  • Charlie · 1 year ago
Another Scene Club floor filler "The Way You Do The Things You Do" by The Temptations, have a lot of good memories attatched to this particular song. My dancing partner Issy Clark, hpe out there Issy you are safe and life has been good to you!!

That's not the same Izzy that went about with big Angie and Collette from Garthamlock is it Charlie ?

  • NGMods · 1 year ago
A few tunes added to your article Chris, I hope they get your seal of approval !!
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Cheers NG. Everything that you have added gets the thumbs up from me; even the one's like 'Nobody but me' by the Heinz Beans that was not played in the Scene Club. I will even go as far as to say thanks for putting on lulu's shocking attempt at 'Shout' as I am more than aware that you go to an awful lot of effort to put them on. So thank you very much. And if Angie Sneddon is looking in I am once again only kidding about Lulu's duff effort Li Li !

That would be great NG, as it was undoubtedly one of the Scene Club classics despite its Mod credentials being more than questionable. Okay it is not questionable at all, it is an out and out piece of 60s acid psychedelia smith.
  • NGMods · 1 year ago
Hows that for service Chris ? I hope it's the right track ? enjoy
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Thats the very chappie NG. Someone used to have an Electric Prunes LP, and it had a lot of other great tracks on it apart from 'I had too Much to Dream Last Night.' I still have it on a CD, and obviously on my ipod.

Cheers mate for adding that excellent song that evokes such fantastic memories of our tea total Scene Club days.

I've got an LP but haven't listened to it in a long time, not even sure where it is. All the less, its a great track when it warms up.
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
There was another track on the LP which I think was called 'Lovin.' It was one of the other stand out tracks as far as I remember; very good.

That sort of music is usually not really my cup of tea, but there are a few brilliant tracks from that late 60s acid period.

Another Scene Club tune "Around and Around" by The Rolling Stones oh aye "Paint It Black" also, some of my best party memories was while The Rolling Stones were being played, strange as I am not overtly keen on them.
  • LC · 1 year ago
I do recall "paint it black", but I don't recall "Around and Around" I must admit, sounds a bit rockin roll to me, so maybe that was my que to powder my nose each week LiLi
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Definitely recall 'Paint it Black' being a big favourite. But I also must have been powdering my nose (no drugs talk here Lammy) when 'Around and Around' came on. There was also a great Stones song that was played regularly that I never found out the name of. It had a great intro that Beck totally ripped off for 'Devils Haircut' so if anyone can enlighten me to its name I would be forever grateful.

Whats with all the wee boxes that have now appeared throughout the text Jimmy. Is this a new way of writing that I am not aware of that has replaced comma's and e's ?
  • James T · 1 year ago
chris the coding was changed to support foreign characters and the ' and e's will have to be rewritten... small price for global fame..
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
So unlike Pulp we are not sorted for E's and Whizz Jimmy. I can say with definite certainty that the lack of e's will not burst my bubble mate. Worse things happen at c.

Added a few more sounds for you Chris, I do hope they meet your requirements for this top post.
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
They meet with both my requirements and my approval Mr G, so thanks very much for that. As always, the music on the site, and for this post is top rate. But what would we expect, after all We are the Mods.

No slacking here Mr C I only got the records this morning and here they are, even a Ska/Reggae tune !

Staying in is the new going out, a few beers, great tunes and its a paaaarty
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
Yip, I have to applaud you for the good choice of music NG Mods Rule Okay.

I'm also very much relieved to hear that staying in is the new going out. I am personally out all of the time now.

I was just out doing the rounds of some second hand shops (with some success) and came across a record that was amazingly played at the Scene Club. Does anyone remember Pat Boone's 'Speedy Gonzales' being played. It was certainly not in the same league as 'Mickey's Monkey' or 'First I Look at the Purse' but it was unusual.

I've blown you out the water Chris just had NG given my turntable a service, boy this thing has a new lease of life. Three biscuits and a cup for his fee haha
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
If he keeps this up Charlie it may lead to him being able to pay for all these expensive records that he has. The fee for fixing my turntable was two cups of tea and two biscuits (chocolate) so I am not sure who got the best deal Li Li ! I may even but him a beer as a thank you, if he comes into the TW on saturday night.
  • NGMods · 1 year ago
Its close but I think Charlie just shades it due to the fact the tea was still warm by the time it reached me haha but in your defence, you did however have my two favourite biscuits Breakaway and Orange Club.
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
I personally think that you and the Shugster should have given me a round of applause for getting the two cups of tea up all those stairs without spilling a drop. I also have to say that I am partial to a wee Orange Club (and no, I won't make any football jokes) and a Breakaway, which is also a great Northern Soul song by The Valentines which has 'Keep the Faith'in it. How was that for some useless information.

naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa na na na naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. that is all I remember, LiLi, but still got the memories.
  • Chris C · 1 year ago
The very same one Lammy, from way back in 1962. I will have to listen to it again but I am sure there is a bit in it telling Rosina they are selling greenshield stamps somewhere, followed by the na's Li Li !
  • whoru · 11 months ago
yes chris they did play it .
  • Chris C · 11 months ago
I don't know why I remembered that after all those year Andy. It was one of the one's (another being 'Shakin All Over) that was not really in place in a Mod club, but was defintely played by wee Colin. I think he liked to play unusual records sometimes, even if they were never going to become Mod classics. At least he never played Brian Poodle and the Tremblers Li Li !
